The O'Hara children have Irish accents in the books, when Archie meets Caitlin on the train it describes how he recognises her Irish accent.

I think Maud and Declan are so incompetent when it comes to running a household that all the money worries land on Taggie - bills, buying uniforms etc.

Apologies you’re right though Caitlin’s is described as a shrill Irish accent. Think I’d rather have SW London.

Doesn’t book Taggie have a cloud of black hair?

the images are pretty but very bland.

I think she's also compared to a greyhound, is very tall, slender with a cloud of black hair, nothing at all like the series Taggie.

Does anyone remember the name of a book I think she wrote (but could be someone else to be fair) it was a slim book so not riders/polo etc…
Dowdy girl goes with a good looking man who’s an arse, another man and a glamorous woman who’s a model to the south of France something sul mere maybe.
Her man and the model end up getting together, she’s stuck in France feeling frumpy and depressed. Had a make over and ends up being beautiful. There is a mistral one day, the model had a mascara stained towel and is not very nice.
Does it ring any bells with anyone? I read it in my teens and loved it.
I also remember one about a group of people on a barge I don’t think it was the same book but I loved that one too. I would love to re read them.

Imogen! The magic a good haircut and a tan can do to a chubby shy Yorkshire lass!

She had the apologetic clumsiness of a wolfhound that can’t help knocking over teacups with it’s tail.

or something.

I MUST go and read something else to this level of fondness.

Not to mention a wardrobe in pale greens and blues guaranteed to take the last tinge of redness out of a sun tan.

Poor old purple sprouting brocklehurst. Cable was such a bitch!

Season 3 has apparently been agreed.

Wonder how what books they’ll incorporate into it.

Brilliant news, 12 more episodes!

I wonder will they split it like season 2, that wasn't a popular decision (although I don't mind the wait til November)

Looking forward to hearing the casting news for Ricky, Chessie, Daisy, Drew and Red 😀

And Luke!!

I wasn’t in the least bit bothered how they cast Rupert - will be very bothered by Luke’s!

(if they follow Polo’s whole plot line that is, they might move on to TMWMHJ)

MagAmberson · 16/06/2026 17:27

Oh Luke too! I wonder how many of the cast will be back, a lot of the characters don't reappear in Polo though the writers have shown they're willing to stray from the page and existing characters

Guessing they'll segue into Polo if they're introducing Perdita and the Carlisle twins. I have a soft spot for Daisy although she is a bit wet, and poor Bibi with her big nose.

Also, Sharon Kaputnik!

ChessieFL · 17/06/2026 11:42

I think they’ll just continue with the existing cast, either making up completely new stories (which they have started doing already) or perhaps taking stories from the other books but applying them to the Rivals characters rather than introducing loads of new characters.

They won’t want to lose the excellent cast they’ve got and also won’t want to risk alienating people who haven’t read the books and who will just want to continue with the existing characters.

I think they might introduce a few more new characters (we know for example they’re introducing David Hawkley so maybe we’ll get Lysander as well, and obviously we already have Perdita and the Carlisle twins) but I don’t think they will introduce all the Polo characters because it would just get unmanageable unless they also get rid of lots of the Rivals cast which wouldn’t be popular.

I’m on the fence with this because on the one hand I love the Rivals cast and want to see more of them, but I would equally love to see properly done adaptations of Polo, TMWMHJ etc. In my ideal world they would continue Rivals with made up stories while separately doing Polo etc but I know that won’t happen (especially once they brought Perdita into Rivals).

GertrudeOHara · 17/06/2026 11:59

We MUST have Rannaldini. And if they can get Hermione Harefield right, I’ll die happy. And Georgie for her affair with David.

bookworm14 · 17/06/2026 12:26

I do hope they get to Appassionata which is my joint favourite with Rivals. The reconciliation between Rupert and Marcus is so beautifully done (and the piano competition is just brilliant).

CaragianettE · 17/06/2026 15:24

Honestly as much as I think the current cast is great, I wonder if it might be time to filter some old characters out and some new ones in. A lot of this season felt to me like more of the same in terms of character dynamics, for example yes Lizzie and Fred Fred are sweet but we’d already seen them circle around and yearn for each other in season 1. They either need to do more to develop the current characters plot and psychology wise, or introduce some new ones.

I think the south of France one was Imogen? And the barge one is Octavia, that one is one of my favourite ever Jilly books.

Octavia was very spoiled , lived in a huge flat overlooking Green Park and wore striped pink dungarees with nothing underneath Shock
One of the first JC books I read , after Lisa&co .

I doubt they'll make Polo as per the book, the costs would be enormous and putting on all those polo games would be so difficult, it's one thing to teach an actor to ride a horse but competitive polo is a differnt thing.

TheDonsDingleberries · 19/06/2026 23:51

I know the threads moved on, but I've just seen episode 6 and need to talk about it!

With the number of characters fannying around in the storm, it was obvious that someone was going to get seriously hurt or die. When Monica went out for the second time, I actually thought that Caitlin might die, leaving Monica too wracked with guilt to tell a bereaved Declan or Taggie about Tony & Maude's affair after all. I've not read the books, but I think I would have preferred that angle if they had to bump someone off as it raises so many more questions.

Would Maude think that Monica purposely endangered her daughter to get revenge? Would Monica still leave Tony, or stay to support Archie? Would Declan turn back to the bottle in his grief and how would that effect Venturer? Would Taggie turn to Rupert or Bas for comfort? Would Cameron confront Rupert or Taggie in response to finding the card in Rupert's diary, or would feel forces to bite her tongue & stew on it in the wake of Caitlin's death? What would Tony do?

Some amazing performances throughout.

Also I don't think Monica would have faked her death as suggested up thread. She'd never do that to her children. Or the labradors!

MagAmberson · 20/06/2026 08:58

In the podcast Dominic Treadwell Collins said they went back and forth on who would die, I thought possibly Caitlin or Archie were the alternatives.

I don't think they needed to kill off Monica to set up Tony's descent into more villainous behaviour. If she had ended the marriage and kicked him out it could have had a similar effect though they were obviously looking for an emotional gut punch of her death

One of the podcasts suggested there may be another polo episode coming up in the second half of the series and it is impressive.

I agree it would be much harder to have the whole book - US, Argentina & UK locations, all the matches, the poor treatment of horses - would all be expensive and difficult.

Given the way that the plots have deviated so far, and that we’ve seen characters from other books get introduced, plus that the intro changed from “Based on Rivals” for season 1 to “Based on The Rutshire Chronicles” for season 2 I think it will continue as current main cast as a standalone series and will half use plots from the books and half go its own way. It’s definitely worked for me so far!

SemmaLina · 20/06/2026 11:36

Another one who watched the podcast , I’m sorry to see Monica go , but understand why , because now , there is no one who can hold Tony back , or talk sense into him
Interested to see how it develops , I have now nearly finished The man who made husbands jealous , not sure how that would translate to TV

LaMarschallin · 20/06/2026 11:38

I think "Score!" would make a good, standalone series as it's a whodunnit in its own right.

Notonthestairs · 20/06/2026 12:19

I haven’t watched the podcast - is it the official Rivals one?
