So apparently there isn’t going to be any further seasons of Motherland which ties in with the BBCs decision to cut costs. I get cutting costs but for the love of god cut the shite programmes such as the One Show and they would be able to make more episodes of something that was worth watching.

Alex Jones is bloody awful so save the licence payers money on programmes which are actually worth the fee!

I really enjoyed Motherland, but would agree that it's run it's course.
Things like The One Show are cheap TV. Although the main character of Julia looks like she's been dressed from the discount bin of a charity shop, apparently it was an expensive show to stage.

Chocolatelover13 · 31/03/2024 12:15

Mrs Browns Boys, now that is up there with The One Show as being absolutely shite. Not in the least bit funny.

Well, you're saying that, but it gets a big audience. Bigger than Motherland. Tastes differ!

Doesn't stop it being shite.

Not my point!

Loopytiles · 31/03/2024 14:49

I really liked the christmas special too!

Willmafrockfit · 01/04/2024 09:06

Marion was such a major character,

As much as I loved the show I do think it has run its course. The Dc will all be at high school and so no more school gate dramas and everything that a primary school brings. Every now and then I watch a rerun it helps me think I am not the only one who encountered the Amanda’s at the gate

This is what I think. Once the children head off to secondary school it just doesn't work.

EarringsandLipstick · 01/04/2024 09:14

I agree that Motherland has run its course. There's a limit to the storylines, and the characters risk becoming cliches, if they continue.

I liked S3, there were elements of subtlety & character development (Kevin, Amanda, Kevin & Amanda!) and I think the last Christmas special is amazing. Really touching.

theothercatpurred · 31/03/2024 10:43

I'm surprised as I thought it already ended. I loved it.

Am I alone in liking the Christmas episode? I thought it poignant.

It will be a crying shame if they don't spend money on new comedy to replace it.

Nope, I enjoyed the Christmas episode too.

I love anything remotely Christmas-themed and I loved the Amanda's mother thread very moving.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 19/04/2024 09:32

im just watching Mandy on iplayer which has Diane Morgan from Motherland in it (Liz) , it’s very funny and definitely worth a watch , she’s a brilliant actress

HullaBallu · 19/04/2024 09:40

Probably the right decision - Outnumbered felt slightly off once the children were teens. Although if they'd started as teens maybe it would have been fine?

BakeOffRewatch · 24/08/2024 18:45

Saw this on another thread - there’s going to be an Amandaland this autumn! I can’t wait! Have run to the most recent Motherland thread I can find to spread the news https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/article/2024/aug/24/rivals-to-slow-horses-gavin-and-stacey-the-must-see-tv-for-autumn-2024

Omg!!!!!

So happy about this!

BakeOffRewatch · 24/08/2024 19:03

It’s wierd I can’t find a hint of it on IMDB where you can usually find a cast list whilst it’s in production https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0700577/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t2

They’ve kept a very tight lid on it!

BakeOffRewatch · 24/08/2024 19:08

There was some press release in May. Warning spoilers on the type of storylines there will be. I just really want to know if Kevin and Liz will return. A good hearty 6 episodes too.

I can't wait!

I think one of my favourite bits in the whole of Motherland is when Anne reveals what her job is to Amanda. Beautifully done.

Phillipa Dunne is brilliant as Anne, I'm glad it looks like she's in the new series.

Purplturpl · 24/08/2024 19:24

Yes! Also loved it when Anne dropped in to conversation what her job had been. And she did it so casually and not with any hint of trying to impress

BashfulClam · 24/08/2024 19:27

I’d love to see the Kevin and Amanda storyline develop. Trying to be cloak and dagger but everyone knows. Plus one kid at high school and one still at primary could bring its own chaos.

BESTAUNTB · 24/08/2024 19:43

The casting of Joanna as her mum was inspired.

So good to see Philippa Dunne returning as well. She was barely in the Christmas episode.

Motherland went out on a high. It was the right time. They were all brilliant in it. I found the Christmas episode poignant too.

MonkeyTennis34 · 25/08/2024 07:39

Very exciting news!!

I loved Motherland so feel embarrassed asking....what job did Anne do??

Edingril · 25/08/2024 07:42

I loved it because there was not millions of them some shows go on too long and get spoilt

BakeOffRewatch · 25/08/2024 08:02

“I never worked at Greggs, I was head of product development at GlaxoSmithKline worldwide,”

Don’t worry @MonkeyTennis34 there's loads of little throwaway lines, usually muttered, like that that I pick up each time I watch! Plus most of us watched it through a sleep deprived baby rearing haze.

MonkeyTennis34 · 25/08/2024 08:07

Thanks @BakeOffRewatch
Unfortunately, I don't have that excuse as my DCs were tweens and teens during the Motherland years!

That was a killer line.

My favourite bits, as well as the many many hilarious bits, were when Anne stood up to Amanda and when Amanda stood up to her toxic Mum...I cried!

Want to watch Motherland again 😂

BakeOffRewatch · 25/08/2024 08:09

Ah that was the clip that came up when I searched for Anne’s exact words when she has a go at Amanda on her birthday. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=503584661095143&vanity=bbccomedy

Watching it with tweens and teens in background sounds more distracting!
