Anyone watching? I think it’s brilliant. So funny on Gen x /Gen z differences and how long marriages really are

But the dress was so nice!
Agree with a lot of what others have said

  • Tina fey is a great writer
  • Its a bummer SC got bumped off.
  • I found SC's hackneyed MLC plot believable but the fact he shuffles off stage left before really dealing with any of it, inc realising he wasnt actually the happiest he's been ever.

I found Anne soooooo unlikable. When she started losing the plot with the strawberry figurines I was like "okayyy great. where's this going?" No where good is the answer...
Was amazed to read this “Kerri’s (actress who plays Anne) just perfect in that you just immediately love her,” Fey says.

Do you Tina? DO YOU????

I couldn’t agree more - Anne made SC’s mid life crisis believable because she was so awful. That farm game. The cringy surprise vow renewal when she knew he was unfaithful. Her refusal to,let the new girlfriend be involved in the funeral (redeemed at the end I suppose). I could see her being terribly controlling with the new baby.

In a way that made SC’s character more sympathetic. He didn’t seem to meet the new woman until after the split and was clearly desperate for some joy.

I’m much too highly invested in this. Suffice to say it was nice to see something that examined emotions, life choices ,and what a grind long term relationships can be. And my DH loved it too and we had a proper conversation about the issues it raised. That’s a win.

@mnhqplease can you put a spoiler alert in the title? Thanks!

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 10/05/2025 12:14

Glad someone else agrees!

also agree that Anne (plus SCs generally affability) made the breakdown so much more understandable/empathetic and i had way more sympathy for SC than I wanted to at.
the point when they went skiing i was like "God poor you....all you wnat is nice wine iland some decent skiing and you've been forced into this nonsense"

Violetparis · 10/05/2025 14:04

I was expecting more to be made of Tina Fey's character's daughter who didn't want to spend time with them.

i thought that too. In the scene where they met it seemed to imply that she’d had an issue or falling out with Anne’s daughter. But then it was not followed up at all. The only thing I could think of was that Kate’s daughter was embarrassed about the context of Layla’s play?

DtotheOG · 11/05/2025 01:05

Finally finished this. Absolutely loved it. I called it at the end of Winter Part 1.

user13457798 · 11/05/2025 09:26

I love Tina Fey and SC, am heartily tired of murder, sci fi and dystopia, and generally love character driven comedy/drama, so wanted to love it but just didn't. I found it unoriginal and trite and overacted and a bit lazily written. Other than the reactions to the eco lodge, I didn't think it was funny. I found Anne intensely annoying and they all felt like caricatures more than characters.

@Violetparis and @delightfuldweeb I don't understand why they bothered giving the Tina Fey couple a daughter at all. They pretty much never mentioned her again. If you went to parents' weekend at your DC's uni and they didn't want to spend time with you, wouldn't that at least be a topic of quite a bit of conversation between you? I'd be devastated.

I think I must have seen the original at some point. I do have a soft spot for Alan Alda.

TuesdaysAreBest · 11/05/2025 14:23

The original was a film in 1981. Ham fisted attempts to update the script and make it current just didn’t work , IMO.

The13thFairy · 11/05/2025 19:24

I can't see Frank as a good guy. He let her make her vows! What a sadistic knobhead.

Who’s Frank?

Binged it in one day, absolutely brilliant. Best thing I've watched in a while.

Same!

Who’s Frank?

Oh, sorry, His name was Nick!

PacificState · 12/05/2025 21:44

I really liked it. I don’t think it was trying to be particularly amazing or profound (although it was quite acute about midlife relationships). It was just aiming at a solid, intelligent, well put-together drama-sitcom for people in their 50s. I do love Tina Fey though so I’m prejudiced. I cackled several times each episode.

agree Anne wasn’t very likeable, surprised Fey thought she was! I assumed it had been a deliberate choice to make her a bit irritating and controlling. None of the characters were ‘perfect’ and none were ‘awful’, (mostly) like real life.

Fantina · 12/05/2025 23:30

I thought SC was killed off just before his plot line got interesting. I find him very charismatic so felt it was rubbish after that. It also felt like it didn’t know what genre it was; the immediate reaction to his death was ridiculous.

Empress13 · 13/05/2025 04:07

Loved it ! Was a bit like Friends

DtotheOG · 13/05/2025 10:54

I wonder whether SC only signed up for one series. But it’s got to No 1 so Netflix must be pleased.

shakeneggs · 13/05/2025 10:57

I loved this!! One of the best series I have watched in a while

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 13/05/2025 12:01

I enjoyed it, found it a relaxing, easy and entertaining watch. I always love seeing resorts and different travel places so it was right up my street in that respect.

I liked the dynamic of their friendships, I'm of the same age group, so there's that feeling with long time friends of just rubbing up against each other, and accepting your friends for who they are in the long term.

I've seen three of my male school friends go through a similar mid-life scenario so I thought it was pretty realistic in that sense.

I don't really want to see another season tbh, just enjoyed it for what it was.

Was obsessed with Claude, I loved his character.

youngestisapsycho · 15/05/2025 16:08

Just binged it all today… I really enjoyed. Nice and easy to watch

BashfulClam · 15/05/2025 16:11

We liked it. Husband loves Tina Fey so we end up watching a lot of her stuff like 30 rock, Mean Girls etc

piscofrisco · 15/05/2025 16:34

I liked this well enough. Agree with pp that some of the acting was hammy. The Nick death was a good direction for it to go in I think as it made it more interesting.

SuburbanCrofter · 15/05/2025 18:22

I enjoyed it too, much better than the Sex and the City reboot which obviously tried to appease a younger audience.

I agree, Ann was really annoying, especially for some reason her haircut. And I think we weren't supposed to find Claude a bit annoying? But we all dislike Ann and love Claude 😁

SuburbanCrofter · 15/05/2025 18:22

I mean WERE supposed to find Claude annoying. Gah

Violetparis · 16/05/2025 09:36

I found Claude annoying but seem to be in the minority on this thread. I found it hard to understand him too. Pleased there is going to be another series.

MrsPeterHarris · 16/05/2025 23:37

I found him very annoying too @Violetparis
