I was just reading back through the first thread. There were a few comments that suggested Matt would do well. Also comments along the lines of not liking Roisin yellow or florals.

Theedgeoftheabyss · 30/04/2024 21:56

What a traversy.

SoupDragon · 30/04/2024 21:57

I honestly am surprised by all the love for Matts final design, I have loved him all the way through but I think last week and this showed he has reached his limits and I don't think he has the eye for all the finished details yet in the way Roisin does.

Roisin's was absolutely hideous though!

I think there were flaws with both designs. Matt's fell short of the computer graphic of his design at the start and Roisin needed to just stop. It was far too much.

Soukmyfalafel · 30/04/2024 21:58

As usual Michelle chooses the least popular design in the final (Although I did prefer Monica's last year).

I did think Matts living area was boring. The kitchen area needed colour and a patter of some sort. I would have papered the pelmet over with some grand wallpaper or similar.

I like his bedrooms. Hallway was too dark. You could have got the same grand effect with cream or white.

Roisin's was an almighty headache for me. Not relaxing or uplifting for me. I quite liked her use of colour and florals in the series and she was a lovely contestant, but the two spaces in the living area were hugely disconnected. I wouldn't book to stay there as that would annoy me. I did like the yellow though.

One of the bedrooms was nice, the other looked like a grannies knicker drawer.

I think Matt will still do well. He is a very thoughtful designer. I can see Roisin designing accessories and soft furnishings in the future. I'm about to order something from La Redoute weirdly enough. First time in ages.

My DH reaction when all the contestants walked in wearing their interesting outfits was very funny.

Ellmau · 30/04/2024 22:01

Roisin slightly overdid the colours as usual but on the whole I'd be happy staying there. Matt's was so dark and I would find it depressing to sleep in that bedroom.

But I think Matt will have a career.

Matt was robbed. It was the guest judge that swayed it I think. He really loved it.

That guest judge was very annoying. He talks utter bollocks sometimes.

If I was staying in one of the lodges, I'd want it calm and relaxing. Roisin's was neither. It was absolutely horrible imo.

Agreed.

So uncomfortable and no sophistication.

Gutted for Matt, he should have won

Like an uncomfortable small sofa is quite a big factor and I can't believe no one commented on the ugly dark wires from his two little lamps right in the middle of the lounge space.
I don't think there was anything wow there from him it was all just nice in a posh hotel way but I'm not sure you'd stay there with a family.
I have no doubt he will be outstanding with more experience.

I did struggle to like Roisin's designs because I don't think it's not really innovative, you could recreate almost every look she's done at Dunelm (or any mainstream home shop) and that's because it's already an on trend look, bobbly mirrors- check, scalloped edges check, bright deep colour- check, velvet, botanicals ....

I think a real challenge would have been for them both to design something that's entirely not their signature look so R doing minimalist, because surely when you work with clients it's not always just doing your own style.

This was the essence of the original show. Get brief from client, present ideas, get kicked in the balls by the client, go back to the drawing board, adapt and do something they didn’t personally like but the client did. Was a much better show.

I see they're advertising roisins new range already.
And guess what? It's floral.

Yuck.

I prefer the sophistication of Matt by a mile

WingingItSince1973 · 30/04/2024 22:05

I noticed the wires for the table lamps under matts tv. He does pay attention to detail usually so was surprised at this. Though maybe he just didn't have the time.

WingingItSince1973 · 30/04/2024 22:07

Roisins lodge in as major sensory overload for me. The wallpaper walls and ceilings made me feel itchy. I think would have looked better painting the ceilings in a colour from the wallpaper maybe. Even thinking about it makes me feel weird 😂

LordSnot · 30/04/2024 22:07

We really need a new judge. It couldn't have been clearer that Matt was the better designer but she consistently makes dodgy decisions. It cheapens the competition.

WingingItSince1973 · 30/04/2024 22:09

Just read over on instagram that the wallpaper was all Sophie Robinson design and Sophie's brother works on the show. Maybe not really important.

It’s so subjective, I personally think matt was not the better designer by far.

I loathe Sophie Robinsons interiors, now I recognise why I dislike Roisin's designs too.

WingingItSince1973 · 30/04/2024 22:27

Just had a look at her collection on La Redoute and wondering what Matts style would have been. Maybe she was picked because her style is more marketable. How would matts style translate into soft furnishings etc? Just a thought x

Soukmyfalafel · 30/04/2024 22:29

I hope if they do another IDM they don't pick contestants who just choose a shape or pattern and say its their signature (circles, florals, scallops, waves). I think it was all a bit samey and the downfall of some of the designers. A signature style is surely a group of things brought together that creates a feeling (sounds wanky I know), not just drawing a shape on a wall.

I felt the only true designers were Matt and Anthony, as they thought about structure and function as well as what things looked like visually. The only thing I would say about Matt is he wasn't always great at choosing the right proportioned furniture for the space.

Cocolapew · 30/04/2024 22:31

I forgot it was on!
I've caught up and loved Roisins, but I do love clashing floral prints.
I would have happy for either of them to win.

MichaelAndEagle · 30/04/2024 22:49

I've just caught up too. Also loved Roisin's. I thought matt would win up until the reveal of the finished lodge to be honest because Michelle isn't a colour and pattern fan.
But Roisin's was way better IMO. It worked better as a design. I will admit I love loud and colourful.
I think Matts looked a bit too much like a normal upmarket Lodge and I'm sure he'll get work designing these sorts of spaces.

OutOfTheHouse · 30/04/2024 22:53

The thing is that Roisin picked already existing wallpapers and curtains. That is a world away from being able to design it.

Washingupdone · 30/04/2024 22:57

I would much prefer to stay in Matt’s calm lodge, Roisin’s was far too busy for me to have a calm restful stay away from home.

SabrinaThwaite · 30/04/2024 23:08

grannies knicker drawer

Oh yes!

LadyEloise1 · 01/05/2024 00:22

SabrinaThwaite · 30/04/2024 20:58

I think Matt will do well off the back of this.

He’s very commercially aware.

I agree but I think Roisin will appeal to the sponsors of the prize - Homewares at La Redoute.
She has a very specific style.

Ellmau · 01/05/2024 00:36

I can only imagine what Ben would have done with Blenheim as an inspiration.
