A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

On the matter of kdrama characters being brought up in an orphanage, the negative social impact of not having family must still run pretty deep even today.

boatyardblues · 30/12/2024 10:43

Perhaps baddie met his match in Do Jae. (For clarity, at a first, early encounter.)

Day 5 of the Twelve Days of Alt-Oppas and we have the usually cute Kim Nam-gil looking "fiery" as hell in this pic.

Great photo FedUp! I likey.

Dragonrock · 30/12/2024 11:13

FedUp, oh yes, now he is a fine fine actor, his charisma jumps from the screen. Migs, yes the stigma is there and is also linked to family registers, which are pretty restrictive. In China, there is the Hukou and that determines where you can live, if you can access education, social services etc. So it causes huge issues for those children, not only the trauma of losing birth parents but being raised in an institution, or as many are now with foster families, and then just being left without the framework in a very rules driven society. It's a theme in so many K dramas.

AmVa · 30/12/2024 11:16

@MigsandTiggs I assume this is about WTPR which I haven't started yet so was skimming the thread but... Yes apparently there is still huge stigma about this. Was reading about it when I was watching No Gain No Love earlier this year in regards to the second couple. Don't know if you watched it so will be vague but basically the man in the couple even being willing to he with the woman knowing what her last was like would possibly have read as a huge act of love in K (as opposed to him looking like he finally pulled his head in to someone not from that culture)

Omg I LOVE Kim Nam Gil 😍🔥

Yes, and those who were adopted abroad have had great difficulty in tracing their biological parents. Apparently this is partly because records were sparse and sometimes falsified and also there are so few surnames in Korea which makes it harder.
However, maybe now that gene tracing (not sure of correct term) is so popular, adoptees may find it easier.

mrsfeatherbottom · 29/12/2024 19:26

Good work, @peanutcookie !

Don't read on if anyone isn't up to date ...

So, how did DoJae and the baddie start working together. Did he know DoJae was from the orphanage ...?

Did I understand right that fake Saeon is actually the grandfather's illegitimate son and the dad isn't actually his son at all ...? And he was given to the random fisherman to raise as a back up ...?

And surely, if they knew he was still on the loose and hellbent on destroying them, they should have some security or something. It all seemed very lax.

They haven't explained how DoJae and baddie met up yet, I thought DoJae knew who he was and that was the reason for choosing him so was confused why he would work with his brother's killer. But as it turns out, he didn't know until it was explained to him. Perhaps there is some secret tinder type app to hook like minded criminals up.

I did not think that fake Saeon could have been mad grandpa's real son and that power hungry dad was the real fake - I like this theory as it also explains why he was being raised in a shack by fishing guy. Was this alluded to? I was tired when watching so may not have taken in all the details

peanutcookie · 30/12/2024 17:29

DH and I have started Welcome to Samdal-Ri which we are quite enjoying, about 4 episodes in so far. I have the last episode of 100 days my prince left. I haven't particularly enjoyed it tbh. ML seems so stiff

Rowdythree · 30/12/2024 17:32

But did you like the hot assassin Peanut?

Cobol · 30/12/2024 18:02

OMO! Don't diss D.O. peanutcookie. He does the best indignant "o - ho" of any pop idol turned actor in a sageuk drama (admittedly a niche category) and, to be fair, the character is supposed to be pretty uptight, that's why we also get Kim Jae-young as the assassin brother for the 🔥 factor. His sword fight scenes are epic.

Dragonrock · 30/12/2024 20:08

Guess what? Got one of the teens to watch the last 3 episodes of WTPR! Wooho, she quite likes the thriller element of it. Unlike her mother she can deal with the scary bits!

boatyardblues · 30/12/2024 20:17

Poor Jung Yu Mi! That dress they’ve put her in for the photoshoot in Love Your Enemy ep 12 is foul. It looks like something the Queen Mother or Dame Barbara Cartland might have worn to a posh tea party. You were robbed! They should have put you in a much prettier frock. Do we think she rubbed the costume designer up the wrong way on a previous shoot?

Bravo! You’ll make a kdrama addict of her yet.

I love that Squid Game unites my family & is a kdrama that the others want to watch. I think they should have aired the remaining 3 episodes as part of this season. Netflix’s decision to delay them til next year is contemptible.

@FedUpWithBriiiiick great choice, thank you! Fabulous actor, smashes the straight roles as well as character roles. Personally I'd love to see him as ML, but I guess it's never going to happen in a 'standard' drama.
