First episode of Vera 2024 was shown last night (7 January)

I was sure there was a thread about this but cant find it.

So can someone give me the link, or if you want to comment on the start of this new series please use this.

I am wondering what others thought of it.

That's that series finished, apparently! And no more until 2025. Pah. Apparently ITVX has the whole lot available at the moment.

Nice to see Vera and Joe back on good terms. I knew they would get there.

I thought the plot was quite interesting, but felt the sudden appearance of the sister a bit of a stretch. Or rather how had they arranged all of it?

But on the other hand can imagine that in real life you might start uncovering information and are sure you are heading in the right direction, and then some totally unexpected bit of information is uncovered.

As to the reappearance of Mr Sulky (Joe) I wonder if their conversations made much sense if you hadn't seen the earlier series.

It was all a bit odd Vera giving him advice about how to function as a human being, when in the early series it was all about him coaxing her out of her rather isolated life.

I wonder who will be her new sidekick next year?

(On a trivial note, I am not that interested in men's fashion or whatever, but Joe seemed to be dressed as though from some 70s or 80s cop show. Not the aspirational clothes of as aspiring to be a senior police person!)

OMG, his clothes were shocking! OK from the waist up but those trousers were so unflattering and looked like they'd had a fight with his shoes, they were so far apart. And don't get me started on his leather coat...yikes.

IwantToRetire · 22/01/2024 21:54

And don't get me started on his leather coat...

I just kept getting distracted as it was just not in keeping.

What if it sets a fashion trend?!

those trousers were so unflattering and looked like they'd had a fight with his shoes

I just kept thinking his belt has broken and at any moment there would be a costume malfunction and he would be standing there with his trousers round his ankles.

He made Vera look smart .... well almost.

He was always very dapper in the early episodes, suit pants to match his jacket, nice coat. Not keen on his beard either, just that teeny bit tooooooo long. Did like the new episodes though, I find it very comforting and cosy despite the murders!

It's such a formula. Like I said last week, look for the most decent character in the cast, he'll be the perp. As soon as I saw the kindly old black man (even though he was hardly in it!), I said, there's the perp!

So did my daughter , as soon as she saw him she said - he’s nice so he did it.

Why did Vera said to Joe that she doesn't have any family? What happened to her half-sister?

I thought we'd somehow drifted into Life on Mars when I first saw the daft coat.

No family that she has contact with - she’s also got an aunt and cousin on her dad’s side .

Lovely David Leon then - as in looks not character! But I’m old enough to be his mother - everyone seems younger than me nowadays. 😢

I've met him. his character is lovely too

edit to say also, he never left "Vera", he was working on the production side behind the camera

OhChristmassTree · 09/01/2024 22:32

I think Joe was always a bit of a dick.

I don't think I noticed the first time I watched it but when I've watched repeats I think sometimes he was very rude to Vera.
There was one where he didn't agree with her about something, either whether it was a murder or one of the suspects, I can't really remember now, but he was really aggressive about it and basically saying she was losing it and getting too old. Although Vera can obviously be a pain as well 🤣

I think Aiden was much nicer.

In the books their relationship is explained much better, it is almost a mother/son relationship, with them both loving each other very much and regularly being totally exasperated with each other

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 23/01/2024 22:07

Nazi coat. My ex has one just like it and it makes me feel sick. What was with the tweed jacket too? Vera is nicely coordinated in her slightly shabby, sometimes flowery yet practical style. I like her kindness. I'm not a fan of kindness like the whole be kind movement, but she sees the human in people, not just the crime. She understands and is saddened by their actions rather than angered. She saves her anger for those who lie to her or mess up at their job.

IwantToRetire · 24/01/2024 00:24

Yes it really was a throw back. I thought I'd read somewhere that he went off to do arty farty theatre and I wonder if this was some sort of retro style in among that type of theatre crowd.

Now it turns out he had never left Vera.

As we've drifted in to appearances I wonder if Joe's wife will reappear with her ironed hair.

And yes it was strange when a whole series had a theme about Vera's sister and then suddenly it was like it had never happened. I'm sure they gave some sort of explanation, like she moved south or something.

But they have less and less back ground threads, even for the main characters. But in nearly every episode some tiny village or remote farm is mentioned and nine times out of ten Vera will say oh I know that.

You would think all those long suffering underlings would be allowed one episode when we found out a bit more about them.

You lucky, lucky woman. He is gorgeous. Delighted to hear it isn't just skin deep.

I used to love Vera but find some things annoying about it now. Most of the other police working for her have no personalities whatsover and are more like extras. I always look for the bit when she goes to a suspect's house/work, talks to them then as she gets to the door to leave she turns round to ask one more question. Every episode she does this. Agree that some of the geordie accents are terrible.

Was talking about the "one more question" thing last night, Columbo does that too Grin

That’s what I like about Vera that it is about the crime and not delving into all and sundries love lives and problems - I’d watch soaps if I wanted to see that .

Is that it?

Just 3 this series?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/01/2024 19:15

Yes. I was very disappointed. More next year, though.

MaryGreenhill · 29/01/2024 19:17

Yes. https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/vera-season-14-release-date/

Yes! There will be another season of Vera. ITV confirmed the news on Sunday 21st January 2024, adding there will be 2 episodes in this forthcoming run. According to David Leon, who plays Joe Ashworth in the series, he'd be up for more episodes should the call come. Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com, Leon said: "I'd certainly be very open to [returning]. "We haven't had any conversations about that as things stand, but it's something I'm very proud of and I'd certainly be open-minded to that." He also hinted that Vera's time in the force could be coming to an end. When is Vera season 14's release date? All we know so far is that Vera season 14 start filming "in the spring", so we're a little way off seeing those new films just yet. ITV confirmed the news on Sunday 21st January 2024, adding that there will be 2 feature length episodes in the run. If we made an educated guess, we'd say fans could maybe expect the new episodes towards the end of 2024/beginning of 2025.

If Vera retires, will we then have a series called Joe?
