Celeb traitors - why do the celebs take over everything?

mids2019 · 16/10/2025 06:38

I am old enough to remember come dancing with non celebratory amateur/professional dancers before someone decided normal people weren't engaging to watch and decided it has to become a vehicle for celeb promotion.

Why do we need traitors with it's original concept which allowed the man and woman from the street to become another celebrity fest? The conversations seem staged and there is probably no conversation broadcast without the agreement of the celeb or agents so it all seems artificial (or more artificial) to me.

I really like this version because they’re celebrities.

They are all successful, intelligent and talented, which is why they’re there. But more than that they all know what makes good TV. They all know how producers think. It adds another level of overthinking which is different from the naivity of the non-celeb version.

Their egos are fun to watch and you don’t worry quite so much for their welfare.

I am thoroughly enjoying it.

🤦🏻‍♀️ so it's the Mrs Brown's Boys audience it's playing to then.

Poor Celia.

I’ve never seen Mrs Brown’s Boys.

The laughter in that cabin was infectious, and Celia absolutely owned it. She specifically approved it being included in the broadcast.

And farts are funny. If you don’t think that, I pity you. I suspect you are somewhat lacking in the sense of humour department.

pontivex · 16/10/2025 10:20

I love how most of them are household names so we think we know them and their personalities from their on screen personas but that’s not quite how it’s playing out and sometimes working against them. I like how that’s different to normal traitors when we get to know people slowly.
What’s great is seeing their true selves come out! Clare the mother Director figure, Celia the sleuth (and hilarious farter), Alan the Machiavellian evil one, Stephen the philosopher and narrator, Charlotte Church getting angry with anyone who crosses her. Joe Wilkinson the quiet assassin.

Love it. And it think paying for a charity makes it more intense for them as it will be things close to their heart. I prefer that rather then ‘Shirley who wants to take her kids to Disneyland and buy a RangeRover’

pontivex · 16/10/2025 10:22

And also watching Alan being the WORST liar ever ‘ooh you’ve got a bit of hair Paloma….’ Cringe.

JacknDiane · 16/10/2025 10:24

BlueEyedBogWitch · 16/10/2025 06:57

Can you imagine?

I don’t think I’ve ever been so envious of anyone.

Brilliant 👏Grin

anyway@mids2019 , i totally agree with you, why do overindulged celebs need even more attention

RandomGeocache · 16/10/2025 06:59

Or Claire balding, Tom Daley or Celia Imrie? Or Jonathan Ross and Alan Carr? They are big mainstream tv people.

One must be Pretty unaware of current events / modern culture if you haven’t even heard of one of those people.

Why is that cringe? What would you have said if you had to touch someone’s face when you had just arrived in the past 24 hours and everyone is on their guard?
I think he did rather well all things considered

This.

And OP I totally agree, House of Games is another one. And don’t get me started on the Richard Osman book/movie deal.

mind you with the celebrity game shows it does show some up as just how thick celebrities can be…

I read a whole page of one of the Osman books. It was all written with question marks? Even though they weren't questions? Total shite.

Julie Burchill summed up Fry brilliantly: "A stupid person’s idea of a clever person." The pampered old pseud.

You think she summed Fry up perfectly? I thought you’d never heard of any of the people on the show? How could you judge her view of him as accurate? I’d agree with her, but I’m not pretending to never have even heard of him.

SingtotheCat · 16/10/2025 13:19

Stephen Fry is very pleased with himself and irritating. That aside, it’s decent entertainment. No more, no less.

surreygirly · 16/10/2025 13:21

more to the point why dopes anyone watch such mindless drivel whoever is in it

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 16/10/2025 14:11

🙄 What do people get out of coming onto a thread about a program they don't watch and sneering at the people who do? Does it make them feel good? If so then I might suggest they get a hobby.

KitsyWitsy · 16/10/2025 16:41

SeriaMau · 16/10/2025 08:37

So… What’s the point? Do they care if their chosen charity gets £50K or £100K? No. Do they care if they stay on the show for 5 or 6 weeks? No - their agent is already saying they have a new gig lined up so collect the attendance fee and get booted out asap.

I think they do care. I thought the same as you initially. What's it to them really how much goes to charity but I can see, especially from this series how invested they are, how much they love playing the game and I expect they all want as much screen time as possible.

KitsyWitsy · 16/10/2025 16:44

I don't know how anyone could have not heard of all the celebrities in the show. It's an incredible lineup! There are only a few I hadn't heard of/knew.

My favourites are Mark Bonnar and Allan Carr.

I can't bloody stand Stephen Fry. Bloody prick.

Lampzade · 16/10/2025 16:47

I haven’t watched ‘Traitors’ but I am thoroughly enjoying the celebrity version .

NaranjaDreams · 16/10/2025 16:48

The viewing figures are insane. It’s on course to be the most watched Traitors ever.

there’s no suggestion it’ll replace the original, so I’d just enjoy it (or avoid it) as a separate thing.

I think it is cynical to take a really popular concept and allow a celebratory take over when we all know that celebs are highly conscious of their public image and in a lot cases good at acting. I just don't feel it's natural at all and I think many in the castle are wishing a career lift which the spotlight of the program provides.

Can we have the old traitors back?

Actors might be good at acting, but they have a script and take direction from somebody else. They aren't used to flying solo, or making up whopping lies as they go along.

Because it was done SO BADLY! ‘Oh you’ve got a hair’ and then pushing her hair behind her ear was so weird. Paloma was like 🫤. It was so out of character I thought she would have twigged immediately.

Surely you would have said something like ‘oh you’ve got a smudge’ or a crumb or something rather than the hair. I think if I were him I would have told an amusing anecdote or a joke that involved touching a face or giving someone a hug and squeezing their head or something.

Nobody has taken regular traitors away. Series 4 has already been filmed to show after Christmas. Celeb traitors is an additional series.

TyroleanKnockabout · 17/10/2025 22:30

I may watch mindless drivel now and again, but at least I’m not a miserable sod like some of yous. It’s harmless fun and you don’t even have to watch it, lighten the feck up.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 18/10/2025 00:34

APTPT · 16/10/2025 06:52

I haven't heard of any of these fuckers anyway.

YABU for expecting a shit telly show to be less shit. Go watch old movies on youtube or read a fucken book.

I've read over 200 books this year. I'm also watching (and loving) Celeb Traitors. I hardly watch any celeb stuff, or reality type TV, so this is my guilty pleasure.

Unlike most other shows, this actually has people I've heard of, which makes a difference. Id be annoyed if they'd replaced the original version with a celeb one, but this is as well as and I think it's interesting to see how differently it's played
No one can lie about their real identity and most of them know each other already.

Purplebunnie · 18/10/2025 14:24

I've watched only a couple of episodes of the original Traitors but I am happier with the celebs. Although the celebs probably get paid, the prize money is going to charity, not some grabby jumped up little twit who wanted their 15 minutes of fame.

thecatfromneptune · 18/10/2025 14:27

As an alternative view, this lot honestly seem more clued up and quicker on the uptake about the whole thing than the average non-celebrity contestants. Stephen, Clare, Celia and a few others are already getting the names of the traitors right - whereas in a normal people series they often go for weeks completely fooled!

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 18/10/2025 14:38

I think Stephen Fry is coming across really well on this and less pompous than he appears on interviews etc. also I hate that Julie Burchill quote - he is very clever whether you like him or not (and I am not stupid).
