ALICE AND JACK. WED AND THUR 9pm - ch 4 - tv pace. No spoilers

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/02/2024 19:55

I’m sure I did a thread for this but can’t find it

starts tonight. On wed and thur for 3w

Alice, played by Andrea Riseborough – yes, the Andrea Riseborough of Academy Award-nominated notoriety (https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/oscars/a43777187/oscars-changes-andrea-riseborough-controversy/) – meets Jack, played by Domhnall Gleeson, with all of his About Time (https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a509440/about-time-review-richard-curtiss-directorial-swansong/) romantic-lead kudos.

If you loved Gleeson in that Richard Curtis gem, you will probably fall for him in this, since he's playing much the same sort of bloke.

Jack is an awkward but adorable lab scientist who becomes utterly besotted with spiky female finance-bro (sis?) Alice, who resolves to keep him at a remove the length of several bargepoles.

After the pair spend the night together, Alice unceremoniously asks him to leave and never contact her again.

So far, so romantic. We then scoot forward a couple of years and find Jack has had a child with the rather warmer Lynn (Aisling Bea).

Then Alice calls and the wheels of ill-fated romance are set in motion

The six-parter has been ambitiously billed as a "love story for the ages". That might be a stretch, given that the mood of Alice & Jack is utterly at the mercy of melancholic Alice, helped along by an earnest strumming score which at times feels fittingly bittersweet and at others is reminiscent of hotel foyer music.

As the pair's offbeat and somewhat unlikely connection bubbles away across the years, the question of the piece becomes why is Alice so determined to push Jack away? When the answer comes, the melancholia only quadruples.

'About Time' review

That's it then. Richard Curtis's last directorial effort is a time-hopping romance with Rachel McAdams

Feeling bereft after One Day, I’m trying this. Just no so far. Might just be watch One Day again, although doubt my heart could take it

Artemis6 · 16/02/2024 22:36

Alice is bloody awful.
The way she behaved at the art gallery!

ArcaneWireless · 16/02/2024 22:40

Hello blondes

I have such a welling of upset in my chest watching this. I’m not sure why.

This is beautifully bleak.

I’m longing for a happy ending already.

WomanInBlack78 · 16/02/2024 22:51

Have actually stuck with it and it’s grown on me

WomanInBlack78 · 16/02/2024 22:58

But there’s ZERO chemistry between them, I don’t get why they’re drawn to each other at all. Feels so cringey and forced

. . . and screaming whilst holding the baby.

That would be the last straw for me - and Jack is like ' oh it's ok I'll always love you no matter what you do'.
What, like scream in your BABYS FACE??

This is how toxic abusive homes are made for children.

Ch4 better have some big f get out clause because otherwise it's totally unacceptable to tout this as 'romance'. It's in the arena of abuse right now.

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/02/2024 00:41

Well, I've watched it all now. I won't give anything away and it did grow on me a bit but I think it would have been better with almost anyone else as the female lead.

mikado1 · 17/02/2024 08:00

Alice is so so unlikeable but her skin is incredible.

Agree with pp he should have thrown her put after screaming with baby. Her getting up to the baby was so wrong anyway as was her staying over etc. So upsetting for Lynn. He seems almost like he's no choice but to be with her, as a pp said, it's like an abusive or coercive relationship. Also agree I haven't picked up on the idea of them being so connected. Also like Paul.

Artemis6 · 17/02/2024 09:02

Her skin is amazing but I wish she’d put some mascara on!

purpleme12 · 17/02/2024 09:04

Why should she put some mascara on?!!

Ah bless you @ArcaneWireless

I can't see a happy ending myself

I’ve watched the first two blondes

Mam has yet to watch it and she is expecting it to be a bit like Catastrophe.

I’ve had to change her expectations a wee bit going by the first two episodes…

I’m hanging in there for a happy ending. They owe me that.

That or a substantial amount of chocolate. And gin.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/02/2024 16:55

Yes I've seen 1&2

3&4 are on next week

I've just started to watch & so far (imo) so implausible!

One night stand-OK.

Please don't pop out to get me breakfast?

I wish he had left her when she was rude to the receptionist(?) at the art gallery.

Who was the actress playing the character to whom she said that they couldn't be friends as she pays her?

Or the character's name?

purpleme12 · 17/02/2024 17:34

Aimee Lou Wood is the actress

diddl · 17/02/2024 17:36

Thank you.

Edited to add-was trying to find out what I had seen her in.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/02/2024 17:58

Quite frankly someone would have to pay me to be friends with her !!!

Can't decide whether to keep going to see if there's some big reveal as to why she is how she is.

WomanInBlack78 · 17/02/2024 19:01

I kept going… but feel I wasted my hours. It’s just really…. odd

diddl · 17/02/2024 19:16

Oh FFS!

Just finished the 1st ep.

So he's married someone he has just met because she's pregnant.

And in bounces Alice with her mum has just died & she can't face such things without him.

Infuriating!

He's going to fall for it isn't he!

Fernsfernsferns · 17/02/2024 20:22

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/02/2024 13:17

Not sure why felt they had a real connection in the beginning tbh

I’ve seen episode 1

made me wonder why we think stories / dramas about emotionally unavailable or avoidant people are ‘great love stories’

they are not.

i guess it makes a change that she’s the one unavailable not him.

but I don’t have much patience with it.

i also find it implausible if Jack was a decent guy that he’d get into an emotional affair with her when he’s got a lovely real life relationship already

diddl · 17/02/2024 20:44

A lot of classics that are touted as love stories really aren't are they?

Cathy & Heathcliff, Rhett & Scarlet to name just a couple😊

Yes totally.

i forgive those examples though as they were written in different eras - Withering Heights more than 150 years ago before the expansion in understanding of human emotions and relationships we’ve made in the last 50 or so years

diddl · 17/02/2024 21:33

Yes they might not have been the best examples!

duc748 · 17/02/2024 21:41

I think it's fair to say that there's a considerable body of evidence on MN to suggest that 'understanding of human emotions and relationship' still has quite a way to go. 😛
