Anyone starting this today? All 6 episodes released today.
It's with Keira Knightley, Ben Wishaw and Sarah Lancashire - spy thriller.

I've started the first episode but had to stop and may go back to it tomorrow.

I thought it was passable, but a bit shit. Was expecting something higher quality, but found it a bit slapstick in parts. I didn't like Sarah Lancashire in it, whereas I normally love everything she is in. Like someone up thread said, I find Keira Knightly ruins everything she is in (she seems a lovely woman when I've seen her interviewed). I thought Ben Whishaw was very good. I wouldn't recommend it. Very much enjoying The Jackal - much better quality.

Heh! I just watched the first ep, and I thought much the same. I suspect it may not be half as clever as it thinks it is, and, as so often, there were plenty of conversations that no humans would have had ever. But obviously, I'll stick with it and see how it goes.

WaystarRoy · 13/12/2024 10:05

I enjoyed it. I thought KK good at the action scenes and more likeable than usual. Loved BW as always. Assassin girls were a delight. Glad there is going to be S2.

Was BW’s first hit killing his own father?

CurrentHun · 13/12/2024 14:50

Yes, his own father.

the80sweregreat · 13/12/2024 17:36

Those two assassins were so good !
They should make a programme about them

Newgirls · 13/12/2024 21:08

So is the nanny another black dove? Or SLs daughter? Both?

does husband suspect that KK is maybe mi5? He’s got to wonder what’s she up to

loved it thought it was great!

BESTAUNTB · 13/12/2024 21:40

I’d totally be interested in a spin off featuring Williams and Elinor.

TheBunyip · 13/12/2024 21:50

CurrentHun · 13/12/2024 14:50

Yes, his own father.

Was this ever explained? If it was I missed it.

CurrentHun · 13/12/2024 21:54

Yes - they came back to it in a later ep. IIRC Ben Whishaw explains he knew he was right for the trigger man job, because he could do it that time to kill his own father.

That cropped up in the first episode, didn't it? (I'm only on ep #2)

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/12/2024 08:02

I thought they under used Omari Douglas as Sam's ex boyfriend He was just a bit of a mopey wet blanket.

Lennie was a great character, such a delight to have an actor of Kathryn Hunter's calibre. She lit up every scene she was in.

I really loved it!! Please let them make a series 2-
Keira being torn between jobs but always being badass
tha matriarchs
the MP’s career
Sam and his magnet
the hit girls
Kai
the true life of Mrs Reed?
Hector and Sam
Dani
glimpses inside Westminster, US embassy
Loads to cover!.it was always beautifully shot and super watchable. I didn’t predict a single one of the plot twists.
I loved seeing London in it but also couldn’t work out where Keira’s house is meant to be. (And why the nanny wasn’t live in, surely you would need that?)

I loved it also but couldn't figure out who the blonde girl was with Mrs Reed on Xmas day at the very end. Was it the nanny?

MistletoeRegrets · 14/12/2024 11:03

I’ve hesitated to say it but I did really love the upending of the TV trope of the aggressive and intimidating Black Man. (Yes, I’m allowed to say that.) Michael was so hilariously weedy.

Actually - his characterisation did live up to the originality of Joe Barton’s writing on Giri / Haji, where I definitely saw characters and situations that were worth getting to know.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/12/2024 11:09

I didn't mind him being wimpy but the character just sort of hung around like a kicked puppy, Douglas was so luminous in It's A Sin I thought better use could have been made of him.

paranoidnamechanger · 14/12/2024 11:16

I think Omari Douglas is a bit overused these days and he didn’t have much chemistry with BW, so I’m happy he was barely in it.

MistletoeRegrets · 14/12/2024 11:16

Well … I guess if you’d been through what Sam put him through, you’d be a bit chastened - for ever!

But yes, I’d be glad to see him in S2, perhaps with a bigger role.

blobby10 · 14/12/2024 11:22

I finished it whilst off work ill yesterday - like most of you (it seems) I wasn't looking forward to KK but she surprised me by minimising the weird gurning thing she does with her lower jaw. Not sure I like it as much as Slow Horses and definitely not sure I would watch a second series but it was good in a funny sort of way!! Grin

ThisOldThang · 14/12/2024 19:06

Meh.

The series doesn't seem to know if it's a comedy or a thriller. At times it seems that it's a Guy Ritchie mockney comedy. The hit girls play it for laughs, but Keira Nightley plays it completely straight.

Keira Knightley keeps doing that annoying cutsie nose scrunching thing, which is highly irritating.

All the cockney characters are annoying, hammed up crap.

3/10.

trivialMorning · 14/12/2024 19:41

It was alright kept me watching and interested though did need complete suspension of any belief.

Didn't think they did the Sam - triggerman - and Daisy/Helen minster wife back story well. I was willing to accept they were really close and had each other's backs as that how they acted but the flashback/years before explaining it made me think it didn't make any sense.

I prefer The Jackal which also needed suspension of any belief as that seemed to know it's tone a bit more consistently.

Feministwoman · 14/12/2024 21:03

Was the young woman on Mrs Reed's sofa at the end, the Nanny? So is she a Black Dove, also?

Yes - though I had to look up who she was.

Apparently she will feature in series 2 - which TBH while I found it okay to watch not sure I'm excited by another series prospect.

  1. How did Helen explain to Wallace that some man working in insurance was unexpectedly coming for Christmas Dinner?

Well he wasn’t bothered by the fact she had been out all Christmas Eve, presumably he played Santa & got everything sorted without so much as a text to her.

  1. Who thought it a good idea that BW’s hairdo would get bigger and bigger til his head looked like one of those wobbly head figures with a massive head and tiny body?
😆😆😆

I thought BW was good, KK didn’t convince me as a hard women & she didn’t have much time to actually become a spy/learn espionage which was very far fetched. I also don’t understand why Sam is so nice to her or why Wallace puts up with her running off.

Radishknot · 15/12/2024 07:50

KK had done the murder and shifted blame to her step-sister. KK murdered the step father.

London looked beautiful but empty!

But does anyone’s think that Keira Knightley looks like Catherine , princess of Wales? I am not much of a royal watcher, but I keep glimpsing her!!

Facially they look nothing alike…

Radishknot · 15/12/2024 07:54

"3 How did blonde Trigger Girl suddenly miraculously recover from gunshot wound?"

Because she patched it up with a sanitary towel & she’s well ard.

smoking was banned in pubs ams restaurants in 2007

Gangsters can break the rules.

I thought opposite. I thought she was actually very good in the fights making the punches look hard hitting etc. BW on the other hand as highly trained John Wick wanna be? Come on. He was great in the non-action scenes but when he was supposed to be in expert killer
mode - nahhh

Jennyathemall · 15/12/2024 15:54

I see no one has picked up the main plot
hole that that the entire plot revolves around the Defense secretary’s wife running around killing, flighting, breaking into the US Embassy (literally one of the most secure buildings on earth).. where was the paparazzi? The daily mail? If a senior cabinet minister in the conservative party had a wife that looked like her the paparazzi and press would never leave them alone!
