OMG this Graham Norton / Madonna thing is embarrassing. Anyone else feeling like it's just uncomfortable and almost scripted.

Is she very narcissistic? I haven’t followed closely, just odd news articles. I’ve moved from admiring her ability to reinvent herself and her sound, to finding it creepy.

Incredibly.
She's always been rude too.

VioletSpeedwell · 27/06/2026 17:13

I have never understood quite how she got so famous

She's released some fabulous songs.
Like a Prayer, Live to Tell, Papa Don't Preach, Frozen ... I could go on and on ...

She was genuinely beautiful until she started messing with her face.

I never liked her live performances - cringingly over-sexualised - but I can understand how she got so famous.

SwedishEdith · 27/06/2026 17:16

I didn't know she had sisters. It's funny looking them up because they clearly look like her but look like they have aged completely naturally. They look great. They look happy about who they are.

ItsmeMargo · 27/06/2026 17:27

Madonna is one of those people that makes me wince when she’s being interviewed. There’s no warmth, there’s no charisma – which is amazing considering her career and what she’s achieved – and I always wish for it to be over!

I remember when she was on Will & Grace: I think Sean Hayes mentioned that she wasn’t easy to work with. Later he said to her something along the lines of: ‘are there seasons on your planet?’

It’s like she doesn’t want to/know how to interact with people.

Huckleberries · 27/06/2026 17:30

She seems to find interview so painful I don't really understand why she does them

Speaking of pain, this thing about having no cartilage in her knees, but she's probably in permanent pain but I kind of wish she'd stop wearing the high heels, which she clearly can't get around in

I feel like she'll put herself in a lot of pain for the next tour

I suppose if it's your calling, it's your calling

Prince was permanently in a lot of pain wasn't he

cheezncrackers · 27/06/2026 19:09

Prince was permanently in a lot of pain wasn't he

He was. He was also addicted to fentanyl, which he eventually overdosed.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 27/06/2026 21:13

Ugh. It was excruciating and I cringed watching Graham desperately trying not to say the wrong thing/look at her in the wrong way/crack the wrong joke. 😳
She was as mortifyingly humourless as ever and.. I don't think she is physically able to smile anymore, should she ever want to that is.

DEBBIERA123 · 28/06/2026 10:07

If it wasn't for Kylie it would have been awful. Homourless, no ability to engage and with no discernible personality Madonna was just boring. Graham, as much as I like him has the tendency to pander to egos and he did that with aplomb in this interview. It really wasn't worth investing 45 minutes of my life in.

VioletSpeedwell · 28/06/2026 10:55

It's behind a paywall so can't read the whole review but according to The Telegraph

Madonna shows flashes of fun and wit in this slick Graham Norton interview.

Norton seemed forced to stay on the topic of Madonna's new album, but managed to make this one-on-one a relaxed, chatty hour.

The writer has a weird take on wit, fun and relaxed!

Lizzbear · 28/06/2026 11:56

She was almost slurring. Did anyone else feel like she might have taken something to calm herself down? A bit like Matthew Perry in his last interview with the Friends cast?
She has changed her face into a generic, older, rich American woman’s face. No hint of who she was before.
I still admire her stagecraft though.

JenniferBooth · 28/06/2026 16:55

Vogue has a photo shoot with Jerry Hall who is two years older than Madonna Jerry doesnt like the idea of Botox or fillers and says there is nothing wrong with looking 70 although you can look a good 70

Lack of sychophancy has made GN an excellent interviewer. Acting like A list stars have just dropped by to have a chat on his sofa.

His interview with Madonna looks like he was summoned by her for a very staged, prescripted chat. He should have said no, he was busy washing his hair.

Watching her prance around Times Square barely dressed was sad. I'm almost her age before anyone accuses me of ageism. Her filled lips and bloated face were grotesque and affected her speech.

Madonna has never been a feminist. Everything she does has been about pleasing men and sadly young female performers have copied her.

I agree. Her ‘shocking’ outfits and behaviour was always just attention-seeking rather than trying to break down barriers for women. I’ve never liked her. I recognise that she’s written some good songs and was a talented dancer, but she isn’t a great singer at all- extremely average voice IMO. And as a person there is no warmth or humour there at all.

In contrast, The Times review though GN was star struck and intimidated by her.

Bloody hell it's like you read my mind.

HoraceCope · 28/06/2026 17:36

i dont reckon much to her voice on listening again

Lemonmeringue76 · 28/06/2026 18:12

I wonder if she is ND- seriousness, intense focus, difficulties making deep personal connections.

Indigovelvet · 28/06/2026 19:57

No warmth humour or genuineness. Yes. Maybe she got away with it in her youth but now it just looks weird and hostile. Like treading on eggshells around her.

PineappleSunrise · 28/06/2026 20:15

I have to laugh at the comments about Madonna’s career being about pleasing men. Terrifying them, shagging them, dominating them, and telling them exactly what she expected of them, maybe. She spent a lot of her career being the “wrong kind of sexy” for most men. The right kind isn’t just hot, it’s also super nice and giggly and sweet - Kylie, or pre-breakdown Britney, but not Madonna.

I don’t think Madonna’s ever set out to be liked. She wanted to be admired, and her complete lack of interest in being a nice girl was pretty refreshing in pop 30-40 years ago. No-one’s that surprised by complicated pop divas now, though. Her humourlessness is definitely more of a problem these days, and it makes me sad because she really did break the path that a lot of female celebrities have followed since.

fluffythecat1 · 28/06/2026 20:51

In comparison, Rhianna, also a superstar, but hugely generous: https://youtube.com/shorts/rC80EbUTQ_8?is=qLcS03SV5TAzBKNA

toucancancan · 28/06/2026 22:16

Strange interview, she seemed incapable of replying with more than a handful of words, and complained several times that GN was being nosey.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/06/2026 22:18

GN says that Madonna is incredibly rude and difficult

Beachtastic · 28/06/2026 22:33

I'm just watching it now. She's like a terrifying Miss Havisham, poor Graham is cacking his pants despite being a consummate pro. You get the feeling anyone else, she'd chew them up and spit them out.

I do like the Chicago/Detroit techno vibe of her new stuff, but can't bear to see the gyrating gimps in the videos.

Interesting to hear how spontaneous she is when creating. Her tense lack of humour seems at odds with her freedom of creative expression. It's like she enters a sort of trance state to escape her default mode of frozen self-consciousness???

What, he's said that before the interview?

RhannionKPSS · 28/06/2026 22:52

she has never had a sense of humour or any warmth about her , not a fan, far prefer the incredible Kate Bush

I think she has always been very good at what she does but I thought twenty years ago that due to her strong personality, intelligence and views that she would evolve into a talented politician or brilliant film producer or director or something....but no....she has stayed doing the same thing. That has now led me to believe that she is a bit of a one trick pony and just a bit of an oddity rather than the brilliant person I once thought she was. I'm a bit disappointed really. I used to think her rudeness and unpleasantness was a sort of persona she'd invented but now I think it's what she really is and I do find her boring ...apart from when she performs. She'd probably say that's what she does and who she is and she never promised to be anything else amd if I dont like it I can stick it....fair enough.

You thought she would end up as a politician? Eh?

She’s one of the greatest pop stars of all time, and you’re acting as if she’s failed at life. Yes she looks crazy, is probably a loon and she’s shit in interviews, but she’s an icon and always will be. No artist is always relevant at all times.
