That was one of the best episodes I have ever seen. Outstanding performance. I am RAGING for Yolande and those other women!

VioletCharlotte · 17/04/2024 21:20

Do people irl really drink alcohol like people in EE?? Linda and her supply cup, but also Patrick, Elaine, George... any upset or inconvenience, they seem to reach straight for the bottle.

Bunionbabe · 17/04/2024 22:26

Isn't it a bit soon after the Linda rape story to have another woman being sexually abused? And another one-shag pregnancy incident? The Whitbrit story is stretching credulity. Surely the school would want to know about previous school records, proof of address etc. Whit is being really stupid, even for her.

Isn't it 10 years since Linda got raped?! The recent storyline has been about how that stays with you.

I agree with @Upwiththisiwillnotput Tonight's episode genuinely blew me away. DH got home and I verbally exploded my feelings about it on him. Poor guy! He doesn't even watch Eastenders 😁

JMSA · 18/04/2024 00:10

Tonight's episode was extremely well done by everyone, but I have to admit that I preferred Elaine's more understated acting.

BusterGroove · 18/04/2024 00:26

There was also Ben’s rape more recently than Linda’s.

Gingerkittykat · 18/04/2024 00:26

Sadly too many woman don't say anything and try to forget but that's not the right thing to do - but I can understand why they feel like that

The right thing to do is to get through that experience the best and safest you can. The conviction rate for rape is less than 2% so it is effectively legal meaning men like Dean and the pastor can get away with it.

I found the episode harrowing, possibly because of my own past experiences, there definitely should have been some kind of proper trigger warning on there.

I did love Elaine's acting and the fact she made a strong statement about how no man has the right to touch a woman without her consent.

lazymum99 · 18/04/2024 08:49

You can see why there are so few convictions. Most of the previous assaults by the pastor were not reported to the police and who knows if there is still a record of the ones that were. It would be incredibly difficult to prove this one.
I was astounded that those close to Yolanda, Denise etc, didn’t realise something was seriously wrong at the fund raiser thingy.

SparklyBracelet · 18/04/2024 09:26

Can I stick my head over the parapet and say I thought the actress who plays Yolande over acted. As PPs have said Elaine’s understated performance was much more believable. Poor Yolande tho. I thought young Denzil was likely to have chinned the pastor a few weeks ago.
As for the Whitbrit storyline; utterly ridiculous. Whitney would be so happy with her setup with a baby on the way and her relationship with Zak. She wouldn’t have done such a ludicrous thing

the80sweregreat · 18/04/2024 09:30

Whitney would need some kind of ID to register Britney! I admit I can't remember what you need to have or take or what it's like now , but surely she'd need something?
She has the 'head in the clouds ' syndrome where that girl is concerned

Southeastdweller · 18/04/2024 09:32

I thought Angela Wynter brilliantly conveyed the shock and devastation of Yolande's assault. Harriet Thorpe was great, but it's like comparing apples and oranges - it wasn't Elaine who was violated.

Riverlee · 18/04/2024 09:33

@lazymum99 I thought the same. Surely someone would have noticed she went from bright and bubbly to crushed looking.

the80sweregreat · 18/04/2024 09:35

Always the way after any kind of assault on the square , the person isn't right or acting strangely , yet nobody notices or cares !
( i know E did , but she wasn't in the hall afterwards )
Linda hid her turmoil for a long time and so did Ben for a while.
Denise was with nasty Lucas for years and knows all about it too , she would definitely understand
Yet Y probably won't tell anyone else

I agree
She was brilliant, the utter shock and disbelief that this had happened, the questioning of self etc

Soukmyfalafel · 18/04/2024 10:11

It was a good episide last night. Interesting how it is a trusted religious figure who is abusing and he targets older ladies. That has never been done before as far as I know, but it has probably happened. I felt sad for the victims.

Even though I think it is an important issue to raise, there is far too much abuse in this programme now. My partner feels like EE is making a lot of men out to be abusive predators that treat women appallingly (I suppose there are a fair number of men who do) and like they don't really want men to watch it. He was in a coercive relationship with a jealous woman and doesnt feel it is represented. I haven't seen that on EE for a long time. It can't be a nice experience for people who are victims too if it is so constant. I have been a victim of DA by another partner years ago and I am getting a bit weary of it now too.

the80sweregreat · 18/04/2024 10:36

You normally think of priests and pastors etc with child abuse ( I know that is a really horrible thing to write, but enough true life cases around historically to know it's sadly true and I've read a few books that hi light these sad cases)
You don't think of elder abuse , although that goes on too in different forms but maybe not in this way.
With someone like Dr shipman he just killed them ( for one example)
It's a dark storyline all round and must have happened. Maybe just never really flagged up enough by the victims because they know it won't go anywhere.
( hope I haven't triggered anyone writing that )
They have covered a grooming story with Whitney before. That was a hard watch as well.

Absolutely! My memory is hazy about the documentation, too, but I'm pretty sure birth certificate and proof of address is needed.

the80sweregreat · 18/04/2024 12:38

This will trip Whitney up I think.
The school might even get suspicious or send the SS round maybe?
(That's if she has tried to register her of course , I'm not sure what she has done about it!)

Yes registering mini blondes 2yrs ago needed births certificate. Proof of address so a hospital letter /child Benefit form and id/proof of address that match hers

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 18/04/2024 13:59

Gosh, Whitney won't have any of that then 😂
Maybe proof of address, but not the other things.
Plus fostering a child must be different too maybe ? Must be more paperwork involved

Aquarius1234 · 18/04/2024 14:11

I think the actress playing Yolande was just being Yolande. She has always been quite loud and OTT.

murasaki · 18/04/2024 14:52

I agree re Yolande, she's always been a big character. Elaine was good on what she'd learned from the Linda situation.

I thought it was the strongest episode in ages. I was almost getting tearful as more and more flashbacks happened. Well acted all round I thought.

The Jay and Lucy bits jarred a bit, it could have done with being just the fundraiser and aftermath, but there we go.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/04/2024 16:00

Jay and honey are actually running the marathon for real

So they will somehow slip in real live shots into the episode in prob 30 second slots

Like the mention World Cup football or the king etx

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 18/04/2024 16:18

Who was the lady who used to run the mini mart ? I always thought that was Yolande , but not sure who it was!?
She was around when Honey worked there once.
