New Vera episode tonight on ITV (actually the unaired final episode of series 11 from last year)
Series 12 starts at the end of January.

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 15/01/2023 18:28

Was just going to post a new thread as I couldn't make out if this was a episode or not.

Thanks for the explanation, though have to say I will be recording it as I have to watch Happy Valley in real time.

Ambertonix · 15/01/2023 18:42

Thanks for the reminder. Thats my night sorted! Im waiting until all the Happy Valley series 3 are on i-player so i can binge watch them.

Edinburghmusing · 15/01/2023 18:43

Oh exciting! I’ve missed The Hat

PerilousErection · 15/01/2023 18:46

Ooooohhhhh thanks for the heads up.

daffodilandtulip · 15/01/2023 20:00

Ahhh thought someone on here would know. Came to search as I couldn't decide if it was a repeat!

AutisticLegoLover · 15/01/2023 20:46

Watching now but will be doing a Vera and happy valley sandwich with HP as the filling.

Edinburghmusing · 15/01/2023 21:02

@AutisticLegoLover oh what’s HP??

Edinburghmusing · 15/01/2023 21:04

Happy Valley is late to iPlayer??

AutisticLegoLover · 15/01/2023 23:38

Typo. Should be HV for Happy Valley.

IwantToRetire · 16/01/2023 15:30

I made the mistake of watching Happy Valley and then later started to watch Vera which I had recorded.

Normally I like Vera and go along with the style of the programme.

But after Happy Valley I just couldn't be bothered with it.

Will store recording for some later date when I wont have memories of Happy Valley in my head.

duc748 · 16/01/2023 23:52

Heh! I agree, but after watching HV last night, it would put most things in the shade. But I recorded Vera (or I'd never cope with all those ads), and watched tonight. Again that familiar template where the perp(s) are 'more sad than bad'.

UsingChangeofName · 16/01/2023 23:54

Thanks for the heads up.
They have so many older episodes randomly popping up on my 'Catch up' menu I would probably have just scrolled by.

Just watched recording, for similar reasons to everyone else - need to decompress after HV! Also good to FF through the ads, of which there seemed to be a great many, given it's 2 hours long. Anyway. Agree with above point, but also, having watched every episode of Vera, I just want to get off my chest that murder isn't an area where we need to be pushing for women to be equally represented as perps! I suppose their feeling is 'man last week, woman this week, then it's fair to the actors', but this is so unrealistic. (Yes, I know. I'm moaning about lack of realism in a TV crime drama with a senior police officer who's played by a 76yo.)

AutisticLegoLover · 18/01/2023 19:10

I enjoyed my Vera Happy Valley sandwich. Gentle bread of Vera, fiery filling of HV, gentle bread of Vera. It's what I'll be doing this week too assuming Vera is on.

Clawdy · 22/01/2023 17:00

Glad it's back, but wish it didn't clash with HV. Have to record it each Sunday now, then try to find time to see it in the week.

duc748 · 22/01/2023 17:25

I'm recording them both. Don't start watching HV till about 20 past, so I can FF through the ads. There might be time for Vera later.

AutisticLegoLover · 23/01/2023 07:00

I always find the endings of Vera very sad. The murdered is never a truly evil person, but mainly just one who has made a terrible mistake. There's been a few premeditated murders but most seem to be accidents with people ending up in situations that are very messy.
Has anyone read the books by Ann Cleaves?

Clawdy · 23/01/2023 08:24

Yes, the Vera books are good, the Shetland series is even better. But I can't take to the newer Matthew Venn series, just not as good.

duc748 · 23/01/2023 11:28

I said upthread that the perp is usually more sad than bad, and once again that was the case last night. Vera doesn't come up against many master criminals.

IwantToRetire · 25/01/2023 16:18

Even though I left quite a gap between watching this week's episode and Happy Valley I did find it hard to take seriously.

But did notice how different it is to the early days, when so much of the detection is done over the internet. Does anyone remember is past series Vera would head off to the archive where the sole member of staff seemed to have some sort of crush on her?

Vera's role now seems to stomp around saying this doesn't make sense, then one of her lackeys says they've found something via telephone records, and she goes, ah that makes more sense.

So she doesn't do much detecting. But reacts to each new piece of information.

Also, her current sargent hardly has any lines at all, but is just allowed to react with facial expressions.

Seems very different when there was more time given to other ongoing characters.

PerilousErection · 25/01/2023 16:37

Also, her current sargent hardly has any lines at all, but is just allowed to react with facial expressions.

And also for her to lean on when he holds out her plastic crime scene booties for her to put her feet in. It's Jack, Kenny and the beardy one that do all the actual policing these days. Poor Aiden.

Paul Kaye is becoming wasted in it as well.

IwantToRetire · 25/01/2023 17:25

To be fair her previous sargent had to do the boot routine, but there was much more in the early series about how different their attitudes were, and Vera being just a tiny bit if not odd, eccentric.

duc748 · 25/01/2023 17:35

I recall more emphasis on Vera's drinking, that seems to be phased out too.

MissMarpleRocks · 25/01/2023 21:59

duc748 · 23/01/2023 11:28

I said upthread that the perp is usually more sad than bad, and once again that was the case last night. Vera doesn't come up against many master criminals.

It’s becoming a bit too obvious. If I can spot a killer then anyone can. I always end up feeling sorry for them. Especially last weeks.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 31/01/2023 14:56

I'm getting very confused with the numbering now. We had two episodes labelled as series 11 and then the next week we're into series 12. The major difference seems to be that this first one in series 12 was only 90 minutes long. Very, very far from its best, I thought, and I was sorry to see that Paul Kaye is leaving.
