I quite enjoyed it! I did miss the rest of the cast a bit but I thought it was quite good in its own right Smile

StartingOverIn2025 · 06/02/2025 21:25

I binge watched it all though sorry!

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 06/02/2025 21:50

I've watched one and a half episodes and finding it rather dull, sadly. I screeched with laughter at Motherland, especially the first series, but only smiled a bit at Amandaland.

Honeyroar · 06/02/2025 22:10

I got bored very quickly and turned over.

Jibberjabba · 06/02/2025 22:40

Really wanted to like it have watched a few episodes but it sadly lacks flow, comedy it ain’t , only a handful of lines that made me smile, find the characters jarring and it doesn’t work with the move up to high school. Parents generally don’t have the same kind of involvement together re school and making friendships. Motherland was brilliant the ensemble cast were incredible so it’s a hard act to follow.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 06/02/2025 22:42

I’m only two episodes in, but where are Anne’s two younger children?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 06/02/2025 22:43

Wait, didn’t she have triplets?

fashionqueen0123 · 06/02/2025 22:45

I really liked it!

Same! Hoping they make a new series of Motherland but guessing they won't now Graham Linehans moved to California 😟

Episode 1 “House Party” After moving from Chiswick to So-ha (South Harlesden), Amanda rekindles her friendship with Anne and tries to schmooze a celebrity chef at her kids’ new secondary school. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0025ydz/amandaland-series-1-1-house-party

I thought it was amazing! The greatness is in the one liners and the little moments, which makes it the perfect light midweek 30min watch. I don’t think it would be enjoyable as a binge watch, as you’d miss it all. Lucy Punch is perfect, the emotion in her face when Anne brought up her divorce, shop and mum, she looked like she was about to genuinely cry but then made it silly comedy reaction. And she can do slapstick, the football to the head scene was fab.

Motherland was of its time and parenting stage, and they’ve crammed a few things in here like annoying neighbours charging their electric cars on a London terrace road, taking the plug WiFi out. Felicity having bloody Joy actually saved as “Bloody Joy” on her phone. Her hiding behind the sofa like Julia’s mum Marianne - is that something we’ll all end up doing in 40 years time?

They did the cringe so well too, I felt absolutely repulsed when Fi said the hot tub had no chlorine! “Diploma in homeopathy”, practically anti-Anne.

I think JJ is the Kevin of Amandaland. Della is meant to be the Liz.

I love having Anne back. Her relationship with Darius is as I thought it would be remembering her house with all the cringe photoshoot images mum and son, and her not letting him accept sweets trick or treating.

I’m also going to watch week by week! Don’t want to watch it too fast and ruin it as have been waiting ages! I also thought the hot tub scene was great and how she stuck to the true self and didn’t take the mushrooms, and then had to keep checking on the kids etc but… still lying to Anne!

curiositykilledthiscat · 07/02/2025 17:16

Another thread? There were two already on this.

Ironfloor269 · 09/02/2025 15:43

It’s shit. Couldn’t get through the whole series, dull as ditch water and superbly unfunny. We rewatched Motherland instead.

Flomingho · 09/02/2025 20:20

I was pleasantly surprised at how funny this was. I watched it with low expectations because Motherland would be hard to match and was so impressed I binge watched the series.

Hattieandcake · 11/02/2025 22:06

Where are Anne’s other kids ???

StrikeAlways · 12/02/2025 00:29

I’ve now watched the first two episodes. I didn’t watch the previous series which I think was called something else. I like all the characters and find them amusing, except Amanda. Should I have watched the previous series to ‘get her’?

the80sweregreat · 12/02/2025 06:53

Strike. The previous programme was called ' mother land ' and definitely worth a look
Amanda isn't the main character in it really , it's spread across a bunch of different characters
It is in I player ( I think )

LillyPJ · 13/02/2025 23:20

I thought Motherland was brilliant and Amandaland has been good so far, but not quite up to the same standard. Still, Lucy Punch is fantastic and she brings out the pathos in her situation. I'll enjoy watching the rest of the series.

BakeOffRewatch · 14/02/2025 11:01

Episode 2 “Car Boot” After embracing minimalism, or as she calls it, ‘simpletonism’, Amanda is forced to sell the contents of her lock-up at a car boot sale. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0027mhk/amandaland-series-1-2-car-boot

I haven’t watched it yet. I’ve seen the other two threads, they’re not TV pace and this one is for discussing the episodes.

I watched the first episode again to remind myself of the set up, it really is great with the one liners “like a butterfly from a chrysalis” when Amanda takes off the Dry Robe and “drive by dazzle” when she talks about meeting Anne later.

I think it’s funnier than Motherland. Maybe not as relatable, most of the humour in Motherland was from us recognising the characters’ behaviours in our own lives, Amandaland is funnier by laugh out loud lines.

I watched the 3rd and 4th episodes last night on BBC IPlayer and found them very funny. Much more so than the first 2. Anne in those 2 is hilarious. Maybe the first 2 were ‘setting the scene’.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 14/02/2025 11:26

I trudged through the first few episodes in case it got better, and it did! I found the last two excellent, entertaining and quite thought provoking. Maybe it's partly a matter of tuning into the new situation and characters. Not nearly as funny as Motherland though.

BoeufBourguig · 14/02/2025 13:25

I was prepared to be disappointed but loved it. I definitely miss Kevin but the new cast has grown on me, and I think Mal and JJ's relationship is really nice. I wasn't too keen on the hot tub/mushrooms episode - I think Della's character isn't quite right, but I don't know how. The actress who plays Anne has great comic timing. And I LOVED Johannes 🤣

BakeOffRewatch · 14/02/2025 23:15

Just caught up on this week’s episode. I loved the “good vibes only” neon sign at the end of the episode when she stumbled in the kitchen.

“You’re a big fish in an up and coming pond” I love the way Anne looks at Amanda. There’s this press release of interviews of the cast and creators where Lucy Punch says “Beneath everything, Amanda is probably terribly lonely. She’s been lonely her whole life – lonely as a child, lonely in her marriage, and now in this new world. It’s lovely that she has Anne. I always think the real love story is between Amanda and Anne. Anne is probably the only person who has ever loved Amanda unconditionally.”https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/mediapacks/amandaland I think we really saw that here with the “Just 17 problem page” line and the pep talk.

I feel like Mal is future Amanda, he’s had a divorce a while ago and has a good relationship with his son’s step dad. It was sad how he still saw the objects like the bottle from his proposal and the money box for his honeymoon, I think they’re doing such a good job of emotional moments with comedy.

Can’t believe who Darius was seeing! Wonder how that storyline will go.

Thought the bit about “big cat sanctuary” and “they’re coming for the models now” was hilarious! They’re saving all the silly bits for Felicity.

See you next week for episode 3, airs Wednesday 9pm.
