I like Suranne Jones as an actress but I just can’t see past the Bridget Phillippson / Rachel Reeves style pelmet. (Sorry)

My main take away is the casting of the Downing Street cat is a Larry-look-a-like.

lovemetomybones · 24/08/2025 08:25

I really loved Virgil on the bbc with surrane I was hoping this would be as good

Bruisername · 24/08/2025 08:37

its going to kill my political career but I will agree to French troops on British soil vs just bloody resign!!

and all these people going from the uk to France - does the sw not understand geography? Or are these all the people who came to the uk and now are desperate to leave because of the medicine shortage?

Piggywaspushed · 24/08/2025 08:47

Yes, that whole bit made zero sense!

It's like they were trying to reflect 'issues' by reversing them all.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/08/2025 08:49

Giving it a hard swerve,I don't get the love for Suranne Jones, she was brilliant in Coronation Street but I've hated her on anything since.

MKDex · 24/08/2025 08:51

Its so boring, I gave up after episode 1.

Such shit writing, don't know who the writer is but they definitely didn't get this made on merit

Bruisername · 24/08/2025 08:54

So looked it up and the stepson was played by a British actor. Which makes no sense given the characters father was the Rupert murdoch of France

Piggywaspushed · 24/08/2025 08:55

I loved Suranne in Scott and Bailey. Now she keeps trying to play people who seem to be nothing like her. I mean it's obviously possible that she is more like them than she is like Scott/Bailey (genuinely can't remember!) but that felt more authentic.

Apparently it is written by the guy who wrote Bridge of Spies! Maybe the longer form is not for him.

FurForksSake · 24/08/2025 09:01

God, another one we have really enjoyed and everyone hates. We really like black doves and the assassin on prime.

we thought it was enjoyable for what it was, perhaps we just not cerebral enough 😆

Notmyreality · 24/08/2025 09:24

Truly awful. Susanne Jones totally miscast as the most unconvincing PM ever.

Bruisername · 24/08/2025 09:36

I wonder how many people watched this and said ‘that’s why we shouldn’t have female leaders’. Terrible representation

situation room - there wouldn’t be a phone signal so you wouldn’t have had the French president receive the text

the corrupt assistant just left to go anywhere she likes in Downing Street - wouldn’t happen (ditto the daughter - who looked 25)

the cabinet minister hauled from his car - as if there was no other security

the only thing I did believe was the MI6 guy on his own in French Guiana! Although why he was so blatantly following them?

and you’re married to the British pm but have to launch your own escape plan

janehopper · 24/08/2025 10:12

It was shite.

If I was the husband I'd be raging I'd lost two colleagues and nearly died because she wouldn't resign, just resign and sort it out later. She was doing a shit job anyway!

Was he following them?

I am sure they didn't notice he was following them!

saveforthat · 24/08/2025 21:13

I've only just watched episode 1 but why doesn't she pretend resign and then go back when her husband is safely home?

overwhelmedsinglema · 24/08/2025 21:14

I loved it! It was totally insane and unrealistic but kept me on the edge of my seat!

Rosecoffeecup · 24/08/2025 21:24

Utterly nonsense plot but I enjoyed it, bit of harmless drama

the80sweregreat · 24/08/2025 21:48

I liked Suranne Jones as Dr Foster ( I don’t watch Corrie ) but she was an unbelievable PM and I wondered why she didn’t fake resign until her Dh came home !
In fact Dh and I had a bit of a row as I said I would resign for him and he hesitated when I said would you resign for me .. 😆 ( he thinks she made the right decision!)
I didn’t hate it , but too many plot holes.
At least it’s only 5 episodes.

Fairyliz · 24/08/2025 22:46

Well I’m quite enjoying it in a it’s so bad it’s good way. The plot is terrible but I like the clothes.
DH has promised he would resign for me but as he is retired I am being grumpy because it’s just an empty promise 🤣

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2025 07:42

She was in a cleft stick situation though . If she had resigned , they still might not have released her Dh or made her replacement resign too and on it goes.
Holding firm was probably right , but so hard to say isn’t it.

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2025 07:49

At least it’s not mostly filmed in the dark and the sets look how I imagine number 10 inside to look like.
The plot is far fetched, but most dramas are on Netflix.

Piggywaspushed · 25/08/2025 07:54

I think the soapy music isn't doing it any favours to be honest.

HelenHywater · 25/08/2025 09:29

It was ridiculous but I also liked the clothes (of both the women).

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2025 12:39

The French PM wore some lovely clothes and SJ always looks cool in anything. So jealous !

IamEarthymama · 25/08/2025 13:51

I loved it!
it was absolute nonsense, however I can suspend my critical thinking when I want to and just enjoy!

I have a huge crush on Suranne Jones and love Julie Delpy too.
As the Guardian review said,
”It’s a rollicking, propulsive and compulsive yarn that also manages to give two great parts to two women of a certain age then leaves them to get on with it as characters rather than symbols.”
DW and I like a Scandi-noir but sometimes nonsense is just the thing.
