Anyone been on a quiz show?

Has anyone been on a TV quiz show? I’ve been accepted to appear on one later this year. I was just wondering
1- how long after filming does it generally take to air
2- did you get paid soon after filming if you were a winner?
3- what was your experience like?

Giving this a bump, as I'm interested to know more about getting on quiz shows generally. Any top tips for being selected?

EasterMummie · 17/03/2024 21:12

If you like Podcasts there was an episode of The Rest is Entertainment, co-hosted by Richard Osman which explored this very topic, i'll see if I can link the episode.

He had some tips for getting selected, and kinda went into a little bit of what to expect. It was really interesting even though i've no intention of applying for anything myself! He has said a couple of times on the podcast that they really look after the contestants so you have a great day. Although he said if you are playing for one of the big money ones its obviously a stressful situation for contestants, but you get looked after.

Re getting selected he said you need to have something interesting about yourself, eg your job, hobby, etc. And in the audition don't get every question right, or wrong.

I'm probably not doing his advice justice though so listen to the podcast!

Good luck and come back and tell us your experience

I've been on a few. I won 4k on The Chase and the money comes through after 6 weeks. Filmed in May 2019 and it aired in March 2020 but this varies massively as they don't show them in the order they were shot, they space out the wins. I had a great experience, and Bradley is an absolute dream :-) any other questions just ask x

Awesome! Ive applied to the chase several times, but only got as far as a phone interview! It's my lifetime ambition to be on it 😁

EasterMummie · 17/03/2024 21:29

Oh wow thats interesting Moonface. Was the Chase your favourite one you were on?

Sorry JayJay I looked for the podcast episode but can't remember the exact one it was, but it wasn't that long ago.
Its the one where he says if you are a firefighter you are definitely getting on, or if you are in your 90s you'll get picked too 😂

Miloandfreddy · 17/03/2024 21:29

My brother was on mastermind. He's really clever but he did terribly, the pressure got to him I think.

Moonface31 · 17/03/2024 21:30

I applied in January the previous year so it was over 2 years from initial application to when the show aired. Had an in-person audition in the August and got told I'd been shortlisted then, but with no guarantees of getting on the show. I know they get a lot of applicants, but don't give up! It's worth it :-)

NoddyfromToytown · 17/03/2024 21:30
  1. Mastermind
  2. shown 3 months after filming
  3. Not paid
EasterMummie · 17/03/2024 21:31

Oh and he said sometimes the runner up gets a small monetary prize that doesn't get mentioned either, as a way of ensuring people don't spill the beans on who the winner is before the show airs. Although I got the impression this is rare and most people are good enough sports not to want to spoil the show for viewers.

Medee · 17/03/2024 22:05

Thanks @EasterMummie , I’ll look that up.

Medee · 17/03/2024 22:06

Congrats @Moonface31 !

Medee · 17/03/2024 22:07

What city are they usually filmed in?

Moonface31 · 17/03/2024 22:13

@Medee The Chase was London. Mastermind in Belfast and Only Connect in Cardiff x

Ask The Family 1979 Champions.

I was on Fifteen To One many years ago. I came second. William G's suit looked really expensive. No money involved, of course.

Really? Well done!

I was also on The Chase but we were dreadful and won nothing 😆Not helped by being up against The Beast!!

Fun experience though but I actually ended up out of pocket as the travel to Teddington wasn't reimbursed.

I am so desperate to get on The Chase, or Millionaire or any other ITV quiz show (Ant and Dec, Catchphrase etc)...but even more so now you've said it was filmed in Teddington as I live not far from there!

Tarkan · 17/03/2024 22:57

I've also been on The Chase. All 4 of us got through and we beat The Beast to win £10,500 each.

We filmed in November 2012 and it aired March 2013. I got the cheque in the December so it was a really good Christmas that year. 😁

I don't actually remember what I wrote on my application form as I did it when I was drunk but I turned up to the audition with bright pink hair and a Hello Kitty crossbody bag so I guess that helped me stand out. I got quite a lot of questions right at the audition but one game we played I had to name Girls Aloud songs and I didn't know a single one (not my sort of music 🤣).

Four of us were shortlisted from the audition and I only ever saw one of the others on an episode, a good few months after mine. I filmed just a month after my audition but we were told some people can be on the shortlist for a couple of years before going on.

Meredusoleil · 17/03/2024 22:59

Scratch my earlier comment. It seems Teddington studios are no more 😕

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/03/2024 22:59

I once auditioned for Tipping Point. We had to do a type of pub quiz and then they filmed us talking about what we’d do with the money. I babbled on a bit 🤣. Never got any further than that. I’d love to go on catchphrase

They also paid for flights for me to London from Aberdeen and they put me up in a hotel in Waterloo the night after filming. So I met up with a couple of friends who live in London and we had a mad night out afterwards.

I missed my flight home though. I have a heart condition and had an attack of it near Buckingham Palace. I had to ask the police for help and they took me into one of their own buildings (I was beside the Queen's Gallery and there had been a terrorist arrested at Heathrow that morning so they wouldn't let me in. One of the top guys in the Met building I was in joked with me about whether I was the terrorist, sounds awful the way I've said it but it was funny at the time.)

I then ended up with them calling an ambulance and I got taken into University College hospital. My attack stopped on the way but they wanted to keep me in for a while. I ended up discharging myself and rushed to the airport only to have missed check in by 20 minutes and they wouldn't rush me through since I didn't have any discharge paperwork from the hospital. Cost £300 to get the next flight home. Blush

I've been on the 1% Club with Lee Mack. Not sure how long it took the winner to get paid as we were one of the first episodes to be filmed in Covid days. Think it's one of the more unusual one as the contestants are also the audience. We got a bottle of water and some chocolate as we were waiting a while to get into the studio. I've also seen £100k drop, Millionaire and 8/10 Cats does Countdown being filmed. Think it's normally 3/4 months after filming before it's on TV but it does depend on circumstances.

Cattenberg · 17/03/2024 23:13

You are all so brave. I daydream about doing this, but I don’t think I ever would. I think I’d panic and my mind would go blank.

I’ve decided that if I ever did go for it, I’d memorise our kings and queens and their dates and do the same for our prime ministers. I’d do a lot more pub quizzes, then move on to radio phone-in quizzes (still under pressure, but at least no one can see you), then finally try out for TV.
