Anyone watching?

The premise; A mysterious delivery threatens to expose a celebrated journalist’s past. Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline star in a series written for the screen and directed by Alfonso Cuarón.

It’s utterly compelling. And I reached the end of ep 1 before realising the husband is played by Sasha Baron Cohen.

Watched two episodes. Very good. Classy cast. For some reason took me a while to recognise both Sacha Baron Cohen and Kevin Kline.

JemimaTab · 12/10/2024 03:21

I'm two episodes in and I'm struggling TBH. Finding the acting a bit hammy all round. Sacha Baron Cohen's character is not credible IMO. It is a bit stylised and maybe that's what I find difficult. Will keep going though and see if I come round.

KillingMeDeftIy · 12/10/2024 07:51

I think the cast elevates it from what it is but I'm mainly watching as it was filmed down the road from me and I saw Cate Blanchett taking a break between takes one day!!

PuppyMonkey · 12/10/2024 07:53

Is it all on there now or are they dropping one episode a week? I’ll wait if so, I can only watch things in a binge way now. Grin

westisbest1982 · 12/10/2024 08:27

What a fabulous cast in this show, which I’m starting tonight.

@PuppyMonkey The first two episodes have dropped and the remaining five will be all on there on November 15th.

Two this week. Two more on the 18th October according to the tv planner? Not sure if they are then dropping more in Nov?

@KillingMeDeftIy how exciting! Lovely road you live on.

Sorry, grammar fail earlier. I meant the remaining five episodes will be on there by November 15th:

Not quite my road but just a few streets away and it's Kevin K's character's house rather than Cate's much more luxe pad!

Incidentally, did anyone else find it funny that her character had downsized but the house was still enormous? Where did they live before? Buckingham Palace?!?

Ahh makes more sense! I actually quite like looking forward to weekly eps. We mostly watch Apple TV as a family which is quite quaint these days 😂

Yep. Those piles of books would do my head in on that landing. And that bloody cat… even more needy than a dog 😂

That stove though. They are an absolute fortune. No idea why they paired it with kitchen stools that look like they are straight out of Dunelm Mills (and I love a bit of Dunelm but they didn’t quite seem the right choice for that kitchen aesthetic).

OP posts:
KillingMeDeftIy · 12/10/2024 10:07

Also I thought her house looked incredibly cold. No wonder they've got an expensive stove because in that kitchen they'd probably freeze in winter without it!

I knew SBC was in it but only because I looked up the cast beforehand. When I saw the trailer I didnt recognise him. I'm just not used to him in straight dramatic roles.

KillingMeDeftIy · 12/10/2024 10:09

Random cast note: Leila George who plays young Catherine is the daughter of Greta Scacchi. And was once married to Sean Penn. Who is the same age as Greta Scacchi!

westisbest1982 · 12/10/2024 17:59

First episode was enjoyable, although I was distracted by Sacha Baron Cohen wearing a wig and a pretty crap one at that. Was there something wrong with his own hair?

I note on IMDb that there was filming in Blackpool - looking forward to seeing how that location fits into this story!

mizu · 13/10/2024 20:06

Just finished 2nd episode and am desperate for the next one now. Love the cast - and the cat Grin but what didn't sit right with me was the son and his living where he does now.

MrsPeterHarris · 13/10/2024 23:15

I've just watched episode 1 & am a bit lost! Will stick with it as the cast is strong & the reviews are great but really struggling so far!

It's the 'Italian beach scene' obvs 🤣

JemimaTab · 16/10/2024 16:30

I've now caught up with the second episode and am getting into it a bit more.
Some of the acting is not that great IMO, though. SBC for one, also Kevin Kline. They are not really working for me. I think SBC overdid the soppy adoring husband bit in the previous episode, which made his sudden about-turn (even in the circs) quite hard to swallow. And I'm finding the voiceover / narration a bit irritating. But there are aspects I find quite interesting, so I will keep with it for now and see where it goes.
Was quite entertaining watching the cat repeatedly jump up on the counter for food, it wasn't taking no for an answer.
(Was also quite amusing to see actual London fishmonger Rex Goldsmith in a cameo apparently playing himself).

westisbest1982 · 17/10/2024 21:33

I finally caught up with the second episode and - wow - Tony and Oscar winner Kevin Kline is so bad. SBC isn’t much better…maybe he too was distracted by the shit wig he’s wearing.

IjustbelieveinMe · 18/10/2024 11:55

I thought this started off quite good but I'm not really liking it now.

JemimaTab · 18/10/2024 17:32

All the characters are pretty awful, without being that interesting, which makes it difficult to care IMO. (Though I'd like to see more of the son, his story could have potential). And it takes itself SO seriously.
I'll give tonight's episode a go, but I might drop out if it doesn't buck up.

mizu · 18/10/2024 20:51

I've watched the next 2 but tbh I didn't enjoy them very much.

westisbest1982 · 19/10/2024 07:40

The stylised approach makes me feel distanced from the characters, as well as the almost constant and annoying music score.

I usually love to watch Cate Blanchett, but she is doing a lot of ACTING in this.

KillingMeDeftIy · 19/10/2024 21:55

That scene in the hotel bar was excruciating. Just so uncomfortable as Jonathan was so young.

Lesley Manville's portrayal of the mother's grief was heartbreaking though.

Tomorrowisyesterday · 19/10/2024 22:38

How do we even know that the seduction scene happened that way? Was it in the book the mum wrote? I wonder if the woman viewed it the same way? I thought his actions with his first girlfriend were so different to how he was in this scene.
Though I'm finding a lot of this quite confusing!

KillingMeDeftIy · 19/10/2024 22:45

Yes, that's true. He was very confident with his girlfriend but with Catherine he suddenly doesn't know what he's doing?
