newyorknewyorkforevernewyork · 20/09/2025 18:38

With Alexander Armstrong (the voice of Hey Duggee!) and Caroline Quentin, first aired in 2006 I think

All three seasons are now on Netflix

It might be my winter watch, very much up my street

Did anyone catch it the first time around?

pleased to see a thread about this.
i didnt see it before

Im binge watching it instead of doing urgent jobs. My weekend has been wasted 😂

absolutely same here!

SulkySeagull · 22/09/2025 06:32

I’m watching this for the first time and loving it, but the husband is giving me the rage! Just deciding one day he doesn’t like his life, leaving and living like a single man while she’s left with the house and kids and no money. What a wanker.

OP you can’t have gone through life without seeing CQ on tv before?! Johnathan creek, Men behaving badly?

snemrose · 22/09/2025 06:26

I watched this when I saw it come up on Netflix, somehow I missed it the first time round.
I don’t think it has aged well at all and Alexander Armstrongs character is insufferable- unfortunately I know men who still behave like that.
I also thought AA was a crap actor which really upset me because normally I really like him!

He’s a bit Pointless isn’t He? Sorry, couldn’t resist

StrongLikeMamma · 22/09/2025 07:45

Ooo was looking for a new show. Thanks op 🙌

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/09/2025 07:52

AA has quite a chubby face in this
so interesting to see where the other actors went to after this - or didnt!

I caught a few episodes of this when it ran on TV. I was a newlywed now I'm early 40s i do look at it so differently. Phil is such a prick I can't stand him .

Frannieisnthappy · 05/10/2025 01:39

it was such a ridiculous 3rd series.

Ya I thought it went off the rails especially the last episode. Don't want to spoil it but that whole storyline with the son was unbelievable

Overandone · 05/10/2025 08:04

I didn’t see this first time but I’ve just watched it and really liked it. I found it interesting that family dynamics for a lot of people haven’t changed and that the women are still doing so much more. I really disliked Phil and much preferred Paul. Despite how old it was, I found it a really good watch.

I’ve watched Last Tango in Halifax and that was really good.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/10/2025 08:33

i gave up at the end of series 2 , particularly on the advice here

LadydeBathe · 05/10/2025 09:07

We watched the whole wretched thing and I really don’t know why.

The acting did not get any better, in fact it got worse. Caroline Quentin spent the whole thing basically doing exactly the same facial expression in place of any actual acting, and Alexander Armstrong, well let’s just say, stick to quiz shows.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/10/2025 09:09

yes, it was annoying in the beginning.
improved
but i wasnt happy by the end of series 2 with Paul leaving. and i wont ruin it any more for myself

TennisWithDeborah · 05/10/2025 13:25

Yrs, series 3 wasn’t great. I thought that Alexander was ok but he’s better as a presenter on Classic FM (he was awarded a music scholarship by Cambridge University I think).

LoudPlumDog · 05/10/2025 13:51

I’ve watched it all a few times before. I had it on DVD, but leant them to an old colleague and never got them back. I had a friend called Maggie at the time, her husband was Phil and he upped and left her one day close to the time I first watched it.
Im in Australia, wondering where I can watch this. Google is not helping.

lazymum99 · 05/10/2025 14:57

Missd this first time round. I’m well into season 2 now but I’m finding Phil incredibly annoying and the turning up all the time is just too much. If Paul leaves I won’t watch anymore (seem to have acquired a bit of a crush on the Paul actor 😳)

Purplebunnie · 05/10/2025 15:50

Just binged it. TBH the best thing to come out of it was her parents and the slow degeneration of her father, very well done

There were times when I disliked each of the the main characters, except for the son, I think he came out of it best, but perhaps my dislike shows that they were all human characters and well portrayed

Yes leave it there and you're not the only one lol. I was googling him whilst watching

newyorknewyorkforevernewyork · 05/10/2025 21:48

Still havent watched it 😪😪😪

Loved watching this series -watched originally but the rewatch hit differently

Such a cosy feeling

DayOfSummer · 19/10/2025 19:59

I’ve started watching this after it appearing on my Netflix recommends for ages. Agree it’s really dated but in a kind of nice cosy and nostalgic way. I’m older than CQ’s character but I don’t feel as old as she’s being portrayed to be! Was 39 really old back then? Because I certainly don’t feel that old and 39 seems really young to me! Hopefully this is because attitudes to people over the age of 30 have improved and I’m not just in denial.

I’m loving seeing motherland actors popping up like Julia’s mum and Kevin was in the first episode, I was thinking he looked familiar and it took me a while to place him. I’m very much loathing the Phil character. I’m only three episodes in and just really hoping she gets the upper hand over him in some way eventually otherwise I’m not sure I want to continue watching!

the80sweregreat · 19/10/2025 20:04

This is just fantastic! I missed it first time around ( not sure how ?) and dh and I love it. People smoking in pubs, phones not as sophisticated, coloured tiles in the kitchen and Anne Reid playing the horrible mum.
It’s just delicious.

the80sweregreat · 19/10/2025 20:05

Is season 3 not good? I can imagine that it Mighy go downhill a bit, but the first series is good ( so far )

GypsyQueeen · 19/10/2025 20:06

I watched it the first time round and then again last year.
Really enjoyed it. Also, love Caroline Quentin.
