Has anyone else watched it as confused to why Nathan and Hannah’s other two children weren’t at the wedding ? Or did I miss them ! Or did I imagine them in the previous series’s ! I did skip some of it and may have not been fully concentrating but they didn’t appear to be at their sister’s wedding!

OP posts:
warmbath · 30/12/2024 21:38

All the characters are so ghastly

warmbath · 30/12/2024 21:40

I'm only watching it for the sunshine and nice views

BustyLaRoux · 31/12/2024 09:48

I really quite enjoyed the first episode. Nice to have everyone back. Agree Hannah’s wardrobe was rather meh, but visually the location was stunning and the scenes with Walker and Mangan were enjoyable. I don’t know what happened with the writing, but the second episode was awful! I could barely watch it by the end. The dialogue was so cheesy. So many terrible lines. The storyline predictable and preposterous. I realise there has to be the crisis and resolution narrative. But the mystery woman turning up. Why?? That makes no sense. Then staying for breakfast? And everyone being polite to her. The flurry of lawyers serving papers (as if Valentina wouldn’t have an army of Spanish family lawyers to hand!). The fact Valentina didn’t seem that bothered about the end of her marriage and was over it all fairly quickly once the papers were served. The disappearance of Gael. Did he just sit on a rock all night? The dissolution of his parents’ perfect marriage to make him see that he really loved Liv and didn’t need all the bells and whistles and fancy wedding after all. Cue understated, simple, impromptu beach wedding? Just far too cliched. I thought the last half of the second episode was just embarrassingly bad. I watched to the end but was checking the clock every few minutes to see how long before it would put an end to my suffering!

Was looking for a spoiler thread so I can discuss just how rubbish this sequel was. So disappointed.
As pp said, Gael was Argentinian, so how has he suddenly metamorphosised into a rich Spanish bloke.
Ridiculous storyline with that woman turning up pretending to be Toby's fiancee. What?
Nathan was already terrified by his accidental baby last series, so he had one more at that age? Hated how miserable they made him.
Hated that Rose apparently has no option but to adopt the vicar's passel of kids and then get pregnant by him, so she is even more chained to the vicarage.
Nina suddenly decided to turn lesbian on the spot?
What was even the point of Julian?
And lastly, Hannah's wardrobe was crap.

Julian reminded me far too much of Simon Bird from The Inbetweeners. I fully expected him to give Nina the thumbs up and go "feisty one you are" at some point!

I enjoyed it but I'm not sure I quite buy Hannah as being so irresistible to men. And Nina needs to sort herself out! Though maybe in rejecting Julian's proposal she has started doing that.

Apart from Valentina, the clothes weren't anywhere near as good as in the other seasons. Did they not have as big a wardrobe budget this time?

PuppyMonkey · 31/12/2024 10:24

It also reminded me of that other programme, The Perfect Couple - with Nicole Kidman.

I watched it all in a state of tipsy-ness and quite enjoyed it, load of old nonsense though it was.Grin

As well as the idiocy of British lawyers managing a Spanish divorce in a morning, I wondered whether the British vicar was allowed to officiate at a Spanish wedding in a non-religious location?

NW’s wardrobe so disappointing after previous record.

JSMill · 31/12/2024 10:44

Every aspect of this was disappointing. I actually gave up five minutes from the end.

myfitbitisfucked · 31/12/2024 10:59

I loved the original tv series. This two part “special” was just appalling. Couldn’t even be bothered to watch the second episode until the end it was that bad.

I'm half-convinced NW signed up for The Split because she was fed up of the dreary outfits worn by the characters she usually played! Hannah had some great clothes and bags in the 3 seasons so these 2 episodes were a bit disappointing.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 31/12/2024 11:12

Given how ‘right’ they got it previously, I feel like her wardrobe must have been intended to portray that she feels out of place in the world, post-divorce. Perhaps that’s too deep though, and it was just a change of wardrobe team.😆

Yes! Isnt it difficult for Brits to marry in Spain?

fairytailcat · 31/12/2024 11:14

Not sure the beach wedding was legal

fairytailcat · 31/12/2024 11:15

Performed by the church of england vicar

BestIsWest · 31/12/2024 11:20

I suspended disbelief and refrained from hole picking and really enjoyed it.
I liked her dress for the wedding but it was too long, as was the navy pleated thing, along with being boring.
I would quite like another series.

lillylallylu · 31/12/2024 12:33

it was shit. Badly written, nonsensical
plot, depressing outcome for some
characters.

JSMill · 31/12/2024 13:42

Why was Rose being so horrible to her partner? IIRC she wasn't very nice to her late husband either.

NannyWanny1 · 01/01/2025 13:26

I think they shud not have bothered with sequel. All over acting and storyline was dreadful.
Also I wanted Christy to come wandering along the beach!

It reminded me of The Perfect Couple, too. Think it was the sunshine and the orange and blue colour pallette they used a lot.

The Perfect Couple had a better storyline/plot though (not difficult!).

Codgercockles · 01/01/2025 21:20

Abi Morgan is a cracking scriptwriter, but this had far too many holes in the plot and seemed a bit rushed. Hot Spanish weather is a nightmare for makeup and hair, as hair just goes limp and base slides off your face so I can see why NW wasn't that glammed up. Agree that the divorce legalities were well dodgy, and I can't bear saying it but NW doesn't do it for me at all. The staged "umms" and pauses to sound natural, the screwing up of her face (is she hiding her teeth?). Plus the Gollum stare. Her character was downright nasty to Archie and she seemed to revel in the misfortune of her Spanish hosts. Wish I hadn't bothered.

wildthingsinthenight · 01/01/2025 21:24

I feel sad because I really loved the original series but just didn't enjoy this.
I was so looking forward to it too
I didn't warm to Archie which just made everything "wrong"

candlerhyme · 01/01/2025 21:44

This was so bad. Ridiculous plot. I feel sorry for the actors who did their best.

GrandHighPoohbah · 01/01/2025 21:45

Hannah's dressing gown was the highlight for me!

Christmasbear1 · 04/01/2025 01:54

It was soo boring. Bring back Christie!

Re NW, I always enjoy the shows she's in, but it's rarely because she's in them, if that makes sense. The unnatural pauses in sentences really winds me up.

I thought her dress for the wedding was a terrible choice. She was mother of the bride, fgs.

FridayNight1975 · 04/01/2025 03:08

Gael’s parents didn’t have the strong Argentinian accent he does.

the actor playing the dad is catalan, the mum is from Argentina, although she sounded quite Spanish with a trace of argentinian accent (at least to me, i’m Spanish)

she mentions at the beginning that the house brings her memories of Gael visiting when he was little so i thought maybe they lived in Argentina and visited this estate belonging to her family during summer holidays.
