A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. Day 10 of the Twelve days of Alt-Oppas and we have another actor who's had a triumphant year (I see a theme!). He impressed with his very physical appearances in two gritty shows The 8 Show and Light Shop, but he's scrubbed up well for us today. it's Bae Seong-woo!

Another alt-oppa I'm not familiar with FedUp, I guess I'm not really into "gritty". I prefer a bit of nonsense, I think, as I'm also on ep3 of WTPR but am enjoying all the implausible silliness.

Sam Cobol, had to keep searching for something I had maybe seen him in. But as I tend towards the light end of the scale in viewing maybe you are right. Mind you he is edging towards more age appropriate for me!

I have neglected this thread for few days but just been able to catch up with the alt-oppas while eating some left over Christmas pudding. 👏👏👏 to FedUp for the excellent choices

The only thing I’ve seen Bae Seong-Woo in is Live and he was excellent in that as the main character police trainees’ mentor/supervising officer. His character is a bit of a bastard whose marriage is breaking down, causing a mid life crisis. He’s very charismatic in it and gives a compelling performance. That was the first time I came across Jung Yu Mi, as she’s the FL. It’s worth a watch - good insights about the intricacies of policing in SK. Police officers are not protected from being directly sued from an accident or injury they cause in the line of duty, which makes them more hesitant to intervene in the show.

I’m barely 10 mins into When Stars Gossip and it’s bam bam bam star after star. This is a cracking cast. Lee Min Ho’s the bummest note so far.

We watched episode 1 of When the Stars Gossip this evening. Hmm….not sure what to make of it, though I found it strangely compelling. Hated the vomiting scenes though which were gratuitous.

DH watched When Stars Gossip with me. He said he was genuinely sad there weren’t any more episodes because he was enjoying it. 😮 This never happens!

I don't I've ever laughed out loud more watching ANYTHING. But also genuinely enjoyed it at the level it was meant to be enjoyed at, too. It was glorious. Totally OTT. And YYS was just fabulous. I can't think of any other actor who could have pulled that combination of stuffy / intense / vulnerable / smouldering / unintentionally hilarious off. New gold standard as far as I'm concerned 🤩😁
