Anyone interested in the build up this year? I have been more aware this year as the songs are announced. I like Croatia, Ireland and Finland. Dizzy is hopefully going to do well which makes it exciting - Olli Alexander should be good performing live and he is well known in Europe.

Just reading about the controversy with Israel’s entry and I see that Iceland might send a Palastinian singer.

Ukraine have been the favourites for a while but Croatia is just ahead of them now.

Is it the TikTok clips? I have seen a few flash up on Facebook. Exciting - not long now.

Where can we see rehearsal footage?

KaarijasBowlCut · 30/04/2024 05:52

Yes, I've been watching the clips, reading descriptions of the staging etc. It sounds as if some songs will go up/down in people's estimations once they've seen the likely whole setup. Very, very interested to see some of the Netherlands staging later today.

KaarijasBowlCut · 30/04/2024 05:58

There are rehearsal clips on the official Eurovision tiktok account, but I'm accessing them via the Eurovision subreddit instead. The official Eurovision Instagram account is also posting photo galleries which are on their site too, Eurovision.tv

Hi! Just listening to Dizzy. Takes me back a bit to club scenes of the 1980s and 90s. Which is not necessarily unwelcome 🙂 Rather silly review of it in the Guardian btw.

I wonder if the inclusion of Israel will end up overshadowing the whole event this year.

I hope it does.

Boycott.

They don't want to spoil it and apparently Joost is upset that the EBU have released clips of the rehearsals.

I've heard that they are doing 'something big' and 'never before done at Eurovision'.

I have a wild guess about what it's going to be: there's a clip of him performing the song live on his YouTube. In the clip he goes into the crowd and they circled around him. He also stage dives.

This would fit with everything being said, plus he's mad enough to do it. It also means they can't really do a lot of rehearsals prior to the first semi final performance because there is no crowd.

Now consider he has been put last in the semi order by the producers - if he does go into the crowd, chaos WILL ensure and that won't make for great turn around on the stage timings if he's earlier in the show.

You'd have to be nuts to do that. By all accounts he is that nuts.

I have Dutch friends who know him and have 'expressed some concerns' about how he will handle the pressures of Eurovision.

I am also sensing a concerted effort to get as much hype for him as possible ahead of the show too. By all accounts he has been hanging out with the guy from last year's Finnish entry for the last couple of weeks. Rumours have included that Käärijä is going to perform with Joost. I think this is bollocks though Käärijä has been in Malmö so probably will be doing a performance during the interval.

I'm totally speculating here but I wouldn't be entirely surprised at a no show or a walk out by the Dutch for this rehearsal today or some other drama to add to the hype too.

I AM expecting some sort of chaos following Joost around for the next two weeks though.

So yeah. I'm intrigued and watching with curiosity how it will go this afternoon.

RedToothBrush · 30/04/2024 09:28

So far looking at the clips I think Armenia and Moldova are going to outperform their promise - I am expecting them to do better than their songs suggest they should.

Switzerland are looking good. As are Austria.

There a couple who need to step their game up though. Australia look like they may have an short European trip.

Douzepoints · 30/04/2024 09:50

My favourite time of the year!

I thought long and hard about going to Malmo but decided against it. Kind of regret it now.

I agree that Armenia are going to do very well and will be a "surprise" top 5 placing - quite possibly 3rd.

Right now, it seems that there are obvious favourites but everything can change with the staging. I used to try to stay away from the rehearsal clips but curioristy has gotten the better of me in recent years and I'm all over it now.

It's really interesting how the contest is influenced by popular songs from the previous year but, in this case the influence is all from Kaarija and Gustaph rther than emulating Loreen. So many 90s beats and kooky guys but, IMO, it all feels rather contrived whereas Kaarija was genuine and authentic.

Theres several copies of Israel's 'Unicorn' this year too. Unicorn was a track that took from other female singer with dance troops that had gone before, but Unicorn was different because it was a bit start stop, with bits that didn't quite fit together seamlessly. This years ones do the same thing, less well.

I think this is probably my gripe with Croatia's entry tbh. It feels contrived. The fact that the video even has the milk maid and theres a woman in a milkmaidesque costume for the live performance makes it feel off. Its funny when you first see it but yes, it all a bit ChatGPT Eurovision / Will Ferrell Parody vibe for me. Finland's entry is a less good version of that too. Finland is liable to bomb in the public vote as a result.

This is why I think the Dutch entry works best for me as the 'mad' entry. He is authentically bonkers rather than faked. And the song is different for Eurovision. Its very Dutch 1990s too and is unashamed of that. I fear its at massive risk of overhype though.

Gustaph was the entry I though really exceeded my expectations last year. The live performance and staging was absoluetely fantastic. Its a track I still like to listen to. As you say I think theres a few that have gone down that route. Overall there's a real dance / party vibe this year and the big single female ballad is 'out' in terms of Eurovision fashion. The Moldovian entry is likely to really benefit from that. The staging looks really good for it too. Ukraine and Armenia should do well too because they are 'different' to that party vibe and won't get lost in the crowd. The biggest winner to that is definitely the Italian act. Its got that latino sound thats done well in recent years but not quite won (yet).

This years Belguim entry I really like again and is one of my favs, but its got a running order issue. If it draws the first half of the draw it may struggle. It needs to be late in the show and to do well on the semi televote for aid its cause with the producers. The photos that have just come out look good - yet to see a video snippet (On that note, the Dutch entry needs to avoid one of the six 'first half of the draw' slots but should get a favourable position if it does that).

This year seems to have several revolving stages / circular props (though sadly I haven't spied a hamster well yet) - so I kinda hope that Olly Alexander doesn't do the same as Saturday Night Takeaway as its going to be a bit of a cliche. Trouble is with a song called Dizzy its going to be a hard temptation to resist. The song is actually one of the better ones - its not a vintage year imho - and he has a proven track record as an amazing live performer so I think he possibly will do better than I initially feared. If the staging is ok, he has the ability to pull us up the rankings but its not a top 5 song.

Think the Swiss entry will be hard to beat. Staging looks half decent on first impression and his voice seems great. Unless he has a bit of a 'mare and bottles it, he should be top 3. I think its probably going to be between Italy and Switzerland in the end. Croatia won the fan vote for the winner, but my feeling is the live performance is underwhelming and doesn't have the power and charisma of Käärijä to go with it. And Joost will possibly implode at the expense of the vocals and he really needs those jury votes not the televotes and its hard to see how he will manage that. (I'm hoping I'm wrong on this).

I note the changes in the betting since rehearsals began. The Irish entry has shot up in popularity (it was looking like it was unlikely to qualify for the final. Thats no longer the case). Croatia's odds are lengthing and though it remains second fav overall, the Netherlands is now second fav with a couple of the bookies - will be interesting to see how that pans out later (their rehearsal is about 4.30pm Swedish time).

In terms of copying from previous years being the trend this year - wtf were Germany thinking? Null Points.

@RedToothBrush I totally agree with all of your thoughts - it's like we share a euro-brain!

I should have mentioned Unicorn/Noa also - I did spend about 45 minutes last night bending the ear of a less-than-interested DH about how dance breaks (especially at the end of a track) are really important this year because of Noa's performance.

I do think it is likely to be between Italy and Switzerland, despite current voting. I suspect Switzerland will take it based on Nemo's vocal acrobatics which will appeal to both jury and public voters - that's if he can pull it off on the live stage, of course.

I'd go out on a limb to say that the top five are likely to be Switzerland, Italy, Ukraine, Armenia and Netherlands but the order could go either way and you also can't discount Moldova and maybe Croatia, although I agree it is more likely to implode on the night.

Olly should get a decent placing on the left side of the board but it worries me that the general UK public and media will see anything less than 2nd place as a failure and evidence that the UK can send out biggest and best stars and yet nobody will vote for us because they all hate us, which will probably result in less investment in the song and artist next year. His song is good but quite generic and I fear it will get lost a bit - he's a good performer though so hope that he can pull off something memorable on the night. I know he said from the beginning that he was going for a disco-banger but I really wish he'd gone for a simple, pared down ballad - similar to his It's a Sin cover where he can really show off his vulnerability in vocals and performance. I think that would have had more impact.

Does anyone here listen to the Mysteries of the Euroverse podcast? It's brilliant and although I was put off a bit by the fact it's USA-based (how much can they really understand the context and European psyche that makes Eurovision what it is?) I have to say I'm really impressed by the love and knowledge that the hosts have for the contest and in recent episodes where they have been reviewing and predicting outcomes for this year's entries, I think they are absolutely nailing it. I won't spoil by saying who has come out as their winner in case anyone is listening and a behind.

RedToothBrush · 30/04/2024 15:06

I'm going to use this thread as a bit of a spoiler thread tbh now. Will try and keep that to a minimum on the official semi and final threads next week.

Will post a thread early Monday for Semi 1.

RedToothBrush · 30/04/2024 16:44

Twitter awash with comments about how Joost is trolling and the visuals are not really the visuals and that it doesn't show the ending.

It does show that Sesame Street has a rival though.

Caught a few rehearsal clips. Glad to see Armenia getting some love. Still struggling with Croatia although I don't loathe it as much. Ditto Ireland. Two of my usual Eurovision companions (not coming this year) will see them for the first time in the semis and I know they will hate them on a first viewing. I wonder if the "ugly" bits (especially for Ireland) will outweigh the hooks. I bloody hate NL but I can see the appeal I suppose.

I'm sticking with a top 2 of Italy and Switzerland.

It might be my age but I really don't like the heavier/rock entries and I will never ever forgive Måneskin for beating Voilà.

I'll shut up for now.

Have you checked everything fits in your large cabin bag?

This is my current dilemma.

I am good at packing light generally but Eurovision is fucking with this ability.

So many essential ridiculous items of clothing to pack and the weather isn't looking great ATM.

RedToothBrush · 30/04/2024 19:44

Do I absolutely need my leather trousers AND my abba costume? And my stupid coat? Best take a waterproof. Bollocks I probably need shoes in addition to my ridiculous boots.

I'm going to look an absolute state in the airport at 5am Monday!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 30/04/2024 20:27

Ha ha!

Fortunately my coat of many pockets (TM) is properly waterproof and light.

I'm very good at travelling light although the sequinned dress will probably take up much of the weight - it's the opposite of a stealth dress, you can hear me rattling at 100 paces!

Having seen the rubbish forecast, I'll be in boots the whole w/e I think. Will be layering up between the afternoon show and the evening show but Saturday night in the Eurovision Village is going to be a bit of a trial I fear (not least because I've got a touch of sciatica and they've rather unreasonably banned these stools, the bastards). We've been really lucky with the weather over the years so I guess our luck had to run out at some point.

If either of you bump into Ollie in Malmö before Friday 10th, it is your duty to Britain and to Mumsnet to remind him of the golden rule: Take The Rehearsal Show Seriously.

All too many UK entrants have forgotten that it carries half the marks (looking at you Blue).

I haven't started listening yet: for me Eurovision starts with the release of the Popbitch roundup at the end of this week.

Did anyone go to the jury show in Liverpool? Do we know how Mae Muller performed that night?

We were at the jury show in Turin and Sam Ryder's performance was spine-tingling. He so deserved to come out on top that night but the Ukraine win was always a given and actually I think a cracking song and performance.

Sakura7 · 01/05/2024 15:23

Hello!

Irish fan here, it's so nice to finally feel proud and excited about our entry. The photos from Bambie's rehearsal today look amazing.

Croatia and Switzerland are my two favourites so if either wins I'll be very happy. Also loving Lithuania, Ukraine, Norway and (massively underrated) Latvia. It's such a strong year.

I'm a big fan of Olly, I just wish his song was a little bit stronger. It's good, and I'm sure it will get a respectable placing, but it feels like it's missing something. Let's see what the rehearsal tomorrow brings.

Dh has been whistling Olly's 'Dizzy 'number !
I wished he didn't .. 😂
I do love OA though and I hope he does well
Not heard any other songs , who is good this year ?

RunningAndSinging · 01/05/2024 17:36

@the80sweregreat there is lots of chat about the songs on this thread but my tactics are to look at the odds and get to know the top 10 or so songs. 37 feels a bit much. BBC sounds has all the songs each with a bit of an intro from different radio presenters. The favourite - Switzerland, Nemo with The Code is growing on me. I also like Croatia, Italy, Ireland, Belgium, Lithuania and Finland.

DH keeps singing anything and everything to the tune. Just nonsense words.

Its VERY annoying.

the80sweregreat · 01/05/2024 18:54

lol! I sometimes do this with songs too ..
I also keep thinking of ' dizzy' by Vic reeves and the wonder stuff too .. totally different songs altogether

Sandytoxic · 01/05/2024 19:05

I'm very much in lurv with Switzerland. i.e Nemo, and The Code. I may have said before: every year there's one that sounds like a Bond theme tune. The Code goes one further, and gives us a whole Bond movie condensed into 3 minutes.

I love:

  • the musical genres included from rap, to opera, to millenial whooping
  • Nemo's stage presence and performance
  • their vocal dexterity reminiscent of Mika or even Freddie Mercury
  • the story arc, building across a start, middle and finish
  • the tutus!

My also rans are Croatia (Rim Tim Tigi Dim has nonsense lyrics, a cat, and a stupid dance) and Italy (La Noia is brilliantly sung, but I haven't a clue what it's about)
