I've made a compromise with DH - he can watch the footy this afternoon but I'm watching Eurovision afterwards. If I can't watch then he can't either.

I'll get my sparkles out

Have just listened to the UK song, oh dear. Huge autotune use, will be frightening to see if they can hold a tune without it...

I watched semi final 2 where they performed, and they can sing live. I think it’s a bit of a rubbish song and I wasn’t keen on the staging but they can hold a tune.

RM had one vocal ‘near miss’ on Thursday but they’re so experienced that they corrected in within a second or two, and carried on.

I hope they enjoy it. I reckon they will.

They absolutely can.

I've seen them do it I've a couple of times now. It's impressive. They are nailing it

The recorded version is arse but the live version isn't bad at all. Perhaps not my cup of tea but definitely not awful.

I did not expect that.

Just checking in. At a Eurovision party tonight so won't be doing much by way of commenting but will be watching. May the best country win.

Gotta disagree. I love the official video of UK RM: vibe, costumes, no backup dancers. Plus the redheaded lead singer isn't 'conventionally pretty/vacuous' and sounds great to me.

Didn't think it translated well into a live performance though, in the Thursday semi-final. They shoehorned the fallen chandelier in, but it looked like a precarious stage support. Costumes were duller too.

However, hopefully Mumsnet can enjoy the "clutch my pearls" reference? Or even 'but we took you to stately homes?'

Choux · 17/05/2025 12:00

So today is the day! I spent a bit of time yesterday watching the videos of a few countries I couldn’t remember plus the favourites. I now have Ich Komme totally stuck in my head. It’s catchy and visually memorable with the huge mic in the air. I saw the performance from three months ago when she won the country competition and it was also in a huge stadium and the performance choreography was unchanged so she is going to be super slick and prepared. I think it could win the public vote. I don’t know how the juries decide their votes but if they judge the song and performance separately before ranking them, she is going to get high performance marks even if they might be sniffy about the song subject matter.
Compared to Finland, France and Austria looked sleepy and dull. They will probably get more jury marks than Finland but I can see several other countries beating them in the public votes. Sweden is fun and catchy but I am not sure it is going to do as well with the public as the bookies think.
So my prediction is:
1 - Finland
2 - France
3 - Sweden
with Latvia and Armenia (Saliva guy) having top 6 finishes. It won’t be a good night for power ballads except for France.

I hope they don’t muffle any booing. I know it’s not a political show (except when it is!) but it would be valid to let reactions play out.

I don't mind them muffling booing, but playing fake cheers over the top is a step too far for me.

Mmm. I enjoyed 'ich komme', BUT: two questions:

  1. Did anyone hear 'ich komme' as 'disco man' (especially with the phallic microphone styling)?
  2. Why did the sparks emerge from the rear end of the apparatus at the end? If you're going to employ a phallic symbol, surely it's the head of the giant microphone?

RedToothBrush · 17/05/2025 10:12

Also, I would be surprised if the UK got no points. We should get some points from the jury.

If we get nil points from the votes, I will be very confused, given that Israel were voted through and our song is pretty good with amazing voices

JaneJeffer · 17/05/2025 13:53

I love Greece, goosebumps

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 17/05/2025 14:10

Does anybody know how the jury vote performances went yesterday?

I'm torn. I'm not sure Sweden will cinch the win (I think this time last year Croatia were ahead with the bookies) - mind you, with Milkshake Man out and Estonia possibly ranking poorly (it was shit IMO) they only have Roa as direct competition.

I have booked a cancellable apartment in Vienna, but I'm not sure Austria will get it either. It probably would if it blended pop in more so that people could actually sing along.

France you can sing along to, but it's not as relatable as a lovely song.

Finland is too kink I think, but I'm really pleased she'll do well.

Cherrypi · 17/05/2025 14:12

Just off to get my swiss themed desserts. I've thought of swiss roll, chocolate and cheese, any other ideas? I accidentally put I like the Finnish entry in the work group chat when I meant the Finnish Swedes whoops.

I saw on one of my Brit Eurovision groups someone had a toblerone cheesecake. Not sure where it’s from? Maybe Iceland, Aldi or Lidl I would think?

RosaMoline · 17/05/2025 14:40

It’s Tesco’s apparently!

Hi ..

Completely missed thread 2 !

But here now for the big one ...even if it does move to fat for me to follow and comment.

D's mentioned earlier ,, that he thinks that this year has the most singers/groups representing the country who are not actually from that country.

(Hope I phrased that well !)

Any experts on hand ??

I have no favourites as they all went out on Thursday 😕..

So ...what do I know about music ?! 😂😂

BurntBroccoli · 17/05/2025 15:47

Latvia is my favourite. UK is very meh!

placemats · 17/05/2025 15:53

I like Latvia and the UK. Gutted for Ireland, loved that song and performance.

Just checking in.

Not sure what to do about food- although I was planning takeaway Pizza, which fits well with the fact I have a fridge of prosecco and Italy are one of my favourite acts. Grin.

Definitely watching this tonight. The semi finals have all passed me by and I have no idea this year of any of the songs/favs/scandals etc, so relying on reading this thread and getting educated! 😀
Will be fun listening to them all for first time though and we looooovvveee the voting and Graham Norton’s little comments (RIP Terry Wogan)
Found UK entry on YouTube, both video and live performance - its interesting and chaotic and is growing on me! One thing is for sure though, whether you like the actual song or not, those girls can SING! Spot on harmonies
Roll on 8pm

mnahmnah · 17/05/2025 16:51

I’ve gone with a bit of a Greek / Cypriot vibe with food. Hallumi kebabs, Greek salami, cous cous

CrushingOnRubies · 17/05/2025 17:45

Just realised Luxembourg which is a song I really like is in the #2 spot. Which rarely does brilliantly
