With Tom Daley who annoys me but I like that it’s proper knitting not dumbed down and they’re starting with a fairisle tank top

It must be freezing in the yarn barn looking at the number of jumpers and blankets they’re wearing!
and is crochet a swear word? Not heard it mentioned yet but Theres lots of examples dotted around

SheinIsShite · 02/11/2025 20:56

Well it's a knitting comp not a crochet comp.

Madcats · 02/11/2025 21:01

Late to the party…that was a bad choice for the first exclusion.

autumntimebrowns · 02/11/2025 21:04

@SheinIsShite I’m sure there was a crochet hook in the beginning titles.

tesseractor · 02/11/2025 21:05

They are going to be crocheting later on. And apparently the website to apply mentioned being able to knit and crochet, but that they were using knitting as the general term……. just one of a list of factors why this programme started in the back foot with me. Along with Tom Daley - cannot stand the fawning around celebrity male knitters.

Nofksleft2give · 02/11/2025 21:06

What a disappointing show. Why did they not get to showcase their individual knits? We only saw two or three tank tops. Or maybe I missed a bit?

2Rebecca · 02/11/2025 21:07

I spoke too soon about them not dumbing down, knitting for dogs FFS!

Very interested to see how this develops as v. experienced knitter and crocheter. The concept of a tight timescale scares me tbh so I was surprised to see how slowly and clumsily some of the contestants were knitting. I expected them to be flicking away madly - feel a lot better about my own speed now. Not keen on the judges so far, they're not very charismatic- but the contestants seem nice.

2Rebecca · 02/11/2025 21:10

They wizzed through some of the tank tops. I’d have preferred them to ditch the group knit and focus on a tank top someone would wear and do more knitting instruction and history as watching people knit is boring

I think having to handle those huge needles would have slowed some of them down. I’ve recently knitted something with bigger needles than I’d usually use (7.5 mm compared to 4 mm or less) and it took me a while to get used to them. And they looked to be v big needles.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 02/11/2025 21:11

Sort of enjoyed it but think the format will struggle as it goes on. Knitting/crochet obviously takes a lot of time so in order to make the programme I fear the challenges will be increasingly stupid.

Tom modelled each of them (except the one that wouldn’t go over his head)?

AsideFromThis · 02/11/2025 21:16

Can anyone link to the judge’s amazing poncho pattern, please?

My husband knits and sews 🤷🏼 He's telling me what the terms mean!

And mine! In fact he’s watching it whilst knitting me some knee warmers for my arthritis!

TBH I can knit but don’t, this really isn’t doing much for me. And FFS put Tome Daley in something that vaguely resembles clothing!

BishyBarnyBee · 02/11/2025 21:20

Why would you cut the armholes rather than just knit them?

And where can I get the pattern for the jumper Lydia is wearing?

Haaaruuuumph · 02/11/2025 21:21

Myself and my DD looked at each other a few times with a 'wtf are we watching here'?

Somehow I don't think there'll be a 2nd series

Oops, I was playing around with watching live and restart! Thanks, will watch again tomorrow.

That’s the traditional way of knitting fair isle, with steeking.

LlamaNoDrama · 02/11/2025 21:27

I did enjoy it but I am a bit worried everything will end up being in chunky wool due to time! I can't see how they can judge team work on an individual basis really.

The basic idea is there. A show similar to Bake Off or Sewing Bee, but for knit/crochet. But the issues are clear - knitting takes sooooo much longer so you either have to get them to make something small, or use massive thick yarn. A fair isle beanie might have been fairer but also more within their comfort zone and there is no drama if everyone does well.

VioletandDill · 02/11/2025 21:29

I just wonder how they're going to work in an opportunity for Tom to get his top off. They managed it in Traitors...🤣

BishyBarnyBee · 02/11/2025 21:29

Watching on delay so a bit behind the rest of you. Bit bemused by the crying judge - surely Keith Brymer Jones has cornered that particular style of judging?

Bumbles55 · 02/11/2025 21:58

Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters · 02/11/2025 20:34

Turned over after 10 mins sorry. What actually is the point? Knitting with massive needles to creat an ugly garment that no one would want to wear. To me knitting is the very antithesis of fast fashion and that is it's beauty. It's about taking time to create a beautiful garment and enjoying the mindful nature of the process. Why does everything have to be reduced to a competition?

Britain's best knitter my arse!!!

And Tom Daley can get in the bin too!!

You sound like fun at parties! I love a good chunky knit - much more fashionable these days.

viques · 02/11/2025 22:05

It really isn’t very exciting to watch is it. They are obviously very talented craftspeople, but I don’t think there is going to be much chance of seeing their skills and learning anything from them as there is with other similar shows. Adn as others have pointed out TD is irritating in the extreme. To add to the programmes woes the judges, while perfectly pleasant people, don’t seem to have much personality or the ability to explain and elaborate on what the competitors are doing.

I don’t think I will be watching another episode, I might have drying paint to entertain me next week,. 🙂
