Just finished it.

Well I feel bad for my Kali distrust!

I was surprised that the “we won” bit came so soon and I kept thinking that it would reveal that it was a dream and the mind flayer had actually won. But it was different & nice to see how they all were after although a bit long, I did cry a fair bit!

Hopper seemed remarkably happy / philosophical after losing El

Yes, I thought El would be alive as he was seemingly fine. I do believe she died.

I agree that the ending was very in keeping with 80s film where the goodies always win and it was about growing up & that transition to adulthood.

I think Hopper was philosophical about El’s death because he’s also chosen to believe she made it out. In the scene with Mike, he’s almost encouraging him to think of the happy ending and ‘take the right road’.

I personally don’t believe she made it out, but Mike and Hopper needed something to hold on to so they could move on.

x12 · 02/01/2026 08:38

That’s true, I didn’t think of that.

Screenager · 02/01/2026 09:37

I agree that there was not as much threat in S5 as the other seasons. I could never tell who was going to die in the other seasons, but for this one I’m disappointed no one did!… I think steve should have fallen from the tower. Although i love steve!… it would have made me think, whoa anything’s possible!

My ds also pointed out that non of them have slept for 8 episodes! 😆

It felt so poignant when they put their D&D books up on the shelf for the last time, affirmed with Mike’s younger sister taking over with the next generation… It was a perfect ending from where it all began. I will miss this series 🥹

That is when I started to cry.

I am soft about the ending of childhood - those folders won't be picked up again, but the story continues with Holly.

I would like to have seen Dr Owens, and agree seeing Enzo even for a second would have been nice.

But. It was so refreshing to have an ending that is exactly that- no final scene where you see the mind flayer or the upside down.

DallasMajor · 02/01/2026 11:35

I thought Dustin doing exactly what Eddie said he would do during graduation was a nice touch.

It really was a rite of passage.
Just reading this would they do the spin off with the younger kids?

Derek the Delightful has def made a big impact!
Suck my fat one is an homage to Stand by Me.
As are many other references-the ultimate 80's coming of age film.
And they did the grown up thing after but they were much more grown up in SBM.

DallasMajor · 02/01/2026 11:56

I just watched an interview where the Duffer brothers said the spin off would be with different actors/characters.

I think they can only go back in time for a spin off.

2026onwardsandup · 02/01/2026 12:05

I have watched it for a second time and have some further thoughts .
I was quite annoyed that they didn’t really show anything about Murray as he featured heavily in the last two series . But then spotted both him and the school teacher cheering on Dustin at the graduation . I suppose as they were grown up we didn’t really need to see how their lives; “panned out “. We didn’t really need to see this for Hopper and Joyce either , but they were main characters throughout .

I watched it at the beginning . I think I may have watched the first series but didn’t really feel “ hooked in “. I then didn’t really watch it again until my kids were old enough and I enjoyed watching it with them .

I personally felt there was too long between the seasons and for the gap between the fourth and fifth season . Although I had rewatched a few episodes in advance I still struggled a bit to remember some of the characters and especially sibling groups .

So I possibly wasn’t as invested in the series as my DC . I did get back into the excitement of it .

I do think when you have fans that have been invested in the series for so many years , that the Duffer brothers had a really difficult task to provide a good ending for the fans , characters and also the actors that had grown up with them .

So I can see why they spent a lot of time tying things up . I still think that it was too long and they could have given us some action and condensed the final half .

I also agree with what others have said i.e the peril / danger they were in - it didn’t really seem plausible that we didn’t have more deaths . They could have killed off one of the non main characters e.g Vickie . I think it would have been difficult if they had killed off more of the main characters / any of the younger siblings .

My favourite characters were Steve and Robin . I know it would have been difficult to kill off Steve as he was such a likeable character and had really matured throughout . I liked how he was the one that stayed in Hawkins and went into teaching / coaching .

Unlike others I didn’t cry at all at the end which is unusual for me as I do generally at the end of a series .

On the whole I do think I didn’t think it wasn’t a perfect final episode but that
they did deliver on the ending .

Not being pissy with you but is that really a spin off then?

I guess it could be in hawkins with the lab in the early days?

Interesting 🤔

Interesting 🤔

I've heard rumours of a few spin offs and prequel series - The Creeds being one of them. Tbh although I love it I think they should let it lie. I loved the whole SK vibes, especially from the first season, and was excited the DBs were going to do The Talisman but apparently that's been binned. I would like to see the DBs so something with less Netflix involvement and less mega budget as that was really were they were strong.

I think the gap between S4 and 5 was their main issue. S4 ended with the big 'earth quake' and I think if they'd been able to get cracking quickly they could have picked up the storyline almost immediately and the urgency wouldn't have gone for Hawkins itself. I'm guessing they didn't do this as they needed the characters to age up to explain the actors looking so different.

Also a random thought, maybe it wasn't Kali's blood making the pregnant women sick but the fact they were holding them in the upside down? They seemed like they insinuated a few times the white particles might be damaging. Doesn't really matter I supposed but I wish they hadn't thrown such a dark storyline in there without a bit more thought.

HollyGolightly4 · 02/01/2026 12:55

I think it ultimately started as a kids show and so the lack of death was quite refreshing!

Also, I think Mike turning writer is such a homage to Stephen King.

Absolutely & again, Stand By Me.

Also, for everyone saying no one died, Kali died! Appreciate not a lot of people liked her & were suspicious, however I did like her & was gutted when she died & really felt for El as she was her ‘sister’. She was also integral to saving the children, so was a key hero!

I cried at her death (& then pretty much kept on crying Grin)

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 02/01/2026 13:05

I feel oddly short changed and I can’t put my finger on one thing but rather lots of little things .

like many pp I feel t he last episode didn’t balance out the battle with the last 30 mins of coming of age stuff. Agree that’s a very true 80s ending but I feel the battle was too short. And yes compared to how epic the fight at star court was, it was very flat. No real action in comparison. Actually it all looked fairly easy 😁 While I didn’t want any deaths I wasn’t in the the edge of my seat like in past seasons. It was like the writers had done a runner and a load of newbies took over, the energy wasn’t what I have enjoyed throughout the show. For example when Eleven realises she can jump over the rocks in the UD we were like oooh, can’t wait to see that. Then we didn’t! It was as if they couldn’t be bothered really writing her in until the very last minute.

I tho I had they made the 18 months later bit shorter and spent more time defeating Vecchna and the MF it would have been more true to ST. Even Mike suddenly being a writer felt like a half hearted nod to Stand By Me.

DallasMajor · 02/01/2026 13:13

Agree, and the audience had grown up and new younger audience had joined. That was difficult.

@MrsMitford3 the interviewer used the term spin off, but I can't see it being one - more of a prequel, I guess it is too big of a money spinner to not continue.

Back to El- Kali says that 'I'm not going to make it.. my story was going to end here'

Not our story, Hopper was out of the way, the blood was all on the entry wound where normally bullets have blood on the exit. So I more than believe.

DallasMajor · 02/01/2026 13:15

Where does Henry's body go back to? Because they kill Vecna and the children return to their bodies, surely Henry's actual body would return somewhere.

DallasMajor · 02/01/2026 13:46

Back to El 😂

How could she stay in the upside down without getting blown away for so long? We can see all the background in a hurricane but she isn't moving at all. Completely believe.

DallasMajor · 02/01/2026 13:57

Justcantwin89 · 02/01/2026 00:08

Did anyone hear the heart beat? I think it's an hour 23 ish in.
Just after El disappears and its a blank screen, first you hear the clock then a heart beat then the bricks being laid.
Maybe best to listen on your phone right to your ear or with headphones.

Yes, just heard this, although subtitles didn't pick it up.

DallasMajor · 02/01/2026 14:37

I'm boring myself now, but Hopper orders a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon and not Chianti which is what he kept talking about when he was in Russia (Silence of the lambs link, which is now over)

Invisablepanic · 02/01/2026 14:54

I agree Mike as a writer was a nod to stand by me but also IT, I always thought the library was a nod as well. I see ST as a mash UK between Firestarter, SBM and IT. I'm fact I've read it was SK who tweeted about MBB and the duffers discovered her from that - that might be total bollox mind!

hmdxm1 · 02/01/2026 14:56

And a nice full circle moment as the actor of Mike was in the 2016 IT remake! And was the scifi writer character I think!

Definitely - was great.

hmdxm1 · 02/01/2026 15:09

I don’t think it ever started as a kids show, it was never aimed at children, it’s a show aimed at adults nostalgic for their youth. That’s what was unusual about it, a show with a mostly young cast but an older audience.

Agree. It had kids as the main protagonists, but that doesn't make it a kids' show.

Henry’s actual body IS Vecna. He turned into Vecna when El cast him into the Abyss.

Of course, we see that when he walks into the new world, I had forgotten about that, then maybe it's a shame he didn't turn back into Henry, but maybe chopping off a humans head would be too gory.
