Interior design masters new series - let the battle commence

The next series starts on the 21st April. Looking forward to banquettes, and bizarre paint choices, and upcycling of old junk. DD and I are rewatching the old series and I’d forgotten how crazy some of the rooms were!

Ajeet’s was a terrible design with awful materials that was just lucky enough to meet the ‘scruffy youth club’ brief that they weren’t told beforehand and Michelle only bought in to when Kelly advised her. That awful orange ceiling was hideous and MO pulled a proper face when she first walked in.

Poor Johnny - waving him off with “you’re a brilliant designer…” well isn’t that the point of the programme? All the ones who had any genuine potential have now gone.

Pfft. 🙄 What a crap year. I wish they’d ditch Michelle for someone with a bit more integrity.

Just watched it. Ajeet's room was meh. I think Michelle has him as the winner as he is classic Next to me.

Papier mache woman did good this week.

But another week passes and I'm still so uninspired by them all.

WonderfulSmith · 12/05/2026 22:05

Well I thought Lia’s was the least worst space and the rest of them were dreadful. They all looked like a late 90s youth club.

Chrysanthemum5 · 13/05/2026 08:53

This year does feel like the standard of the rooms is pretty low. For example, I genuinely don’t understand how people who want to be interior designers can think using grout pens is a good idea. It always looks cheap. Same with the tile paint that Ajeet used that will chip off easily. And the endless use of OSB.

michelle also seemed very influenced late stage by Kelly. There was nothing in the brief about safety rules but they gave Duran a hard time for her games table because Kelly said it wouldn’t pass safety.

So far no-one is standing out to me whereas in previous years there would have been obvious strong contenders

If anyone wants an injection of Joy, follow one of the previous years contestants on Instagram - Jack kinsey it’s lovely 🥰

Chrysanthemum5 · 13/05/2026 09:07

Thanks @Netaporterill need to look at that

Really poor contestants this year.

He has some great ideas. So many ad posts, which does put me off, but he is still creative so that keeps me following. Him and Banjo demonstrate just how bad this year's contestants are.

Villanousvillans · 13/05/2026 10:03

Sophie’s pub was awful in so many ways. She should have gone.

LadyDanburysHat · 13/05/2026 10:06

I thought most of the rooms were awful last night. Lia's floral wallpaper was a bit mad, but her room was the best of a bad bunch.

I agree with whoever upthread said OSB needs to be banned. I don't understand Michelle saying she liked it. I always think it makes things look unfinished.

MrsBird03 · 13/05/2026 10:49

The OSB is driving me insane! I used to work in a role that required taking paperwork and deliveries over to the warehouse, the guys had used a spare bit of OSB across two filing cabinets to eat off / keep their drinks on. It was always stained with ring marks, someone had spilt some flavour of cup a soup on it which has absorbed, it couldn't be cleaned and stank! I think someone had tried to clean part of it with a micro fibre cloth and it just clung and created little lime green hairs so it looked mouldy! Oh the trauma!

I just can’t see what Ajeet has spent his budget on

I do wonder if some of the contestants are pocketing some of the cash and falsifying invoices.

Yup, pretty awful rooms last night. Jonny's looked nice, but agree it was impractical. I though Ajeet's and Lia's kitchen bit was better though and a good design, but why the floral and OSB.

I just don't get Duran and her ideas. I think she should have gone. The glass was really impractical.

I think the trouble with this programme is it is judged on function and ideas rather than how good it looks in general. There needs to be a bit of balance, but I suppose bias then creeps in. Maybe they need a panel, rather than just michelle. You can tell she is getting sick of theming and the whole "This room is for Tracey, she is a successful woman in her 50s who likes sailing and travelling" crap.

jay55 · 12/05/2026 20:28

It’s like they’ve all gone backwards after last weeks reasonable job.

I’ve just watched it and this is exactly what I was thinking. All the rooms were quite amateurish I thought, especially in comparison to last week. Except maybe Jonni’s which was clearly the best design (to look at and more homely too), but obviously the best ones go home 🤔

I do think Ajeet is talented though - but agree this week’s wasn’t great.

Really poor contestants this year.

I agree! I think almost anyone with access to a paint chart and an account at B&Q could have done a better job for most of the spaces that the 'designers' been given this series.

Plus the budgets are way too low for the designs and/or effects that they are trying to achieve.

The ones sent home up to this point have been the best of an uninspiring bunch.

Surely the production team should at least give the contestants a 'health & safety' sheet that details things like 'no alcohol allowed on the base' for e.g. Although the pub design was crap - alcohol or no alcohol! Sophie should have gone home before Jonni.

Michelle needs to give her head a wobble.

alwaysusethebiglight · 13/05/2026 17:46

Just watching last nights and had to jump on here to check I hadn’t missed something. They are all pretty rubbish. I thought the budget/time was really low but £2000 and 2 days! They all look like they need redoing now.

Twonewcats · 13/05/2026 21:10

I've just watched this week's. Apart from Loa's, they all looked really cold and unwelcoming. Couldn't any of them have put up some plush curtains or something, just to make it a bit comfier, instead of them looking so stark and bare.

Victoriawould24 · 13/05/2026 22:39

Those bean bags , I mean they were just basic tiny bean bags.
It reminded me of last week’s the two that left and those fold out cushion chairs beds.
Good lord above, as if any adult could sit comfortably on them never mind sleep, and in cream !

I thought the judging duo of Michelle and Kelly was very awkward this week, neither of them are natural personalities are they.

I think Johnny went because of the silly dinner table table tennis nonsense that took up half the room.
I don’t think he’s a brilliant designer by any stretch his cliche and not fit for purpose Alice in Wonderland cringe fest put me right off him.

I am guessing Emmerlie and Ajmer in the final and agree he has been earmarked to win.

….an out of tune piano .. just what every fake pub needs

I was gobsmacked that she paid for it. You would normally pay to have that type of piano removed - they are valueless as well as having a cost to maintain.

I thought Sophie would go - she completely missed the fact that these rooms are the staff homes when off duty. Who wants to sit on a stool in their living room to watch TV or for their kitchen diner to feel like a pub? Johnny made the same mistake - seemed to forget this was a communal home, not a fancy apartment with titchy bean bags.

I don’t like Lia’s flowery wallpaper but hers felt the most homely and least institutional so I’m not surprised she won.

Giggorata · 14/05/2026 15:10

Very disappointing this year.

daysofpearlyspencer · 14/05/2026 17:10

If I was a user of those spaces I would be bloody furious at loosing those big comfy sofas. Who wants to lounge about on a stool FFS

I agree! I always think this on interior design masters, every space always has a lot of uncomfortable seating.

Surely they have to return the spaces to a useable state after?

Victoriawould24 · 14/05/2026 22:18

on the seating theme when, when Kelly pulled out that under the table bench (possibly in Lia’s) and it was really high with a tiny little back rest and Michelle declared ‘there’s not a bad seat in the house’ 🥴.
Ok queen you enjoy a film sitting on that.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 17/05/2026 07:36

The brief was basically practical and homely. Not that difficult to do.

What is the point of OSB, it looks like something you would use to floor the attic not make a kitchen with.

None of the designers so far deserve to win.

MrsBird03 · 17/05/2026 14:01

Do they return rooms to how they were? It seems like a lot of waste, ive just had a look at peckforton *sp) castle's webpage and don't recognise any of the rooms that were done up!

Victoriawould24 · 17/05/2026 21:50

I wonder if maybe the places like the castle and Navy base were going to decorate and upgrade anyway so they are happy to let the contestants mess around in the knowledge it’s not being kept. Although some things must be a huge pain in the arse to put right.
