I binged the lot and loved it, anyone else watched it already?

It made me laugh and I bawled my eyes out at the end.

I was surprised to see such scathing reviews as I enjoyed it loads, some bits were nonsense but it wasn't a documentary so I let that go.

His daughter looks on full of emotion seemingly only moved by their tragic love story rather than being devastated her Dad has died really young. Not for one moment thinking my Dads whole life revolved around this woman and no one else got a look in.

That poor friend of his having his good advice ignored for 10 years. He must have been so bored hearing about her!

diddl · 20/02/2024 17:19

Thank you!

I disliked both of them!

Her for being so horrible & him for entertaining her at all after she was so rude in the art gallery.

It all felt so implausible.

Convenient I suppose that he felt he had to get married so that the marriage maybe wasn't the strongest?

What happened to his wife & baby?

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 20/02/2024 17:21

He divorced his wife and had regular contact with his daughter. His wife remarried and he felt a bit threatened by the step dad who the daughter was close to.

Oh dear!

Milsteen · 20/02/2024 19:39

It didn’t work as a tragic love story imo. They could’ve got together much sooner - I actually don’t know why they didn’t, there really wasn’t anything keeping them apart - it was all too contrived.

Janetsmug · 21/02/2024 03:41

I hated both characters, he was an utter dick to his wife and Alice was just an all-round dick, completely self obsessed and not giving a fuck about the chaos she wreaked on other people's lives. No idea why I stuck it out to the end, wish I hadn't bothered!

HelenDamnation1 · 21/02/2024 11:24

I loved it. Faults and all. For me, the chemistry was so intense I was willing to overlook the ridiculous.

I just didn't click with One Day though. It just didn't capture me at all.

diddl · 21/02/2024 12:01

Presumably because Alice didn't want to?

So was it a case of she didn't want him until someone else had him?

And he was utterly obsessed?
(Although who knows why?)

I'm the same

@diddl they circle in and out of each others lives, he gets divorced and she nearly gets married but gilts him as he isn't Jack.

She decides to do IVF. They end up doing it the national way and get pregnant. It looks finally like happy ever after but at her first scan it is discovered she has cancer.

She dies and he has an underlying heart condition and dies on a park bench outside the hospital the morning after her death.

They are buried in graves next to each other.

The end

Thanks for saving me from seeing any more of it. Two eps in and I'm out. I pretty much guessed where it was going from that clunky script (destination death, obviously, where else?). I can't believe they've made two fantastic actors come across so badly. The best friend was the best thing in it by miles and, to be fair, he did not have much competition. And that dreadful plinky plinky soundtrack? Could it be anymore annoying?

C4 drama execs give your heads a wobble.

Couldn't stand One Day either. Next!

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 21/02/2024 19:18

I do love the review for tonight's episode when they question if the writer got a bit distracted after reading the financial times that morning.

It was like an episode of Industry if anyone watched that on BBC

Yesssssssssss · 21/02/2024 22:00

I didn't enjoy the first episode but after that, I was really drawn in. I don't think it's about liking Alice, more about understanding why she behaves as she does. Jack is bewildered but comes to understand that she doesn't hurt him because she's nasty but because she has been very very damaged by her past.
I think that's beautiful.

ASDorNO · 22/02/2024 20:44

What a load of crap. No chemistry and completely implausible plot. It's trying so hard to be another One Day and failing dismally. Just when I thought I would give it one more go he sits opposite a date telling her he's in love with another woman but "I am available" 🙄. The only believable character was his bearded work mate! Save yourself the pain and give it a wide berth.

orangesareblue · 23/02/2024 09:19

so he's single for 15 years whilst waiting for the emotionally unavailable Alice, who treats him like crap, but gives him a great investment opportunity to make up for it, is invited as her best man to her wedding, which he doesn't know about until
he gets the invite (and she did fall in love with Danny but wants to commit to him but not to
Jack), goes on dates with two other lovely women and tells them
he's been in love with Alice for 15 years and they still love each other), leaves the lovely,
intelligent, beautiful Mum of his daughter because he has feelings for Alice, finally kind of wants to be with Alice, who then dies.
And just when we think that in death, Jack might finally be able to find a decent partner, he snuffs it too.
WTF?
Why did I watch it
all?
And why did baby Celia
have beautiful bright red hair ljke her Dad, but teenage Celia had mousey brown hair?

wizzbitt · 23/02/2024 09:33

Finished episode two and not loving it. At all. Much preferred One Day.
I thought the writing was poor. Gleeson is gorgeous and plays verbose sensitive souls beautifully but he's just boring. I don't care what your job is and looking down and smiling bashfully is not adorable.
Also snogging in a bath/shower with water cascading down is not spontaneous and sexy it's foolish and impractical.

Namechangedforthis25 · 23/02/2024 19:05

Yeah much preferred one day to this tosh:

  • there’s nothing stopping them being together as they admitted their feelings on day one. They were old enough and clever enough to stop playing games and just get on with it. This wasn’t Romeo and Juliet because their relationship status was down to their games
  • one day was different - they didn’t admit their feelings for years and years and life got in the way. That was about the dance of love.
  • based on Alice constantly disappearing and rejecting Jack, I didn’t actually think she loved him at all. Plus they didn’t have any chemistry at all.
  • they were fundamentally unlikable people - actually very annoying.
  • her passing was plausible and sad.
  • him passing the next day was ridiculous - very unlikely story and just adds to the lack of belief or interest I have in this story
  • no great visuals, no great music, cinematography was dire
  • no reference to indicate the passage of tome - other than a slight reference to lab tech evolving
  • ultimately utterly utterly boring - they couldn’t have made it more boring if they tried!
tennissquare · 23/02/2024 20:43

Wow, so many different views, it took me while to get into but I absolutely loved the last 2 episodes and it moved me far more than One Day.
The ballet by Celia was Giselle and 1 of my most favourite parts.

I have also watched All of Us Strangers too in past 3 weeks. Lots of tears all round but most for Alice and Jack.

Treetops09 · 23/02/2024 21:57

Another fan here. She didn’t want to be with him as she was so damaged and didn’t want to inflict that on him. I thought their day walking around London was beautiful. Loved both best friends too.

Exactly that.

When you love someone that much and you know you're not "normal" (as victims of abuse always feel like), you're scared that you will disappoint them, so you just finish it before you even start it.

It really struck a cord with me as my parents died a week apart from each other last year. It was a completely different kind of relationship as they were together for nearly 60 years but, still, these things happen.

Beachcomber74 · 25/02/2024 11:09

Loved it. I thought the final scene with daughter going through storage boxes in unit was strange & could’ve been set in his home-more impactful. Why was she shredding the documents? Alice looked like a dancer. The long awaited Cuba scene was shot in Gran Canaria!

Crispedia · 25/02/2024 18:18

Why was she shredding the documents?

i presumed it was all his research work which was no longer needed.

Violetparis · 25/02/2024 22:47

Gave up after first episode, so stilted and no chemistry. Alice was just awful, no idea why Jack was desperate to see her again.

tennissquare · 25/02/2024 23:00

@Violetparis , personally I thought episode 6 was the most moving tv I have seen this year and it will stay with me for a long time.

I've been to Havana and thought there's no way that's Cuba! Also, I don't recall any photobooths there. Especially not just sitting on the street like that.

Regardless, the last two episodes were very well done - great acting by both leads.

ConstantastheNorthernStar · 26/02/2024 13:41

I got irrationally annoyed when the daughter became an advanced ballet dancer in about 5 minutes after picking it up aged 12 or so, and stopped watching!
