Motherland

So apparently there isn’t going to be any further seasons of Motherland which ties in with the BBCs decision to cut costs. I get cutting costs but for the love of god cut the shite programmes such as the One Show and they would be able to make more episodes of something that was worth watching.

Alex Jones is bloody awful so save the licence payers money on programmes which are actually worth the fee!

It’s okay because you’ll still be able to watch quality shows like Drag Race

PaulGalico1 · 29/03/2024 22:39

I love Motherland and have watched all the episodes more than once (much more than once). However I am not sure a new series would be a good idea. I'm also not sure about the proposed Amanda spin-off.

Craftyy · 29/03/2024 22:49

I don't think a new series is a good idea anyway. I think it's better to end a series while it's still good, rather than risk it just dragging on and outstaying it's welcome.

HesterPrincess · 29/03/2024 22:52

I agree about the One Show and can never understand how it's still being broadcast, it's THAT bad.

But Motherland would be ruined by doing more, it ended when it should have done.

OooScotland · 29/03/2024 22:52

I thought they ended it well, with the husband being home and everyone walking away through the school gates. It was good, but would not be improved by being dragged out for another series or more. That’s what spoils most American shows, imo.

TotalDramarama24 · 29/03/2024 23:38

I loved Motherland but to be honest thought they were pushing it with the last series and wouldn't want another one. I found a couple of episodes quite a hard watch in the last series.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 29/03/2024 23:57

the final Christmas special spoilt it for me - totally shocked by what happened to Marion. And the scenes after it were ridiculously unrealistic. Yes I know it is all pretend but really, this was imo a misjudged and unsuitable story line.
loved it other than that (all previous episodes and the first half of the last episode)

I just pretend I didn’t see that Christmas special - it was awful I agree

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 30/03/2024 01:05

The Christmas episode was not good. It only confirmed that they ended the show itself on a high note. The last series was a little bit bumpy.
I do think Motherland is one of the best sitcoms to have come along in a long while. Like Fawlty Towers, less is more.

Chocolatelover13 · 30/03/2024 15:50

I would still rather watch more episodes than a lot of the other programmes on BBC. they must have been able to come up with new storylines

I respectfully disagree. The whole premise was done in the first few episodes for me, Mother has time management issues, a useless husband who provides well so he’s forgiven, friends who are cold at first but turn out to be the sisterhood we all wish we had, and there’s a slightly creepy man in the mums social group. They did a lot more with that than I expected but I went right off it when they brought in the BC storyline. Sorry, but cancer in comedy shows doesn’t work for me.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would given all that and think they’ve done well to end it before it got completely stale - I didn’t mean that to come off so snarky! I’m genuinely sorry you will miss it so much, OP.

Don’t worry, I don’t have an issue with people disagreeing with me!

Yeah agree with this. Poor Marian- fancy the writers doing that, especially in the Christmas episode.
I was sad.

Love LOVE Motherland and I have seen all three series multiple times. It’s my go to programme when my anxiety is high and I need to calm down and relax.

Cattyisbatty · 31/03/2024 09:24

Motherland is amazing, but agree it’s probably run its course.
Totally agree with the One Show and Alex Jones. Can’t bear her.
And for the love of god, Mrs Browns Boys, just why?
There’s such lowest common denominator TV on these days.

spidermonkeys · 31/03/2024 10:26

Motherland is brilliant but they would ruin it if they did another series. The Xmas special was awful.

AgnesNaismith · 31/03/2024 10:30

Urgh, The One Show is the most soul-destroying awful show on tv of all time. Who is it even made for??

Going against popular opinion here but I’d love a new series, with older children brings different challenges which could easily be satirised.

Musomama1 · 31/03/2024 10:38

Love Motherland, would have loved it if they could keep turning out series after series of great writing - thinking of shows like Peepshow or the I.T. Crowd - although they are few and far between.

But if the quality dipped - which is what often happens - then I'd rather they kept it at 3 series.

theothercatpurred · 31/03/2024 10:43

I'm surprised as I thought it already ended. I loved it.

Am I alone in liking the Christmas episode? I thought it poignant.

It will be a crying shame if they don't spend money on new comedy to replace it.

Horses7 · 31/03/2024 10:53

Love Motherland - but the swimming pool changing room scene brought back my worst nightmare 🤣

LizzieSiddal · 31/03/2024 10:58

Motherland is brilliant and written by an all woman team. The BBC are meant to be all about diversity. I do wonder why they got rid of a comedy written by women with all woman being the main characters but kept something like Mrs Browns Boys and the
awful drag race stuff. They obviously don’t care about women.

I hope another channel picks it up and makes the BBC look very stupid.

PaulGalico1 · 31/03/2024 11:03

@theothercatpurred - I also loved the Christmas episode.

Highfivemum · 31/03/2024 11:06

As much as I loved the show I do think it has run its course. The Dc will all be at high school and so no more school gate dramas and everything that a primary school brings. Every now and then I watch a rerun it helps me think I am not the only one who encountered the Amanda’s at the gate

westisbest1982 · 31/03/2024 11:09

It’s unlikely to do with money because the show is popular and the BBC always find money for crap. Maybe everyone involved are so busy with other projects so it’s logistically almost impossible to get another series off the ground.

I agree with this. The show was literally based around the primary school gate. It just wouldn’t work beyond that.

OiGetOff · 31/03/2024 11:29

I liked Motherland, but yeah maybe that’s enough now.

It’s possibly like Ghosts, where the creators decided to end it rather than it being axed? Dunno.
