s2 starts Sunday and plot is below

If you're after a tense, thrilling heist drama inspired by a true story, then you're in luck as hit series The Gold is returning to the BBC for its second season – and you're not going to want to miss it.

Starring Hugh Bonneville as police officer Brian Boyce, the show is inspired by the real story and theories of the 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery, which saw Β£26 million worth of gold bullion stolen and a decades-long chain of events unfold.

The Gold season 2: Plot
The first season of the hit drama saw criminals involved in the theft and handling of the Brink’s-Mat gold sent to prison but the police soon learn that the criminals only ever had half of the stolen items.
Series two explores what happened to the other half, with the official synopsis as follows: "Following multiple court cases and convictions of some of those involved in the theft and handling of the Brink’s-Mat gold, the police realised that they had only ever been on the trail of half of the Brink’s-Mat gold.

Series two is inspired by some of the theories around what happened to the other half. As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime.
"The Brink’s-Mat Task Force embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police." Exciting!

We have the majority of the star-studded cast of the first season return for more, as well as some recognisable new faces. They are as follows:
β€’ Hugh Bonneville as Brian Boyce
β€’ Emun Elliott as DI Brightwell
β€’ Charlotte Spencer as DI Jennings

β€’	Tom Cullen as John Palmer
β€’	Stefanie Martini as Marnie Palmer
β€’	Jack Lowden as Kenneth Noye
β€’	Stephen Campbell Moore as Tony Lundy
β€’	Tom Hughes as Logan Campbell
β€’	Sam Spruell as Charlie Miller

As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime. The Brink’s-Mat Task Force embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police."

Meanwhile, the trailer also confirms the previously unannounced return of Jack Lowden as Kenneth Noye, after the character ended up in prison at the end of season 1.

Viewers can expect to see Lowden back in the series from episode 3 onwards

"As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime. The Brink’s-Mat Task Force embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police."

Also returning alongside Bonneville and Lowden are Charlotte Spencer, Emun Elliott, Tom Cullen, Stefanie Martini, Sam Spruell, Peter Davison, Amanda Drew, Silas Carson and James Nelson-Joyce.

Tom Hughes doesn't entirely look like Tom Hughes.

Is there something about his face/jaw that looks different?

Watched the first two episodes on iPlayer and this is not gripping me at all in the same way as series 1. Will stick with it as not much else on at the moment but it is disappointing considering how good the first series was

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/06/2025 05:16

part 2 was rather dull imo but part 3 was excellent

placemats · 15/06/2025 20:09

I'm doing an hour behind tonight because I have to get up early.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/06/2025 22:15

I think I should have made notes to work out what island each one is on and who's following who at any one time!

It's very good.

A thought - the Palmers are real, a real family. How much of it is true? As in did he really have an affair and a baby with her? And how much is fiction? How far should fiction go?

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/06/2025 00:29

Oh wow. That was good. All starting to tie up now

seems amazing that this really happened

it is really good seeing the actor who plays Lundy, who i think i have only known from The History Boys, being such a different character, as well as the one playing Baxter, he is a great character - i have known him from Cheaters, so very different

placemats · 16/06/2025 12:51

Great episode last night. Terrific series.

That’s the thing though, series 1 was fact based which is what made it good. A lot of series 2 is speculation and as it says at the start of each episode β€œinspired by real events” as they don’t know even now what happened to the other half of the gold. It does take away from what was a fantastic series 1

Even the key players that are new for this series are fictionalised albeit based loosely on known criminals that are suspected of being involved

Yes I know what you mean

ilovebrie8 · 16/06/2025 20:10

I’m enjoying it!
Love the music and the old cars …and the old school policing…
I didn’t get the impression that John raped her …

ilovebrie8 · 16/06/2025 20:12

Agree Tom Hughes looks different πŸ€”

I haven’t watched episode 4 yet, watched episode 3 last night. There’s some things I can’t quite follow! Doesn’t stop me understanding the bigger picture but I clearly missed something.

in episode 2 - Why does the London Estuary beer on tap in the β€œLondon Bridge” pub in Tenerife make Lundy realise where Charlie Miller is? I don’t think we saw that apartment he went to before with the bottle of London Estuary? In the recap it says they went back to the doors that didn’t answer, but Jennings and Brightwell went back to Baxter’s door because it had the list of clients named as south London estates. I really don’t get why Lundy went back!

In episode 3 I don’t understand why the Russians hit Jerram on the back of the head if they’d already agreed he’d be the new leader and that John Palmer wasn’t fit to work anymore? Surely Jerram wouldn’t have attempted to drug John Palmer and take over without agreeing it first with Ivan.

Reallt enjoying it, another great spot, thank you @Blondeshavemorefun !

BakeOffRewatch · 17/06/2025 10:13

Another question from episode 3: why does John Palmer add visiting Lena to his private jet work load? Other than bad judgement. Lena made a comment that he only visits to check she’s still there - what does that mean? That she’ll visit John’s wife? Or go to the police about how dodgy his business is? Or to his enemies?
