thread here for s1

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4736596-the-gold-sunday-9pm-sunday-tv-pace-no-spoilers?utm_campaign=thread&utm_medium=app_share (https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4736596-the-gold-sunday-9pm-sunday-tv-pace-no-spoilers?utm_campaign=thread&utm_medium=app_share)

s2 starts Sunday and plot is below

If you're after a tense, thrilling heist drama inspired by a true story, then you're in luck as hit series The Gold is returning to the BBC for its second season – and you're not going to want to miss it.

Starring Hugh Bonneville as police officer Brian Boyce, the show is inspired by the real story and theories of the 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery, which saw Β£26 million worth of gold bullion stolen and a decades-long chain of events unfold.

The Gold season 2: Plot
The first season of the hit drama saw criminals involved in the theft and handling of the Brink’s-Mat gold sent to prison but the police soon learn that the criminals only ever had half of the stolen items.
Series two explores what happened to the other half, with the official synopsis as follows: "Following multiple court cases and convictions of some of those involved in the theft and handling of the Brink’s-Mat gold, the police realised that they had only ever been on the trail of half of the Brink’s-Mat gold.

Series two is inspired by some of the theories around what happened to the other half. As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime.
"The Brink’s-Mat Task Force embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police." Exciting!

We have the majority of the star-studded cast of the first season return for more, as well as some recognisable new faces. They are as follows:
β€’ Hugh Bonneville as Brian Boyce
β€’ Emun Elliott as DI Brightwell
β€’ Charlotte Spencer as DI Jennings

β€’	Tom Cullen as John Palmer
β€’	Stefanie Martini as Marnie Palmer
β€’	Jack Lowden as Kenneth Noye
β€’	Stephen Campbell Moore as Tony Lundy
β€’	Tom Hughes as Logan Campbell
β€’	Sam Spruell as Charlie Miller

As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime. The Brink’s-Mat Task Force embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police."

Meanwhile, the trailer also confirms the previously unannounced return of Jack Lowden as Kenneth Noye, after the character ended up in prison at the end of season 1.

Viewers can expect to see Lowden back in the series from episode 3 onwards

"As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime. The Brink’s-Mat Task Force embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police."

Also returning alongside Bonneville and Lowden are Charlotte Spencer, Emun Elliott, Tom Cullen, Stefanie Martini, Sam Spruell, Peter Davison, Amanda Drew, Silas Carson and James Nelson-Joyce.

I think I should have made notes to work out what island each one is on and who's following who at any one time!

It's very good.

A thought - the Palmers are real, a real family. How much of it is true? As in did he really have an affair and a baby with her? And how much is fiction? How far should fiction go?

His wiki page says he had children in addition to those with his wife. I’m only mentioning that as it’s been raised, obviously avoid wiki bios if you’re spoiler-averse!

Serpentstooth · 20/06/2025 07:46

Marnie Palmer has a book, Goldingfinger and Me. life with Mr Palmer. I haven't read it but it's probably selling well.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/06/2025 23:06

I think it would be a good book

We gave way and binged the last two episodes last night. No spoilers, obviously, but am now feeling sad that it's finished. Great series. The Kenny Noye actor oozes menace, as he should.

Yes. Lots of really good acting.

Was tempted last night to watch the last episode but resisted. (Watched Saltburn instead - loved it!) Gold such a good series and the acting is excellent.

I know. [hangs head in shame]

We do have quite a lot of creaky ancient crime series from the 1950s-1970s recorded so will probably catch up with one of those. (Talking Pictures channel, strongly recommended for other weirdoes people with these niche tastes.)

JFDIYOLO · 23/06/2025 20:10

Very impressed with the casting of the Palmers

I really enjoyed this. Considering I didn’t like s1 2yrs ago πŸ˜‚

I can be wrong sometimes πŸ˜›

I loved the stories all playing out at once
tho

never understood how noye who got life for Stephen (local to me) was out a few years later

and why all were infront of the cabin behind trees and no one was behind cabin behind trees so he ran for ages before getting jumped

wonder who shot palmer

so did the blonde one get away with it - the one who said they aren’t watching me anymore near the end

Do you mean Brian Reader, the one running the car lot? He said the police weren’t watching him anymore which made Kenneth realise they were on to him. I don’t know if he got away with it, the series didn’t focus on him. It was repeated that S2 was all about money recovery than whodunnit

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/06/2025 07:37

The things we watch on Talking Pictures (Freeview channel 82, I think) include Gideon of the Yard, Public Eye, Edgar Wallace's Mystery Hour (something like that), Scotland Yard. There are quite a lot of others. I think they put them all on in rotation. They seem to be repeating Crown Court and The Brothers, which both went on for a long, long time. They've had Dixon of Dock Green and Z Cars too. My favourite has been Danger Man with the lovely Patrick McGoohan. Absolute tosh for the most part but he is great, and there are obvious links to The Prisoner, which he made when he could finally stomach the ludicrous plots of Danger Man no more.

London Live used to be a good source of this stuff too but it's changed ownership and isn't to our tastes now. My husband remembers some of this stuff from the first time round. The quality varies a lot but there are often actors who became very well known later getting their start, and we enjoy seeing London as it used to be.

Any recommnendations for current series I could watch now The Gold is over?

placemats · 24/06/2025 09:38

Great ending to a very enjoyable series. I hope it gets awards. The court room scenes were hilarious and it's very easy to understand how people were conned by Palmer.

I'm racing through Murder 24/7.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/06/2025 09:42

Yes Brian. Thanks

I have sky so not sure if have that channel

If you’ve got any gold jewellery made in the U.K. in the last 40 years you may have some.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brink's-Mat_robbery#Gold

I think the Miller part of the story may have been fictitious so some of the missing half may still be hidden somewhere?

NeedWineNow · 26/06/2025 09:43

it was really good. Agree that Jack Lowden really encapsulated the menace of Kenny Noye. We live between West Kingsdown which was his β€˜manor’ and Sevenoaks where he now lives apparently. Treated as a bit of a local celebrity by some misguided people who want to hang on his coattails 😑

It was interesting that they introduced Brian Reader. He was one of the gang who did the Hatton Garden robbery and it was always said that he had something to do with Brinks Mat.

The series really belonged to Tom Cullen as John Palmer. What a great performance and what a nasty piece of work JP was. For those interested there is a really good podcast called Gangster which is about him. It’s available on BBC Sounds.

JFDIYOLO · 26/06/2025 09:53

Possible spoiler if you haven't finished it yet

πŸ‘‡

I thought Tom Cullen did an amazing job. Looking right helped - dark and handsome and electively charming (so you can see why real Marnie fell for Palmer). And the flashes of rage and menace when he lost control - brief and so telling.

The little story of the airport bar sting was brilliant. I wish they'd done more - tho it could have been a movie all by itself.

And the Phil Davis / Lundy reveal moment was fab.

The I divorce you scene ... 😍

The running ...

The courtrooms ...

The dodgy financial advisor was hilarious

Now I want to go and watch both series all over again
