ALICE AND JACK. WED AND THUR 9pm - ch 4 - tv pace. No spoilers

starts tonight. On wed and thur for 3w

Alice, played by Andrea Riseborough – yes, the Andrea Riseborough of Academy Award-nominated notoriety (https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/oscars/a43777187/oscars-changes-andrea-riseborough-controversy/) – meets Jack, played by Domhnall Gleeson, with all of his About Time (https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a509440/about-time-review-richard-curtiss-directorial-swansong/) romantic-lead kudos.

If you loved Gleeson in that Richard Curtis gem, you will probably fall for him in this, since he's playing much the same sort of bloke.

Jack is an awkward but adorable lab scientist who becomes utterly besotted with spiky female finance-bro (sis?) Alice, who resolves to keep him at a remove the length of several bargepoles.

After the pair spend the night together, Alice unceremoniously asks him to leave and never contact her again.

So far, so romantic. We then scoot forward a couple of years and find Jack has had a child with the rather warmer Lynn (Aisling Bea).

Then Alice calls and the wheels of ill-fated romance are set in motion

The six-parter has been ambitiously billed as a "love story for the ages". That might be a stretch, given that the mood of Alice & Jack is utterly at the mercy of melancholic Alice, helped along by an earnest strumming score which at times feels fittingly bittersweet and at others is reminiscent of hotel foyer music.

As the pair's offbeat and somewhat unlikely connection bubbles away across the years, the question of the piece becomes why is Alice so determined to push Jack away? When the answer comes, the melancholia only quadruples.

Well I've watched the first episode.
I'm not entirely sure what to think.
I don't think I'm invested in their relationship though

I've finished it. Honestly, it was all really odd and annoying. The daughter was the most likeable character.

I also don't get how they're drawn to each other from the basis of that little 'relationship' they had at the start

I don't like how in the beginning when he was willing and available, she ghosted him. Then she finds out he has a wife and a baby and suddenly can't leave him alone. Both rather drippy, unpleasant characters. I don't think I want to spend anymore time with them tbh.

Edited to add - when the dad had a heart attack and almost fell into the grave was actually the funniest bit. I was lol-ing. But then - it was on the news?! Even more lol-ing.

Ep 2 was a lot better than E1 but I can't stand Alice. I think part of the problem is the hellish slash of lipstick across her face. And there is calculation when she hauls Jack back into her life whenever he seems to be settling down.

I binge watched this and agree with many of the comments so far about the characters being insufferably unlikeable. But I think it's worth persevering! I'm glad I did. 😀

That's been shown on Tele! It was in episode 2 which was shown on Tele yesterday evening!

I'm just not finding it credible. They had two nights together. After the first one she chucked him out and said don't contact me again. After the second one she turned out to be completely weird, unhinged and unpleasant (art gallery scene). Then he meets a lovely, funny, far more attractive woman and has everything - they even seem to be managing to have made the unexpected pregnancy work and both seem happy... then weird, unhinged and unpleasant turns up at his lab (you'd just be totally freaked out!) and suddenly she's the love of his life who he's never got over, and he has to Be There for her. He hardly knows her!

I get that we're supposed to buy that they have this amazing, once in a lifetime, chemistry... but I'm not seeing it, I'm not feeling it... I'm not buying it.

If he posted on here everyone would tell him it was a bad case of limerance.

Oh and in the scene on the hill, with the kites. Every time the camera looked at her from the right, she had the ridiculous lipstick on. But when the camera was on her left, she had no lipstick on. Magical disappearing lipstick.

I don't know whether to bother with episode 3.

I mostly agree with what everyone's saying about the 'relationship' (not that it's a relationship!)

I've binged watched yesterday so I will keep quiet about my opinions at the moment but I will be back when you have all finished it!

Episode 2 was much better than the first one . Didn't like Alice at the beginning , still don't , now dislike Jack too , he's selfish . His friend , Paul , comes across as ok though .

Haven't watched yet even though I like the main actor. Is it similar to one day? That was brilliant
