ALICE AND JACK. WED AND THUR 9pm - ch 4 - tv pace. No spoilers

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/02/2024 19:55

I’m sure I did a thread for this but can’t find it

starts tonight. On wed and thur for 3w

Alice, played by Andrea Riseborough – yes, the Andrea Riseborough of Academy Award-nominated notoriety (https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/oscars/a43777187/oscars-changes-andrea-riseborough-controversy/) – meets Jack, played by Domhnall Gleeson, with all of his About Time (https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a509440/about-time-review-richard-curtiss-directorial-swansong/) romantic-lead kudos.

If you loved Gleeson in that Richard Curtis gem, you will probably fall for him in this, since he's playing much the same sort of bloke.

Jack is an awkward but adorable lab scientist who becomes utterly besotted with spiky female finance-bro (sis?) Alice, who resolves to keep him at a remove the length of several bargepoles.

After the pair spend the night together, Alice unceremoniously asks him to leave and never contact her again.

So far, so romantic. We then scoot forward a couple of years and find Jack has had a child with the rather warmer Lynn (Aisling Bea).

Then Alice calls and the wheels of ill-fated romance are set in motion

The six-parter has been ambitiously billed as a "love story for the ages". That might be a stretch, given that the mood of Alice & Jack is utterly at the mercy of melancholic Alice, helped along by an earnest strumming score which at times feels fittingly bittersweet and at others is reminiscent of hotel foyer music.

As the pair's offbeat and somewhat unlikely connection bubbles away across the years, the question of the piece becomes why is Alice so determined to push Jack away? When the answer comes, the melancholia only quadruples.

'About Time' review

That's it then. Richard Curtis's last directorial effort is a time-hopping romance with Rachel McAdams

I didn't want to see a dead body either

Choux · 29/02/2024 23:24

They were monitoring his aneurysm and waiting for it to get to 5cm before doing the surgery (to fit a sleeve?).

So the whole series must have taken place over 18? years? From about a year before Celia was born till she was 16 or so? And Jack was telling people on dates they had been in love for 15 years. Plus a bit longer to do the insemination, pregnancy, cancer part.

Oh I believed in them more by the end, and the looking back seemed more believable than first time round. I liked them more too.. why was his aneurysm not sorted?! And why did Celia shred what was in the box?

And please, someone, where did Alice get her clothes?

Yes, I want to know about Alice’s clothes too.

I don’t think Celia shredding stuff was intended to be significant — she kept the box of personal stuff and was just shredding old work notes (though I’d be surprised if much of that was paper…)

Just seen last episode

That was weird

So they both died and now together again up above

I kinda feel I have wasted many hours on this

Def not what a call a love story

Well , I didn't like the last episode . All the rest had been quirky and this one was like an old film and didn't fit in with the rest. And the music went on and on and on , almost throughout the whole hour . Disappointing .

Choux · 29/02/2024 15:43

I assume she had to have an abortion before he chemo.

He hasn't had his heart operation yet though has he? It feels like Episode 6 will be a race to the death. Who will keel over first her or him. Or will it be so raw-mantic and they pass away the same day? (which is just the kind of ludicrous ending this ridiculous drama script would serve up)

Have you seen the ending?

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/02/2024 17:56

I agree

Not sure all do

I may cull /start a list as many on it and sure most don't reply

Takes a while to type out every thread

Just make a word ot Google doc with all the tags of the telly people on and copy and paste each time. I thought that's what you did actually.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/03/2024 13:07

I copy and paste but have to edit and add @ everytime

As mn doesn't seem to like lots of @@@@@@

I just caught up with the last episode - had to see it through.

Well, it seemed like they were on the downward spiral from the first meet. Forever destined to spend eternity as the palest people in Cuba.

Villagetoraiseachild · 03/03/2024 17:37

I kind of wish they had just stayed in Cuba being happy and saved everyone else from the misery.

Series now finished - so spoilers *

I binged watched it and have just finished . I am not sure if I had watched it an episode or two per week that I would have kept going .
It did keep me interested even if I still found the two main characters annoying.

I think at the beginning it was difficult to see the attraction / chemistry between them . They didn't exactly rip each others clothes off even at their first encounter - all seemed very slow / sensual ???
I guessed right at the beginning why she was such a hard / brittle character . Whilst she isn't likeable as a character you do end up feeling sympathy for her as not only was she abused by her father , but also her mother does nothing about this when she finds out and prioritises alcohol over her daughter .
She is messed up but as others have said she had lots of money to chuck at therapy . Appreciate that it is not as simple as that ( Prince H springs to mind ...).

I think it is difficult to see why Jack who appears to be a really decent guy puts Alice above everyone else including his wife and child .

The bit I struggle with is if they have such a passionate / all encompassing relationship that they are able to get on without seeing each other for several years at a time .
Jack does seem a bit naive readily telling two potential romantic interests about how he is in love with her . Then expecting them to be ok with it because he was straight with them . Confused

I thought it was a bit silly how Celia the daughter went from no ballet at all as a teenager to then being so accomplished to do solos .
I also didn't really get her good relationship with Alice - surely she would have resented her as her dad always seem to prioritise Alice over her .

Pet peeve - surely in the vast expensive apartment that Alice had that she would have had more than 1 bedroom / a spare bed for Jack to sleep in ????Ok I get that she wasn't Miss sociable and wouldn't have been doing lots of entertaining . They don't think we are able to accept that the couple concerned aren't sleeping together unless one of them is shown spending an uncomfortable night on the sofa . Confused

I also spotted the inconsistency as someone else pointed earlier in the kite episode when she goes from pale lips to red lips in the same scene .

I loved Aisling Bea and the best friend in it . Overall glad I watched . The ending was also a bit predictable though .

DonnasShrugaleros · 08/03/2024 11:13

A couple of things that bugged me

1 - normally researchers focus on one area no? So not an autoimmune disease then oncology.

2 - he would have known what Ehlers Danlos was considering he worked in medical research. And why was there no consideration for Celia when he's diagnosed with a genetic condition?

purpleme12 · 08/03/2024 11:22

To be fair though I don't think the programme chose to focus on him and his family as a whole.
The programme chose to focus on him and Alice so I don't think it's too odd that other stuff wasn't included

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 09/03/2024 05:44

I was sorry wasted my time watching it but got invested in it as think he is a great actor but it was pure mush and got on my nerves in the end. Was she just mental and he was a fool to put her before his wife and child. Good acting but awful story.

SoleTrader · 09/03/2024 21:24

Apparently it was based on a true story.

Nooooooooooo

What passion did they have

I just didn't get the everlasting urge jack had

Just finished watching this.
I felt the writers fetishised her wealth and ability to make money (including for Jack). In fact much of her identity seemed to be tied to it.
If she had had a bog standard job on average wage I wonder how the story would have gone.
