Celeb traitors - why do the celebs take over everything?

mids2019 · 16/10/2025 06:38

I am old enough to remember come dancing with non celebratory amateur/professional dancers before someone decided normal people weren't engaging to watch and decided it has to become a vehicle for celeb promotion.

Why do we need traitors with it's original concept which allowed the man and woman from the street to become another celebrity fest? The conversations seem staged and there is probably no conversation broadcast without the agreement of the celeb or agents so it all seems artificial (or more artificial) to me.

OP posts:

I've never watched the original series, just watching the celeb one.

It's interesting /entertaining because I have my own thoughts on the contestants already. I wouldn't be interested if they were non-celebs that I'd never seen before.

I wouldn't have watched this if it was the usual reality show people and fairly unknown 'celebs'

Cheesytwists · 16/10/2025 08:05

Yes, they win the money for charity but it was on another thread that they each got paid £40k to take part - hence why the money may mean more to some.

they’re not taking over, this programme is an addition to the non-celeb one , which i believe will be broadcast in january

Exactly.

We are loving the celeb version.

I haven't heard of any of these fuckers anyway.

YABU for expecting a shit telly show to be less shit. Go watch old movies on youtube or read a fucken book.

Liar.

I’ve never seen either Jonathan Ross or Alan carr’s shows. I still know who they are.

I find it very difficult indeed to belive anyone has never heard of Stephen fry,

I have no idea why anyone who’s had zero contact with even a newspaper in 30 or 40 years is on a social media site replying to threads about celebrities.

The problem is non celebrity things often get filled with wanna be celebrities now days anyway

Lots of the non celeb reality stuff is full of people trying to make their mark as an influencer, tv personality which skews it. People act in odd ways, in big extremes with huge personalities that mean it doesn't seem like ordinary people doing it anyway and isnt relatable

The nice thing about the celebrity traitors is they dont seem to have anything to prove as much which means it actually seems much more normal. None of them seem to be massively trying to carve a career out of it, Possibly due to it being a higher level of celeb than normal as opposed to the other celeb things with tedious celeb links. The non celeb version over here has got more "influencer", let me make a catchphrase etc as time has gone on

The only non celeb thing which seems to have retained good casting is race across the world imo.

Agree with this - this is one of the advantages of celeb versions of things. At least when they’re proper celebs.

These celebs are clearly fans of the programme and as a whole have a pretty high level of intelligence so it’s working well.

I have no expectations for a British TV show, other than its staying off my TV set.

This probably isn't the thread for you then, is it?!

I think it is cynical to take a really popular concept and allow a celebratory take over when we all know that celebs are highly conscious of their public image and in a lot cases good at acting. I just don't feel it's natural at all and I think many in the castle are wishing a career lift which the spotlight of the program provides.

Can we have the old traitors back?

Can we have our old traitors back

I think there will continue to be a non-celeb version, won't there?

xsquared · 16/10/2025 08:28

The Weakeat Link is only with celebrities now, but I thinkn it makes it a friendlier game as they are playing for charity.

The celebroty contestants have good camaraderie during the vote reveal, and those who get voted off are not so bitter and horrible to others during their exit interview.

SeriaMau · 16/10/2025 08:37

ShesTheAlbatross · 16/10/2025 07:13

The BBC was unusual for doing a fully non-celeb version I believe. In other countries, including where it started, it was always celebrities, or a mix of celebrities and non-celebrities.

I actually quite like the celeb version. It’s a bit more fun because some of them know each other, and because the money isn’t for them. The last series got a little bit nasty towards the end, presumably because of the stakes involved for the people. Maybe the celebs will also get a bit nasty but I doubt it - not because I think they’re nicer people, but because they don’t have a huge amount of money for themselves at stake.

So… What’s the point? Do they care if their chosen charity gets £50K or £100K? No. Do they care if they stay on the show for 5 or 6 weeks? No - their agent is already saying they have a new gig lined up so collect the attendance fee and get booted out asap.

PalePinkPeony · 16/10/2025 08:52

BlueEyedBogWitch · 16/10/2025 06:57

Can you imagine?

I don’t think I’ve ever been so envious of anyone.

Why? Stephen fry has given me a lot of entertainment over the years.
Anyone over the age of 40 who hasn’t seen blackadder IV isn’t worth knowing in my opinion 🤣

Fun?
Whimsy?
Competitiveness?
For some, profile building (I don’t think that applies to all of them, I don’t believe Celia Imrie, Jonathan Ross, Alan Carr need to build their profile, especially for a £40k fee if that amount is correct).

ETA - it may be shown over 4ish weeks but I’d imagine it’s only filmed over about a week/10 days. They aren’t in Scotland for a month. So going out early just means they’re home a couple of days earlier than they thought. No real benefit in terms of doing other work.

Squadron Commander Lord Flashheart and Captain Darling aside, Blackadder Goes Forth was the weakest instalment.

Fry was just about tolerable in Blackadder II where he was playing himself- a pompous bore elevated above his talents and deserts. He didn't have to act much there.

CurlewKate · 16/10/2025 09:11

I prefer celebrity versions of things because I can be reasonably sure they are not being manipulated for my “pleasure”, or doing things that are damaging to them because they are desperate for for the sake of a couple of grand.

JeffTheSquirrel · 16/10/2025 09:21

Worth it for Celia’s fart, alone.

Yes, they’re just adding a new twist, rather than replacing the old version.

Personally I’m quite enjoying it. There can be something a bit Hunger Games when it’s played by non-celebrities for whom winning the money would be a huge deal. In the recent Irish version where the prize money was small,, I think literally every single contestant under the age of about 40 said they would put it towards a house/flat deposit because it was impossible to save while renting. Playing for a charity takes that out of it.

InAHammock · 16/10/2025 09:33

But they’ll have had the full fortnight blocked out in their diary anyway, so going home early is no particular advantage to them or their schedule.

Old Traitors will be back in January like normal. It's not like they've replaced it with the celebrity one.

There is room for both and quite a lot of us are enjoying the Celeb version.

🤦🏻‍♀️ so it's the Mrs Brown's Boys audience it's playing to then.

Poor Celia.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 16/10/2025 07:16

I agree.

Not seen Traitors but now you see Catch Phrase only ever with celebs and I think it's a shame Joe public never get a chance to play any more. (Although have you noticed they've made the clues way more obvious for the celeb version!)

I love Richard Osman House of Games but I'd prob love it more if they weren't only annoying celebs playing it.

I love the 1% Club for keeping it real and only using the public, but I suspect that because they need so many.

I agree with you about 1% club, switched off the soccer aid special half way through because I found it so boring but I love HOC with celebs because nobody takes it too seriously and Richard nicely takes the piss out of many of them.

Equally I'd never want to watch non celeb amateurs on Strictly as it would bore me to tears.

I really recommend non celeb Traitors though. Series 2 is epic in my view.

Not in my house it isn't. Never watched MBB in my life.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 16/10/2025 06:44

Because more people will watch it, so it will make more money for the network.

It’s the same reason celebrities walk into book deals. Who knew the famous dyslexic Jamie Oliver, who claimed never to have read a book, would suddenly develop late-onset children’s fiction writing abilities? Or that Anton du Beke was a wordsmith, as well as a dancer? Or Carol the weather forecaster?

Drives me mad.

This.

And OP I totally agree, House of Games is another one. And don’t get me started on the Richard Osman book/movie deal.

mind you with the celebrity game shows it does show some up as just how thick celebrities can be…

🤣 disagree they were all fabulous in their own ways. Although flashheart and rik mayall in general will always have my heart.
I think fry is amazing and entertaining. Don’t find him pompous in the slightest. Listened to him for hours on audio books. He is extremely intelligent and IMO funny but of course that’s subjective.
Just can’t fathom how anyone old enough wouldn’t have seen even a few episodes of blackadder but there we go!

Yes of course. It's a massive hit for the Beeb, they're not going to kill off their golden goose.

The OP is just being a touch melodramatic.

gggddjkki · 16/10/2025 09:58

Normally I’d completely agree, I never watch the celebrity version of anything (master chef etc) but it really helps they’ve got such a good line up of contestants, it’s not all love island and geordie shore rejects, I actually knew nearly all of them for once!
