Anyone watching? I think it’s brilliant. So funny on Gen x /Gen z differences and how long marriages really are

OP posts:

I enjoyed it. It can’t imagine a second season holding up without Steve Carrell.

agree with the poster who said Tina Fey and Steve Carrell had more chemistry. They were great in “date night” together

Retronight25 · 05/05/2025 21:34

I came on to find a thread and think I must be watching a different series! I'm only on episode 3, but it's absolutely dire, I'm embarrassed for them to have written this! Maybe it improves?

delightfuldweeb · 05/05/2025 22:25

I’ve watched it over the last few days and really enjoyed it. I liked all the characters, but particularly loved Claude.
And the Alan Alda cameo was just perfect!

IPartridge · 06/05/2025 07:44

I enjoyed it but the earlier episodes more so.
Found the repeated arguments of the couples got a bit annoying towards the end.

I would have preferred more humour. Will be interesting to see how it differs from the film. I knew of it but never seen it.

cordelia16 · 06/05/2025 12:18

I binged all episodes in one night. And I started watching because I'm a big Steve Carrell fan. I like him because he generally plays funny and sympathetic/likable characters.

While I enjoyed the show overall, I was disappointed that I absolutely hated SC's character - he was neither funny nor likable/sympathetic. And I'm getting a bit tired of the cliched male midlife crisis storyline. I know this is taking material from the film, but it would have been nice for something different to have played out.

I don't know if spoilers are allowed, so I'll leave it at that for now.

PuppyMonkey · 06/05/2025 12:32

I binged it over the weekend, Best thing in ages. Loved all the characters including SC. Definitely could shape up to be a new Friends for middle aged people. Grin

It is a cliche but it's also such a common occurrence still - the MN relationship board is testament to that - so I think it's still a subject matter that interests people.

I think what happened to the SC character was a bit of a lazy plot twist tbh although I guess that must have been what happened in the film story (not seen it).

The ending felt like a set up for another series but who knows

MrsPeterHarris · 08/05/2025 00:05

I really enjoyed it but completely missed the Alan Alda appearance - which episode / who was he?

Quite near the beginning- he was Anne’s dad at the vow renewal I think.

Same! Truly dire acting and hammy script. The Anne character in particular was terrible.

Also the dress Tina Fey wore at the wedding was $800!!

Rosecoffeecup · 08/05/2025 08:53

Binged it in one day, absolutely brilliant. Best thing I've watched in a while.

PoppyStellar · 08/05/2025 09:13

I loved this too. Stumbled across it and binged the lot. I have a vague recollection of the film from the 80s so off to see if I can find that to watch!

MoistVonL · 08/05/2025 09:27

Loved it! I remember my parents liking the original film. It was so lovely to see Alan Alda in his cameo. He such a charismatic man.

Side note - I thought Tina Fry’s dress for the vow renewal was gorgeous.

The problems in all three relationships were nicely balanced so everyone was a bit of an asshole at some point. (Anne taking the good hotel room in Autumn really tickled me)

AlleyRose · 08/05/2025 09:41

I loved this, watched it all over a couple of days. Then got annoyed with myself for watching too quickly 😂

MrsPeterHarris · 08/05/2025 13:13

Thanks @landryclarke- I missed that altogether!

Bippertyboo2 · 08/05/2025 13:37

Dh and I are currently watching and loving this, I'm especially enjoying Claude. It was great to see Alan Alda although I only recognised him by his voice. I didn't realise there was a film, did it have the same title?

Awful woke remake of a classic.

LobeliaBaggins · 08/05/2025 16:01

I am not enjoying it. And I love Tina Fey. Seems both dull and forced.

Middlemarch123 · 08/05/2025 16:14

Well I thoroughly enjoyed it, thought it very sweet and well acted. But then I have watched a lot of C5 drama lately, so perhaps easily pleased. And Fake on ITVX, utter crap.

Violetparis · 09/05/2025 20:57

I loved this too though I found Claude hard to understand at times, kept having to put the subtitles on. I hope there is another series.

Totally agree

CraftandGlamour · 09/05/2025 23:03

"Definitely could shape up to be a new Friends for middle aged people."

I do hope so @PuppyMonkey ! It's the best thing I've seen on Netflix in a very very long time. Its great to see something about GenX today, (and surprising on Netflix where original programming seems to skewer quite young). It was so well observed, droll and moving. I hope we see more.

EachandEveryone · 09/05/2025 23:23

I don’t think there’s going to be another series. I really enjoyed it. Loved Claude.

MabelStark · 09/05/2025 23:24

I absolutely loved this I watched it on my own and laughed out loud a few times (mostly at Tina Feys lines) and found it really moving in parts. I loved Claude too - a beautiful man.

But the dress was so nice!
Agree with a lot of what others have said

  • Tina fey is a great writer
  • Its a bummer SC got bumped off.
  • I found SC's hackneyed MLC plot believable but the fact he shuffles off stage left before really dealing with any of it, inc realising he wasnt actually the happiest he's been ever.

I found Anne soooooo unlikable. When she started losing the plot with the strawberry figurines I was like "okayyy great. where's this going?" No where good is the answer...
Was amazed to read this “Kerri’s (actress who plays Anne) just perfect in that you just immediately love her,” Fey says.

Do you Tina? DO YOU????
