First episode of Vera 2024 was shown last night (7 January)

I was sure there was a thread about this but cant find it.

So can someone give me the link, or if you want to comment on the start of this new series please use this.

I am wondering what others thought of it.

Thanks for this.

I tend to watch TV on 'Catch Up' and just skim through the days, but all ITV programmes disappeared off the daily menu last year, so I would never have known there was a new series on.

IwantToRetire · 08/01/2024 18:19

There was a Christmas special did you see that? https://www.itv.com/watch/vera/1a7314/1a7314a0055

There was a thread and for some reason cant find it.

Thanks, yes. I saw that on here, but had assumed it was a one off Christmas special.
Thanks for linking though. Smile

IwantToRetire · 08/01/2024 22:17

lovely Joe???????????

He was really nasty and unhelpful.

Or was he always like that and I forgot.

Lovely David Leon then - as in looks not character! But I’m old enough to be his mother - everyone seems younger than me nowadays. 😢

LaurieFairyCake · 08/01/2024 22:36

I knew he was coming back and I remember when he was replaced by not-Joe

I can't tell the difference between them AT ALL

both tall, black hair and wear dark clothes and play the same character 🤷‍♀️

They're literally interchangeable - which is now what they're doing as not-Joe has the door open to come back Grin

icelolly99 · 09/01/2024 00:17

Thought it was a bit disappointing that they explained Aidens departure but not Jacks...

IwantToRetire · 09/01/2024 00:23

but not Jacks...

Vera did say about her being hand picked for some specialist unit that would make full use of her skills, and of course it was understandable she would want to move there.

At first I wonder if it meant everyone would get moved up on layer of the hierarchies , but no we got the return of Mr Sulky!

Some of the plot line was a bit hard to accept ie that the murder victims turned out to be the half brother of the woman he was supposedly interested in. And they found out by the unlikely event of her being arrested for some minor crime.

But have to say I was almost cheering on the vengeful wife, her husband seemed really unpleasant.

I think Joe was always a bit of a dick.

I don't think I noticed the first time I watched it but when I've watched repeats I think sometimes he was very rude to Vera.
There was one where he didn't agree with her about something, either whether it was a murder or one of the suspects, I can't really remember now, but he was really aggressive about it and basically saying she was losing it and getting too old. Although Vera can obviously be a pain as well 🤣

I think Aiden was much nicer.

IwantToRetire · 10/01/2024 00:48

I think Joe was always a bit of a dick.

He was very conventional wasn't he. All about the nuclear family and working your way up the ladder at work. (Or was that what his wife wanted and he played along?)

But also, although some time ago so memory a bit blurred, when the showed more about Vera's home life, he was totally unable to understand why anyone would live like she did.

Like he is now saying get new equipment, get a new car, and sneering at everyone.

Aidan was OK, but I was sad to see Joe go, so am delighted to see him back again. I like the needling between Vera and Joe. Having now read all the books, it's truer to them.

Here's the previous thread. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4720714-vera-heads-up

Vera said that Jac had gone 'back to Fraud', if I heard rightly. We must be supposed to assume a fair amount of time has passed since the episode that went out just after Christmas, as Aidan has handed in and worked his notice and emigrated to Australia in that time.

VERA heads up | Mumsnet

New Vera episode tonight on ITV (actually the unaired final episode of series 11 from last year) Series 12 starts at the end of January.

I much prefer Aiden to Joe , probably because I prefer the actor , it’s a shame he wanted to stop doing them .

FluffyFeathers · 11/01/2024 22:24

Aw I love Joe. Pleased he’s back and a proper Geordie too. As is Mark.
Im from up there so I’m always sussing out the accents and know straight away who isn’t local.

Xmasbaby11 · 11/01/2024 23:36

I used to like Joe but his character had changed and he was quite rude to people and up himself. I’m not pleased to see him back at all!

OhcantthInkofaname · 11/01/2024 23:47

I am so jealous. I have to wait weeks for the drop in the US.

Surely technology can fix that? Britbox? VPN's?

To be fair, there are much better programmes on UK TV than Vera! 😀

Clawdy · 15/01/2024 13:43

Not the most gripping episode , but the girl playing Fiona was so beautiful! Interesting to see Julia Sawhalla back too.

duc748 · 15/01/2024 13:52

I had the culprit (as always, more sad than bad) marked after ten minutes, and I'm a lousy detective. 😃Generally in Vera, look for the most decent human being in the story, and they're generally the murderer. And as soon as they started to find anything out about Gabi, it became clear that she was dodgy AF. You'd have thought the first thought would be that that might well not be her real name.

CaramelEmporium · 15/01/2024 14:37

I live up here so I love location spotting.

I thought Julia Sawalha’s geordie accent was awful though!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/01/2024 21:15

It wasn't great, no, and it wasn't even required by the plot! Still good to see her.

Bit of trivia - Gillian Kearney, who played the murdered woman's mother, was the young Shirley Valentine in the film.

IwantToRetire · 16/01/2024 00:59

I watched it and thought there was a big plot hole, and then thought I will ask on this thread and someone will explain.

But when I woke up this morning had no memory of most of it.

But I did like the way the investigation went back wards from the first representation of the victim as being someone who we eventually found out was virtually the opposite.

And glad to see that Vera has got Mr Sulky back under her thumb again, doing his duty to fit in with what she wants.

And glad to see that Vera has got Mr Sulky back under her thumb again, doing his duty to fit in with what she wants.

I think it was obvious that was going to happen, especially when in episode 1 she said something about him standing there looking all miserable in his new coat - the scathing "in yer new coat" like it was the worse insult she could come up with 😂
