I didn't enjoy series 10 and 11 as the social distancing looked ridiculous and i struggled when they wore face coverings. It was just a further reminder of covid.

Face masks were worn in the late 1918s to 1950. Quarantine was strict.

Vaccination gave the population so much freedom.

NewAgeNewMe · 16/02/2026 13:28

Thank you for the thread. I predict SMJ will die in the final episode. 😢 I doubt I’m the only one thinking that.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/02/2026 13:55

@NewAgeNewMe I think the same. Considering they are high church Anglican nuns. The local church never gets a mention these days. It used to be mentioned in the earlier series. Cyril would never have taken the place of a c of e vicar.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 16/02/2026 14:12

I've watched it since the beginning and the ever-changing cast means I can never remember the names of the various nuns and midwives. A revolving door of nuns, you might say.

NewAgeNewMe · 16/02/2026 14:22

I’ve forgotten his name but there was a vicar who was engaged to Trixie and who then married Barbara I think? Agree Cyril wouldn’t have taken a CofE vicars place.

Yes, Tom

Yes. And he and Trixie had a long relationship and a child in real life.
They've split up now.

Trixie (Helen George) had a caesarean section. She said she couldn't bear the idea of giving birth normally.
Silly woman.

I like seeing the clothes etc in this series. It’s just within my memory and reminds me of what my aunts and DM wore. My brother had the same pyjamas as the little boy at the wrestling and I had that Brownie uniform. It hadn’t long changed IIRC.

Me too! I was a Brownie in the 1980s and wore that uniform. My mum dressed like Shealagh!

Toddlerteaplease · 16/02/2026 14:51

I also had that brownie uniform, but with an itchy bobble had rather than a beret, I felt ancient when I saw one in a museum last week. 🤣

NewAgeNewMe · 16/02/2026 15:09

Another who had that brownie uniform old

StopWindingBobStopWinding · 16/02/2026 15:44

Me too, for the brownie uniform with a bobble hat! We’re up to the year I was born now so I’ve been chatting with mum about how accurate it is. She was only in her early 20s and so remembers it all very well, including the fashions, much in evidence in my baby photos!

BestIsWest · 16/02/2026 15:45

We still had berets when I was at Brownies. I remember freezing in the uniform as it was really thin cotton. Knee high socks and no tights allowed in my pack. I was thinking about this the other day. We had to wear knee high socks all the way through sixth form until I was 18 in 1981. Ridiculous!

Toddlerteaplease · 16/02/2026 16:22

I’m always surprised when I see teenagers in school uniform wearing knee socks. They were fashion suicide when I was at school! Ankle socks or tights only.

Silly woman.

They had 2 daughters and she had a medical complication, then was rumoured to date Olly Rix(Matthew Aylward) for a while.

Nosejobnelly · 16/02/2026 22:20

I had that brownie uniform too with the bobble hat! Later 70s!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 16/02/2026 22:25

I had that Brownie uniform must have been early 80s.

My childhood crockery is in York Castle Museum. They have a mock up street with rooms from each decade. The 70s room is basically furnished by my childhood home.

I went to a toy museum and they had all my childhood toys in there 🤣

@NoCommentingFromNowOn watch up until Jenny leaves and Chummies mum dies then skip the rest until this series. You won’t have missed anything except the nauseating episodes.

Oh I love that museum. Do you have a photo? I'll look for it.

SonsRfab · 17/02/2026 13:21

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I see you said the whole room. Fab I'll look next time I go.

I don’t know, I rewatched a few years ago and thought the abortion debate and legalisation was well done. The midwife with the grandmother. Trixie going on the radio to campaign. Was quite hard hitting.

I think that it is good until series 9. I always skip series 10 to 13 as i wasn't keen. I didn't mind series 14 though. I do skip the Christmas specials apart from the first one which features mrs Jenkins.

It’s gotten slowly worse - silly storylines and Dr Turner is now the main character. I think it was around series 7 or 8 where I started to enjoy it less, but series 10 is when it took a turn for the worse imho.

Saying that I still watch all the episodes so I suppose it can’t be that bad although I also watch and complain about every series of silent witness too

Like you I suffer to some degree from sunk costs fallacy with some of these long running piles of nonsense.

I still watch CTM but not regularly and don’t bother if I miss an episode where the early series I watched eagerly. Violent Shitness is probably even worse - early series did at least pretend to acknowledge procedure but its long since deviated into fairy tale land and even less subtle Educational Videos.

The trend to overly sanitise history seems to be fairly recent, I notice it most on the Beeb but its not unique to the Beeb dramas. Its not just irritating - its very problematic when it sanitises experiences in fairly recent history to deny and minimise some of the social problems experienced.
