s2 starts Sunday and plot is below

If you're after a tense, thrilling heist drama inspired by a true story, then you're in luck as hit series The Gold is returning to the BBC for its second season – and you're not going to want to miss it.

Starring Hugh Bonneville as police officer Brian Boyce, the show is inspired by the real story and theories of the 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery, which saw Β£26 million worth of gold bullion stolen and a decades-long chain of events unfold.

The Gold season 2: Plot
The first season of the hit drama saw criminals involved in the theft and handling of the Brink’s-Mat gold sent to prison but the police soon learn that the criminals only ever had half of the stolen items.
Series two explores what happened to the other half, with the official synopsis as follows: "Following multiple court cases and convictions of some of those involved in the theft and handling of the Brink’s-Mat gold, the police realised that they had only ever been on the trail of half of the Brink’s-Mat gold.

Series two is inspired by some of the theories around what happened to the other half. As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime.
"The Brink’s-Mat Task Force embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police." Exciting!

We have the majority of the star-studded cast of the first season return for more, as well as some recognisable new faces. They are as follows:
β€’ Hugh Bonneville as Brian Boyce
β€’ Emun Elliott as DI Brightwell
β€’ Charlotte Spencer as DI Jennings

β€’	Tom Cullen as John Palmer
β€’	Stefanie Martini as Marnie Palmer
β€’	Jack Lowden as Kenneth Noye
β€’	Stephen Campbell Moore as Tony Lundy
β€’	Tom Hughes as Logan Campbell
β€’	Sam Spruell as Charlie Miller

As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime. The Brink’s-Mat Task Force embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police."

Meanwhile, the trailer also confirms the previously unannounced return of Jack Lowden as Kenneth Noye, after the character ended up in prison at the end of season 1.

Viewers can expect to see Lowden back in the series from episode 3 onwards

"As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime. The Brink’s-Mat Task Force embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police."

Also returning alongside Bonneville and Lowden are Charlotte Spencer, Emun Elliott, Tom Cullen, Stefanie Martini, Sam Spruell, Peter Davison, Amanda Drew, Silas Carson and James Nelson-Joyce.

From the synopsis , the second series is based on half of the gold which wasn't recovered and mentions theories so maybe not so much based on truth πŸ€”

I enjoyed the first one though so am hopeful for this one .

I thought S1 was really great - proper police procedural, on one level very easy to follow and enjoy, but the characterisation and performances were next-level and elevated the whole thing. Eg I suspect the junior female detective character was invented (have read books about Brinks Mat and her analogue doesn’t appear anywhere in them), and I usually find that kind of invention a bit annoying, but that actress is so good, convincing and charming and charismatic. And the relationship between the West Country gang member and his wife was very affecting and believable. Thought Lowden was totally fab in it as well, found him v scary at times and as someone else has said he’s usually so likeable. Really hoping they’ve pulled it off again.

Agree with all of this. Brilliant characterisation and script.

Looking forward to this - I worked for one of John Palmer's companies many moons ago (was young, naive & completely didn't realise how dodgy it all was). Will be interested to see how it's portrayed!

Her surroundings are certainly not salubrious.

Enjoyed that episode very much.
