On episode 3 and enjoying it so far. Maybe a bit slow but I feel like it’s building up big time. Not 100% sure what’s going on. Waiting for the aliens to turn up.

Oooh! Just started last night. I've been waiting for this since it was announced (not because I know anything about the books but because I really admire the showrunners).

First impressions: the pilot is very slow and the characters are not yet jumping out at me. Although I have high hopes for Benny Wong's character. Haven't got any further but I will stick with it.

CormorantStrikesBack · 22/03/2024 17:14

I like the real world stuff….not so sure about the computer game world stuff.

Dd read the books and said it was great so I started watching it yesterday. Looks good so far (only on episode 1)

quirkychick · 22/03/2024 17:32

I've just finished episode 2. I really like the flashbacks to 1960s China. Weirdly, I had just been talking to dd1 about the book Wild Swans and Struggle Sessions and lo and behold that was the beginning.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/03/2024 17:56

I haven't started watching it yet, and I'm not sure if I will. I read the first book but didn't read the rest of them, I wasn't gripped enough to keep going. It'll be interesting to see what the aliens look like, I have an image in my mind and I suspect that it won't be at all the same as whatever they do on the screen.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2024 19:43

I've finished episode 2 and absolutely loving it. I couldn't watch the first scene - too violent for me, but other than that Im gripped.

LadyBird1973 · 22/03/2024 20:33

Just finished episode 1 - I'm gripped. Will binge watch over the weekend probably.

HaggisHhahaha · 22/03/2024 20:38

Watched first episode tonight based solely on one dc at uni studying physics and another about to after the summer

looks good

im not going to binge as I want to have a good think about what might be happening in between each episode as physics is waaaay over my head

a few scenes already quite brutal

Lovewine1975 · 22/03/2024 21:48

Glad there's a thread, watched the first episode honestly don't really understand what's going on but really enjoyed it, think it will be very good definitely gets you thinking

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2024 23:04

The physics is rather dodgy so far, but it's still a good watch.

Mothership4two · 23/03/2024 01:49

Is that on Netflix?

I have the books but haven't read them yet. Probably best to watch first?

quirkychick · 23/03/2024 13:27

I haven't read the books, but I'm enjoying the show. I'm on episode 3 and I like how it's starting to come together. The flashbacks to 60s China, the Virtual Reality game and the present day. The reviews were mixed, but so far I think the strands are intertwined well.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/03/2024 13:30

Is this the new game of thrones people show ?

quirkychick · 23/03/2024 15:20

@LaurieFairyCake yes, it is. Kind of presented as a mystery, a bit like GOT Season 1.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/03/2024 16:02

Fab thanks 🙏

Trisolaris · 23/03/2024 16:06

I have been so excited for this so I can finally share my love for this book with DH!

We watched the first two last night and am excited for the rest. I think they’ve adapted it well.

Trisolaris · 23/03/2024 16:08

BTW this has been my mumsnet name for a long time now so not just changed it for this thread 😆

That’s so funny. Was it a name due to liking the books??

@CormorantStrikesBack
Yup, I got properly obsessed with them during lockdown and read them over and over. No one else I knew had read them so I couldn’t talk about them with anyone!

SlowlyLurking · 23/03/2024 16:17

I've not long finished it. I really hope it's green lighted for season 2 because it has so much potential.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 23/03/2024 20:47

Just finished this. A lot of new characters and different deviations from the source but I thought it was very well done and faithful enough to the book.

quirkychick · 24/03/2024 16:38

I've just finished today. I have really enjoyed it, but had no preconceptions as I don't know the books. I did wonder if we are supposed to see a parallel between the aliens with their black and white thinking and no compromise with lying and Communist China if the 60s.

Rollergirl11 · 24/03/2024 23:03

Have watched 2 episodes and enjoying so far. Like the communist China timeline the most.

I also loved these books and had no one to talk to about them irl.

Haven't watched the Netflix yet - hope they live up to expectations. Would be great for them to do the whole trilogy.

Me too, read all the books and no one else to talk to about them! Loved the books, so so new for me.

I'm on episode 3 of the Netflix version, but have also started watching the 30 episode Chinese version - 2 episodes in and it's very addictive, much much more detail than Netflix's and no "Oxford 5" to make the plot more accessible to the audience Hmm
