Just binge-watched S3. What a ride!

Anyone else had a look yet?

Im only on series 2 is there a thread for series 1 without spoilers? Im not sure I can work out Harper? Whats everyone else’s thoughts? Only on episode 1 of season 2.

BlanklyMyDear · 10/10/2024 10:51

Can’t remember if there was a thread.

What do you need explaining?

LittleMsSunny · 10/10/2024 11:31

Nothing explaining just thoughts, why is Harper so Horrible? Or is she meant to be seen as hard done by? But Yasmin had it much worse?

Yasmin is also horrible to the interns in the first episode of season two, why she knows what its like?

BigSkies2022 · 10/10/2024 12:55

I think the bank doesn't really reward kindness and leg-ups! I remember Yasmin being irritated by the new grad being clear that she wasn't going to fetch coffee and lunches for the desk - the kind of sensible demarcation of roles that the careers' blogs advise - and rebuking her on the grounds that 'we've all done our time' sort of thing.

Harper can be 'explained', maybe, by her abusive mother and addict brother, and having to step up and be responsible for them both. So she's in flight from her family, from the US, and finding relief in the ability to make money and engineer deals and forge career success. But there is a possibility - raised by several characters, including herself - that there is something actually wrong with her, she's got some kind of personality disorder, that she is a psychopath. She's amoral and very clever but I think she is genuinely nonplussed, hurt and enraged at times when the people around her are willing to benefit from her edge for the duration of a deal, but pull away from her once the transaction is done.

I loved how it ended I think all arcs felt genuine
Almost feels tarnished by the announcements of a 4th - like the idea of a full new cast and setting

I actually think she has some kind of disorder - she has no loyalty whatsoever. We see some moments of kindness but on the whole she's out for herself. Fascinating though.

I've found this thread on series 1:

Anyone watching this. What a total load of shite! Cliched, cringy and just utter crap. It looked good from the trailer!

I've finished Series 3 and loved it so much. I feel they are moving towards filling a "Succession" tv void with different generations and wealthy families etc.

PaperbackWrighter · 10/10/2024 19:25

Yes, I agree. I think her conversation with Viscount Norton was what clinched it, especially the hug. She looked as if she was realising what it might feel like to have a proper father for the first time in her life.

PaperbackWrighter · 10/10/2024 19:28

Netaporter · 04/10/2024 03:55

Ooh good spot. Very Shiv.

Spoiler alert:

For me, some very unexpected moments. Nicole in Ep 1, Diana in Ep 8 😱

The opening scene of S3 was supposed to show an erect penis on UK tv for the first time but was cut out for some unknown reason. It was Charles Hanani’s knob we were supposed to see (and was shown in the US). Quite glad we are British sometimes 😂

Yeah I'm glad we didn't get to see that. Was bad enough seeing the pregnant young woman sitting on his face! That disturbed me enough!

BlanklyMyDear · 10/10/2024 19:29

Oh, I didn’t feel that at all, @PaperbackWrighter! To me it seemed she saw the full extent of the hole she was in and the price she would have to pay to be free of her father’s scandal. Take on Henry and you’ll be one of us. You’ll be protected.

PaperbackWrighter · 10/10/2024 19:33

JSMill · 06/10/2024 17:20

Yasmin tied herself to Henry because she needed the protection of his family because of the mess her father had left behind.

Yes, I agree. I think her conversation with Viscount Norton was what clinched it, especially the hug. She looked as if she was realising what it might feel like to have a proper father for the first time in her life. (But then he is not a good man either and his motives weren't entirely for her good.)

PaperbackWrighter · 11/10/2024 14:39

I felt the Diana death was too much and shouted as much at the screen - did anyone else agree? Also, her new haircut completely changed her appearance and I spent a good bit of that scene before she was shot trying to work out if it was Diana or a new model!

PaperbackWrighter · 11/10/2024 14:42

I saw some of that in there too @BlanklyMyDear, but I also felt that she responded to his warmth towards her too, the safety of a father figure/family figurehead and being part of a stable family, and of course taking Henry on was the price she has to pay to get in on that. I also wondered why his 4 daughters didn't seem to be at his birthday dinner!

BlanklyMyDear · 11/10/2024 14:44

Diana’s death was awful. As if the blameless death of a woman is merely something that happened to the man.

KillingMeDeftIy · 11/10/2024 15:00

Eric continues to simultaneously be the worst and the best character. Ken Leung is just incredible. And did anyone see his real name in the first episode? Alvin AmERICa Tao!

Yasmin came so close to redemption yet... but I guess with a father like that, she never stood a chance. What happened to her mother? I remember she made an appearance in series 1 and then?

Yes I did! Ds was in the kitchen and came running in to see what was wrong!

Karmaisagod · 11/10/2024 19:13

Did anyone else think the scratch card was part of what clinched it for Yasmin? I think she knew at that point that she loves Rob, but she'll never be able to settle for that kind of mundane life.

Karmaisagod · 11/10/2024 19:14

@BigSkies2022 , great summing up of Harper.

The scratchcard, the woman with the screaming kids.

Yep. Hot on the heels of broken kettle, middling hotel, and kind but unattractive receptionist. Too much normality.

I did wonder what was the point of the scratchcard. It's good to have this thread to discuss it as I have missed some little details like that.

Exactly! I'd forgotten about the woman and kids.

BlanklyMyDear · 11/10/2024 19:20

Which is strange because Robert must be earning shedloads of dosh. (The scratchcard seemed a strange pastime, I mean.)

And didn’t he say his former boss left him half a million pounds in his will? (Forgotten his name.) To most people Robert’s life is … extraordinary.

He would be a catch - to anyone else but her.

KillingMeDeftIy · 11/10/2024 19:21

But Rob is very ambitious and going places - would life with him really be mundane? I couldn't see them ending up like the couple with the screaming kids. He's dodged a bullet though! I really hope his character can stay free of her.
