Wish I didn't recently watch the Uncle Saul's Funeral episode of Friday Night Dinner as I couldn't help thinking of them dropping Saul's coffin when they were carrying Sr MJ up those steep stairs. 😁

StrawberryFlowers · 08/03/2026 22:31

I didn't see Valerie in the photos (or Chummy as the previous poster said)

StrawberryFlowers · 08/03/2026 22:35

Before I watched CTM I watched the film The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. I don't know if anyone has seen it. It was on TV recently and although it was good it was so upsetting. I cried my eyes out and I never cry!
So I watched CTM feeling quite emotional. I loved how they did the death scene. Who wouldn't want to go like that? Lovely to see Sr Evangelina.

I was a midwife,I trained in Aldershot in the Army, ultrasound was normal then 1974.No idea about civilian hospitals.

I myself never had an ultrasound and had 4 pregnancies,2 in the U.K. and 2 in Italy.I was never offered one,my last pregnancy was here in 1982.

My sister was born in early '72 mum had an ultra sound because of complications and the possibility of twins. The hospital in a town, not city, in the west Midlands so the scan would have been done 71. My aunt was always 'jealous' than mum got to 'see' her baby before it was born but Mum always said it just looked like static on the telly and she couldn't see anything remotely baby like.

AgeingDoc · 08/03/2026 22:42

I have to confess that despite it all being ridiculously twee and entirely predictable I did shed a few tears tonight! Though I was expecting Belinda to call her new baby Monica. I wondered if Victoria was Sr MJ's birth name but I've just looked it up and apparently it was Antonia so no connection there, which is slightly disappointing.
I rolled my (leaky) eyes at Dr T having to talk Timothy through how to pronounce someone dead as he is qualified now isn't he? Surely he would have learned that as a medical student - I certainly did and had to do it on my own several times in my first week at work. I was also surprised that Dr T didn't do it himself. I don't think in real life this would have been seen as a teaching moment for a junior doctor.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is on 4Seven as I type. It started at 10pm. I recorded it when it was on C4 last night.

Thank you for the recommendation, @StrawberryFlowers .

I know there were pictures of everybody there but Barbara was especially lovely to see.

Barbara was my favourite, along with Val.

I miss them both

Valerie was in the photos, I was looking out for her and Barbara, as they were my favourites.

Lucille and Chummy weren’t though.

Thanks. I must have missed it

LIZS · 08/03/2026 22:59

No pics of Lucille or Nancy and Matthew was flying back but didn’t attend SMJ service.

StrawberryFlowers · 08/03/2026 23:04

I was looking to see if they'd show this photo. I remember really liking it when I saw it on the front of the Radio Times as they looked so glamorous

call the midwife part 2
Bunionbabe · 08/03/2026 23:20

If Beryl really wanted to be a 'mum' she could possibly foster or adopt, maybe with Geoff? Prob wasn't worth leaving the order in the first place.

I seem to remember them saying once that SMJ had delivered Tim (could be faulty memory though!) in which case it would have been a nice gesture.

NewAgeNewMe · 08/03/2026 23:38

Didn’t get the beryl storyline.

SMJ death was perfection. The nuns coming to get her 😢

I had hoped some old faces, Jenny, Chummy, Sister Mary Cynthia would be in the last episode but great episode nonetheless.

KenAdams · 08/03/2026 23:58

I didn't know that was the last episode. I'm absolutely gutted, I wasn't prepared.

IdentityCris · 09/03/2026 00:11

I'm wondering if we'll get a Higgs and Crane Detective Agency spin-off.

Wildhampster · 08/03/2026 21:10

I loved it. Despite being gay I think Geoffrey is actually very very fond of Beryl. I wondered if Beryl was going to recognise Dr Parry at the gay bar place although she might not ever have shared a scene with him at the hospital. I liked Reggie being included as a proper man to carry the coffin. Most of all I loved the Sister Evangelina scene. So pleased they persuaded Pam Ferris back for that.

I read that whole thing as Beryl recognising Dr Parry, but him not recognising her as “Beryl,” (and her not wanting him to!) but I could very much be wrong!

I thought the Order was RC? I believe in reality the Order was stopped doing midwifery because "Virgin Brides" were not supposed to have anything to do with anything sexual. IIRC I read that in one of the original books. The books are much more honest and explicit but a good read.

I read the books and understood that the order moved on because the were no longer needed for midwifery due to a lower birth rate after the pill and the expansion of the NHS.

I'd like that. A bit Miss Marple.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 09/03/2026 04:58

i thought they would have Susan on the floor, without the use of her false arms and legs, crawling.

that indeed was emotional, although it was odd how she was on her own when she died it was lovely to see Sister Evangeline

in our family recently we had a death followed the next day by a birth, so that was emotional

and Mrs Mullocks checking the baby's toes and fingers and cutting the cord.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/03/2026 06:25

@StopWindingBobStopWindingi thought the same about her delivering Tim. I was surprised it wasn’t mentioned. Unless we are both wrong and it was Sr Evangelina?

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/03/2026 07:27

i thought they would have Susan on the floor, without the use of her false arms and legs, crawling. I don't know much about film making but I think that would be hard to do, harder than having her sitting in a chair and doing whatever trickery they've been doing. I would assume (imagine) they've been letting her crawl off screen at home and putting the legs on to go out.

My mother refused an ultrasound in 1978 (Norfolk). I used to work with someone whose husband was involved in the development of ultrasounds and had images from all four of her pregnancies. The first (late 60s I think) was really green and blurry, and the last from the late 70s wasn't as clear as Rosalind's.

I cried when Sister Evangelina appeared - it felt so right. I did laugh at the stunt nuns returning as ghosts.

I was very confused over the time of year - it was snowing at the funeral, was it supposed to be February/March? I'd thought it looked later than that.

I quite liked Trixie refusing to turn round and insisting on 55% of the hospital. I wasn't keen on her character particularly (although better than Jenny in the early years) and agree she felt recently as if she was in a different show.
