Celeb traitors - why do the celebs take over everything?

mids2019 · 16/10/2025 06:38

I am old enough to remember come dancing with non celebratory amateur/professional dancers before someone decided normal people weren't engaging to watch and decided it has to become a vehicle for celeb promotion.

Why do we need traitors with it's original concept which allowed the man and woman from the street to become another celebrity fest? The conversations seem staged and there is probably no conversation broadcast without the agreement of the celeb or agents so it all seems artificial (or more artificial) to me.

I don’t normally watch any celebrity type programs but I am enjoying this one. It’s quite interesting to see the dynamics between people and how previous relationships are shaping things.

emilyinrutshire · 16/10/2025 06:41

Personally I agree but I suppose people must watch it otherwise there would be no need for it. I love Traitors but cannot be bothered to watch any of the celeb one.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 16/10/2025 06:44

Because more people will watch it, so it will make more money for the network.

It’s the same reason celebrities walk into book deals. Who knew the famous dyslexic Jamie Oliver, who claimed never to have read a book, would suddenly develop late-onset children’s fiction writing abilities? Or that Anton du Beke was a wordsmith, as well as a dancer? Or Carol the weather forecaster?

Drives me mad.

mids2019 · 16/10/2025 06:48

I think it is cynical to take a really popular concept and allow a celebratory take over when we all know that celebs are highly conscious of their public image and in a lot cases good at acting. I just don't feel it's natural at all and I think many in the castle are wishing a career lift which the spotlight of the program provides.

Can we have the old traitors back?

OP posts:
BlueEyedBogWitch · 16/10/2025 06:49

My preferred option would be to lock the castle doors, quietly turn the cameras off and creep away.

Let them eat each other.

Can you imagine?

I don’t think I’ve ever been so envious of anyone.

Is that dreary old toad still alive?

You haven’t heard of Stephen fry?

Or Claire balding, Tom Daley or Celia Imrie? Or Jonathan Ross and Alan Carr? They are big mainstream tv people.

opencecilgee · 16/10/2025 07:05

The dynamic is different in celebrity traitors

Nonenof them care that much. They have nothing to gain or lose by winning

they can take more risks and be bolder

Sevenamcoffee · 16/10/2025 07:05

I’m enjoying it as I do at least know who most of them are in this case and this does add an extra dimension of interest for me. I don’t know how long the general format will last because it’s becoming repetitive/predictable.

Thst would explain it.

I know who Tom Daley is, though I doubt I'd recognise him in more than speedos.

I have no expectations for a British TV show, other than its staying off my TV set.

PermanentTemporary · 16/10/2025 07:10

I’ve seen a few posts from
people who never watched the Traitors previously but are doing so this time. There’s your answer.

Some people like watching slebs do things. I’m not enjoying it but dp is unfortunately. The only thing i am quite enjoying is a bit of nostalgia for Jonathan Ross who’s radio show I literally used to set the alarm for, plus gazing at Charlotte Church ❤️

ShesTheAlbatross · 16/10/2025 07:13

The BBC was unusual for doing a fully non-celeb version I believe. In other countries, including where it started, it was always celebrities, or a mix of celebrities and non-celebrities.

I actually quite like the celeb version. It’s a bit more fun because some of them know each other, and because the money isn’t for them. The last series got a little bit nasty towards the end, presumably because of the stakes involved for the people. Maybe the celebs will also get a bit nasty but I doubt it - not because I think they’re nicer people, but because they don’t have a huge amount of money for themselves at stake.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 16/10/2025 07:16

I agree.

Not seen Traitors but now you see Catch Phrase only ever with celebs and I think it's a shame Joe public never get a chance to play any more. (Although have you noticed they've made the clues way more obvious for the celeb version!)

I love Richard Osman House of Games but I'd prob love it more if they weren't only annoying celebs playing it.

I love the 1% Club for keeping it real and only using the public, but I suspect that because they need so many.

slightlyunimpressed · 16/10/2025 07:21

I’m enjoying it more than normal traitors as there are lots of past contacts and relationships being brought in which are adding to the guessing. And it’s the first time on a celeb anything that I’ve known who more than one or two of them are.

Wordless · 16/10/2025 07:27

Obviously the dynamic is different - there’s no real tension because there’s no prize that will make a huge difference to someone’s life.

Still, Claudia is as watchable as ever; everyone’s clothes and interactions are entertaining, and it’s well produced. I don’t mind as they’re actual celebrities - people I’ve heard of (mostly) - but in a couple of years they’ll only be ‘celebrities’ in the Strictly sense …

Brooklyn70 · 16/10/2025 07:28

they’re not taking over, this programme is an addition to the non-celeb one , which i believe will be broadcast in january

Radiatorvalves · 16/10/2025 07:32

Most sleb things are made up of Z listers (who I’ve never heard of). This is different - I knew of about 80% of them. I like traditional traitors but this has a different dynamic. Loving it.

forgotmyusername1 · 16/10/2025 07:37

I think something interesting about this series is the celebrities on there are doing it as they are themselves fans of the show and want to play the game. They aren't there for the money (apart from maybe one or two of the less known ones) - to people like stephen fry and Jonathan Ross 40k is chump change. Celia imrie is having fun snooping and playing detective. Alan Carr is self proclaimed 'worse than linda' and stephen fry has long said he would never do reality TV but he loves this game. They are all having a blast and it shows

Umy15r03lcha1 · 16/10/2025 07:57

They win the money for charity.
I've never watched traitors before but am really enjoying the celebrity version, heard of most of them.

Edited to add they're probably there for their own PR reasons, ie new series, book, album, whatever, but it's still a good mix and at least they're proper slebs, most of them.
