I remember attending playgroup in the 80’s. We had bottles of milk at break time & the Jenny yellow hat/ Peter blue hat books. Anyone remember those? We also had squash & biscuits. We called it playgroup not nursery but parents didn’t stay. Probably different in different areas.

PuttingDownRoots · 05/02/2024 13:59

I went to nursery school in the late 80s... mornings only, church hall. Set session times. Then went home with my childminder who was one of the staff. It must have been from 2yo, maybe 2.5yo as I had a small overlap with my brother, who would have started school just before my 3rd birthday (at Easter since he was summer born so couldn't start before then, just one term of Reception)

Horrace · 05/02/2024 14:04

I so love CTM but wish more than anything that the Turners would all die. Not the wee Turners, but Dr, his wife and Dr Turner Jnr. They're so insipid, head tilty and hammy. Can't abide them

shearwater2 · 05/02/2024 14:32

Spot on @ditalini

I also remember being allowed to run up to the sea and back with a bucket on my own when I was about four. Making a moat for my sandcastle and learning about the porosity of sand. Eventually.

shearwater2 · 05/02/2024 14:35

I went to nursery school in 1978, one attached to a primary school next door. There was definitely talk of play group, but I don't know what that was as I didn't go to one, and there were the odd day nurseries also. I didn't hear of pre-school until I moved to London as an adult, but it might have always been a thing in London for all I know.

LakeTiticaca · 05/02/2024 14:39

I have absolutely zero medical training but even I know about secondary drowning. Medical staff aplenty at the beach yet it took medical student Timothy to spot it.
Shame on them!!

shearwater2 · 05/02/2024 14:45

I knew she was going to have secondary drowning as well. Hadn't heard of it myself until about ten years ago when I worked next to medical negligence solicitors, then it practically gave me nightmares. I'm not sure that it was well-known in 1970 though and they called it something else in the episode.

Bunionbabe · 05/02/2024 14:46

There is 'something of the night' about Doc T. A concealed dark side. HG does seem to have a specific taste in men. They all look interchangeable. Fred abd Vi seem to have put on a lot of weight each since I watched it last.

shearwater2 · 05/02/2024 14:46

Actually it was quite good in a way that the writers found a subject Dr Turner wasn't an expert on.

medicalmysterymachine · 05/02/2024 14:56

The best actor in the whole thing this week was the little girl who played Danielle.

Mrs Turner sobbing to Sister Whatsherface literally made me laugh out loud. It's all so one-tone - no time for reflection / expansion or growth of characters.

Nine times out of ten you can guess what's happening next and the tenth time is usually a main character disappearing, never to be seen again.

Is Sweaty Matty actually sweaty or is it the grease from his hair dripping down his face?

I said she was going to suffer from secondary drowning as soon as she quickly recovered and dh told me there was no such thing! I felt so smug as the episode progressed!

Also is there going to be a romance between Nancy and Dr Timothy?? What's the age gap?

I actually think there's not that much of an age gap, sure, enough to start gossip but not that big.
I'd say Nancy is maybe 24/25 and Tim 20/21? Pure guesses, though.

ditalini · 05/02/2024 15:25

I "diagnosed" both of the cases-of-the-week and I'm sure I learned about both of them on mnet.

It did all smack a bit of a Public Service Broadcast: "Parents!...

  • Watch out for your children at the beach!
  • Always get a near-drowning victim checked out by medics, even if they seem well!
  • If you see a strange reflection in one eye on a photo of your child, get them seen!"
LimberlostLark · 05/02/2024 15:26

CTM wiki (yes, there IS such a thing) tells me Timotei is 21 and Fancy Nancy is 28.

I doubt it would have been known much about back then

Far too big an age gap in the mumsnet world

It must NEVER be greater than six months either way lest you are accused of granny grabbing/paedophilia 😉

I don't know whose cornflakes Trixie pissed in-remember how plucky, brave and wonderful she was when she did heroic things like performing an emergency c section in africa?? she was a fabulous midwife and now she is a silly, frothy spendthrift who pays no attention to her patients, no attention her husband (and why he is so sweaty) and none to her poor stepson-imagine him losing his mum and being shipped off so they can have time alone!!!!!

And these days they can only seem to fit one birth in where there used to be a few every episode.

And what on earth is the plan for those other 2 new midwives? I think one spoke yesterday.

I just can not stick Fancy Nancy. At all.

DelphineFox · 05/02/2024 15:36

he has a very!! creepy vibe in this pic-a bit Child Catcher.

Come here little girl and have some sweeties...

Edited to say I can see pic didn't post-one directly above is what I was referring to

CecilyP · 05/02/2024 16:28

DelphineFox · 05/02/2024 00:46

Yes, I was born in 71 and it was called play school or nursery school, not pre school.

Edited

The official term was pre-school playgroup and I believe they came in in the early 70s, possibly there were a few in ‘69. But what Trixie was talking about was definitely a private nursery school which would not have been referred to as a pre-school.

I remember those books. It was the village with three corners series. We had plastic collars with an animal to identity our milk bottles. Mine was a ladybird.

GoodCoffeeEveryMorning · 05/02/2024 17:04

Child of 1972 here. Veteran of playgroup, nursery, and those towelling things. I think my parents still use it.

DaffodilCharm · 05/02/2024 17:07

Oh I just remembered what my beef with the episode was. All the talking about what was wrong with Danielle while she was in the room. It just didn't feel like something they'd do at the time. I felt like she'd be in another room somewhere and then there'd be a big thing about what to tell her.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 05/02/2024 07:45

I wonder if Matthew will take his own life? Can’t cope with the financial ruin? Not sure if that would fit in with the comfortable CTM though.

I thought the same

PinkFrogss · 05/02/2024 17:59

Didn’t Trixie also inherit from the rich aunt who used to give her a generous allowance?
