Hullo telly addicts I am very new to the party over here, but has the UK series of Ghosts got any fans ?
I watched the US version (Netflix) and was underwhelmed, tho' enjoyed the premise..then, through the magic of technology, discovered I could watch the Beeb original. I have been laughing out loud ! Love it ! So much funnier.
Been bingeing but aware I am running out of episodes ...and then I will doubtless be "sucked off" as the ghosts say...."moving on! " says Alison 😂
it's refreshing to watch something so well scripted and acted and so much fun (and often quite moving). I think it's going to be my new Schitt's Creek (ie watch on demand). Hope there are fellow Ghosties who agree !

We've just discovered it too! Although haven't seen the US version. It's amazing in that its so silly but has had me in tears (looking at you S2 Christmas special). Robin and Julian are the best.

TheNextStationIs · 11/01/2026 19:09

It's fab.

Treat yourself to a visit to the house itself too!

I love it. Ultimate comfort watch, and I love the Christmas ones too. Never got on board with the US remakes as it seems to be a scene-by-scene and character-for-character version, which of course doesn't translate; Ghosts being a definitively British humour.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 11/01/2026 19:24

Im not keen on the us version. I can't articulate why. Some bits are good, but giving the ghosts "powers" is extending the remit too much. I've only seen one of the Australian series and again, not impressed. The og is just right, the right length, the characters are sketched perfectly and the three Horrible History players are so funny. And Robin...
Apparently the franchise is extending to France and Germany. I can see the French one being the better version.

Aintgointogoa · 11/01/2026 19:25

Oh I am thrilled as I can't really share with anyone here (VPN access only, sssssh.....) Yes it has had me in tears @Weatherwax. I really like Mary too, her backstory gets more complex and she also becomes very self aware.
I adore Kitty ! (The balloon 🤣) It's absolutely British humour at its best. Robin has me in stitches.
@TheNextStationIs OMG !!!

See if you can get hold of the film Bill by the same.gang, based on Shakespeare's life, and Yonderland too. All by and starring rhe "Ghosts"!

LoopyGremlin · 11/01/2026 19:36

I love ghosts! In fact I think I will start rewatching it 😀

Aintgointogoa · 11/01/2026 19:47

@Weatherwax that’s fantastic thanks !!

We binged watched the complete series (again!) over Christmas. Tried the U.S version, but just couldn't get into it, the U.K. cast have worked together for so long they just gel and it makes it so seamless.
Favourite scene: Pat telling a ghost story (?) around the campfire screek screek and then Mary jump scaring Julian and Robin😆😆😆

There are some great Ghosts bloopers on YT.

AncientMarina · 11/01/2026 21:38

I adore Ghosts but only the UK version. So touching, funny and comforting. They are SO clever. You can watch it over and over again and see something different every time.

So many fantastic bits - the childrens' birthday party, the steamed up bathroom mirror and the winking doll, when Bunny and Berkeley come to dinner, Mary and Robin improvising, Pat going to his shed for a Watneys. Genius.

OP, if you like Ghosts you might like Detectorists too. Very gentle, funny, great characters and the British countryside looking utterly wonderful. It's some of the best telly ever made in my opinion.

Always Moonah Ston.

Aintgointogoa · 11/01/2026 22:52

@AncientMarina I am on to it ! Love it ! Very soothing. And you're right about the countryside, I do miss the gentle UK arable landscape in all its seasons. Hope the vpn holds up ha ha.....

The Christmas episode where they put on the pantomime for Alison is probably my favourite episode of any sitcom, ever. It’s just so lovely, and the kind Captain as a perfect Fairy Godfather is just inspired.

We love Ghosts in this house. We quote it all the time. “Dip it again…”

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 11/01/2026 22:56

Ooh can I join? LOVE Ghosts! It's my ultimate comfort watch, I can just sit and watch all the series one after another - I think The Thomas Thorn Affair is the most brilliant piece of TV ever. In my house every time we mention baskets, the obligatory 'potato' mime is performed...

I can't get on with Detectorists, despite everyone telling me how much I ought to love it though. No idea why, love Mckenzie Crook and Toby Jones, so I have no reason to dislike it as much as I do. Maybe I'll give it another go...

But first, back to watching Robin and 'Moonah Stone'.

Mydadsbirthday · 11/01/2026 23:27

Ghosts is absolutely brilliant. Not really interested in seeing the US version.

For some reason I don't really want to rewatch it. I'm not sure why. I hardly rewatch anything, in fact the only thing I've rewatched in recent years is motherland which I rewatch most years and this weekend started watching Derry Girls with my teens, which I first watched during covid.

Detectorists is wonderful and I will rewatch that one day.

You're so right about the Captain being kind. It melts my heart when he tries to make Kitty smile and calls her Katherine. Makes you think of all the gentle men who went to war and how appalling it must have been for them.

Pat's fascination with food is a joy. Gravy in our house is always referred to as 'Pat's favourite sauce."

Can I just mention the episode where Fanny has a crush on Mike. The statue!!

Tallestone · 12/01/2026 09:50

I love it too it's great. I do actually like the American version. Not as much

SilverPink · 12/01/2026 09:59

DD and I love this, but then we love anything from the Horrible Histories team. They’re just brilliantly funny in anything. My favourites are Julian and Thomas, and I love Mike (the way he randomly talks to the ceiling when he’s talking to the ghosts 😆). I haven’t watched any other version. Not a massive fan of American comedy I’ll admit.

AncientMarina · 12/01/2026 10:11

Mike is brilliant. I'm not eating anything's rissole.

Lager top!

mogtheexcellent · 12/01/2026 10:14

The German version is very similar to the UK version. I found the French version a bit cold. No idea what they are saying in the Greek version. Have yet to watch the aussie version which is apparently very good.

Reddit ghostsuk sub has links to the French and German with subtitles.

EnchantedDaylight · 12/01/2026 10:18

We love it (UK version, never tried the US one, but can't imagine it would be as good. There's an excellent podcasst series to go with it too. And the filming tour at West Horsley Place is an excellent day out.

HeadyLamarr · 12/01/2026 10:18

It's just wonderful. Robin is incredible.
"I know that guy!"

Purplebunnie · 12/01/2026 13:01

Love the UK version and I will be looking out for the other versions, thanks for the heads up

I was aware of the US version which I couldn't get into and a really big no no for me is they use a Spanish actor to portray a Native American. There are plenty of Native American actors. Sorry I digress but it's become a thing with me

LIZS · 12/01/2026 13:09

There are various fan facebook groups including for the international versions.

MylipstickiscalledHugMe · 12/01/2026 13:21

We adore it and watch it over and over. The book is brilliant too, full of new material.

My favourite episode is About Last Night, when they're hungover. The slapstick catalogue of disaster at the very end is perfection!
