Anyone been on a quiz show?

Has anyone been on a TV quiz show? I’ve been accepted to appear on one later this year. I was just wondering
1- how long after filming does it generally take to air
2- did you get paid soon after filming if you were a winner?
3- what was your experience like?

I was on Mastermind. Filmed in Belfast so exes reimbursed, but no money.

Applied one year, got called and Zoom audition the following year.

It was totally TERRIFYING as was apparent when it was on TV (about three months later).

I didn't win my heat but scored so highly (higher than most other heat winners tbf) that they called me back as a semi-final reserve, but I wasn't needed, so I spent two extra days in Belfast revising an unneeded special subject Grin

I think I’d also dye my hair an unusual colour and start (or invent) an unusual
hobby. “If I win the money, I’ll build a luxury mud bath for my six pygmy hippos”.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 17/03/2024 23:29

My cousin's been on a couple. He won quite a good amount on one, but didn't get paid until the show had aired, which was over a year after filming.

Tr1skel1on · 17/03/2024 23:38

I've won a TV quiz show but I'm not giving details as it would be very outing to anyone who knows me. Safe to say I took the cash and my now DH and I travelled the world instead of the 5 star holiday offered

Peaceandquietwithmydog · 17/03/2024 23:46

I went to a filming of Pointless about 10 years ago ! It was so boring and sad that there wasn’t a gift shop to buy a replica trophy for my Mum 😂

Sounds like nearly every contestant on Only Connects!

You are all so brave. I daydream about doing this, but I don’t think I ever would. I think I’d panic and my mind would go blank.

I’ve decided that if I ever did go for it, I’d memorise our kings and queens and their dates and do the same for our prime ministers. I’d do a lot more pub quizzes, then move on to radio phone-in quizzes (still under pressure, but at least no one can see you), then finally try out for TV.

'I think I’d panic and my mind would go blank.'

Yep, that's exactly what happened to me when I auditioned for 15 to 1. William G Stewart asked each of us a question in turn, round & round the big circle of us standing there. I knew the answers to everyone else's questions, but every time he got to me, I froze & couldn't think of an answer! It was so embarrassing - but at least they gave us £10 at the end (which was a surprise to me, I just went along for the glory). He did say it wasn't about who answered the most questions correctly: they were looking for the right sort of people, who would be OK on TV. I failed on both counts!

Tarkan · 18/03/2024 02:32

I had the brain fart when I was doing The Chase. I regularly get 8-10 right at home for the cash builder. I got 2 on the show. I was a couple of questions in and my brain just went "that's Bradley in front of you, what the hell are you doing?" and everything I knew just left my head.

I took the middle amount and I still have no idea how I got through it. They ask you to try and talk about your choices but other than one I definitely knew I was totally guessing at them.

And typically if I had been in seat 4 rather than seat 2 then I knew most of those questions.

The board when you're standing there just seems so much bigger and more imposing than it seems on TV too.

I've been on Weakest Link with Ann Robinson back in 2009.

I came out third and was very proud of myself as I'm not British and she took the piss out of my accent (which is not that bad) mercilessly. She made me repeat the "Wombles of Wimbledon" about 20 times till I lost it and sat on the floor crying with laughter. At this point everyone was laughing hysterically as well, including Ann. They obviously edited it out as she had to be seen as this hard witch, but they couldn't cut all the funny bits out, you could see her trying not to laugh but not managing it at some points

Mydogisagentleman · 18/03/2024 04:45

My DD and I won £10k on a show hosted by Alan Carr.
The BBC paid our travel expenses and a night in the Premier Inn.
We filmed it in February and it aired in October. We were paid the day it went out

They also paid for flights for me to London from Aberdeen and they put me up in a hotel in Waterloo the night after filming. So I met up with a couple of friends who live in London and we had a mad night out afterwards.

I missed my flight home though. I have a heart condition and had an attack of it near Buckingham Palace. I had to ask the police for help and they took me into one of their own buildings (I was beside the Queen's Gallery and there had been a terrorist arrested at Heathrow that morning so they wouldn't let me in. One of the top guys in the Met building I was in joked with me about whether I was the terrorist, sounds awful the way I've said it but it was funny at the time.)

I then ended up with them calling an ambulance and I got taken into University College hospital. My attack stopped on the way but they wanted to keep me in for a while. I ended up discharging myself and rushed to the airport only to have missed check in by 20 minutes and they wouldn't rush me through since I didn't have any discharge paperwork from the hospital. Cost £300 to get the next flight home. Blush

I’m glad to hear they flew you down (that’s a similar journey to the one I’d need to make if selected) though not so good to hear of the rest of your trip.

My husband did a zoom audition for the 1% club but didn’t get picked.
He applied in the July I think, audition was Sept and the series is going out now and he recognised a fellow auditionee the other week.Have no idea why he got through the application form, he applied jointly with DD who didn’t get a call back, but is by far the most interesting of the pair!
It’s filmed in Manchester and were in London & expenses not paid.

Not what you're looking for, but I know the woman who went on to Ant and Dec, won the lot and then went to take her top off. She hit the red-top headlines on that one - and made for interesting conversations at the school gate.

Don't do that. 😂

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/03/2024 07:43

I often fantasise about applying to Pointless with my son*, as he would have good complementary knowledge to mine - he's excellent at remembering names of songs, bands, films and so on, and he knows something about sport, whereas I know next to nothing. I think we'd have quite a good chance of getting through the early rounds if we could keep our nerve, but we'd almost inevitably be tripped up by the last round where the topics are so tough I'm usually unable to get any correct answer at all, never mind a pointless one!

*I'm quite certain he'd say no, which is another reason this remains a fantasy.

good96 · 18/03/2024 07:47

Not a quiz show, but my cousin appeared on Deal or No Deal. Filmed in November 2006 and went out in January 2007 - they got paid the day the show went to air if I recall - they was in the wings when the £250k was won for the first time.
It was filmed in Bristol back then - new series was in Manchester although believe its moving again! Wish they’d bring it back as a permanent fixture to ITV daytime. Tipping Point needs to go.

It seems a bit mean to take the piss out of someone’s accent, but at least you found it funny too!

I would be proud of coming third in the Weakest Link - the player coming third is often the strongest, who neither of the other two want to face in the final.

I was on University Challenge - back then you did an initial questionnaire and then an in person audition with the producers; they'd go round university campuses and ask some questions plus have a chat with the team. I think we got picked in part because we had several women on the team & were much more balanced than the male dominated ones, because in terms of quizzing there wasn't much between us and the others.

Then off the back of that, a production team got in touch to ask if any of us would be interested in taking part in a new quiz, which turned out to be Pointless. Didn't win the jackpot, but I do have a Pointless trophy!

For both of them travel expenses were reimbursed, you get looked after nicely on the day with food & drink, plus the best bit was having a pro do my make up & run around doing touch ups if you get too hot under the lights. All the presenters were great too - Paxman switched effortlessly between being chatty and kind during the warm up to stern taskmaster when the timer for questioning starts.

BetsyBobbin · 18/03/2024 13:20

@Cattenberg it's not like she was picking on me for that particular reason, being mean to everyone was her whole schtick, so I didn't really mind.

But it was a very funny episode, Ann was on good form that day and also picked on other people, the other contestants were very good sports too, a good group overall. The producers were all smiling and giving me the thumbs up when I was sent off.

I always wanted to know if someone does your makeup! I was worried that I’d end up looking haggard and washed out if I ever made it to tv 😂

have applied to 1% but didn’t even get to the zoom bit that another poster mentioned. Will try again next year as it’s my favourite quiz show

EasterMummie · 19/03/2024 18:39

Hmmmm, yeah I wonder about the make up. I'm going to look more closely! I think they probably do a bit of make up on contestants but thats a pure guess!

Hope you get on the 1% show!

Tarkan · 19/03/2024 18:45

They definitely do make up on The Chase, we got told to wear our normal make up in then they would add what they needed to for the studio lights which for me was thicker foundation, lots of powder and brightening up everything else.

I regularly had my make up checked and face powdered through the day as well. Studio make up is a lot thicker than your normal make up so I'd expect most places do it, the men in my team had some foundation and powder on too.

I came 2nd on 15 to 1 as well. I was in my mid 20s then and pretty sure I was picked at the heat because I was female and under 60. I did get all my questions right as well. Got a night in a hotel in London and some expenses. I had done my make up already but the professional MUA did top it up. Was good fun. Only did it for a laugh.

I remember I got some stick afterwards from the woman who came third. "You were having a go at me from the beginning!" she said, and I said, well, I'm entitled to ask who I want; that's the rules of the game. And there was a rather nice black-and-white photo of us with William G., which regretfully, I no longer have. A shame, especially as it toned down the awful multi-coloured shirt I was wearing! Well, it was the early 80s... 😄

Thank you so much for all the replies. I’m incredibly excited but also very nervous about it all. It’s an absolute bucket list experience for me.
