Thanks for the recommendation
Was one with Richard Armitage and Jill halfpenny and she pretended to be pregnant with a ' fat suit' ?
That was similar to this

Re the stranger - I'm not sure it was Jill Halfpenny but yes that story line rings a bell, Jennifer Saunders was a coffee shop owner.

I do remember a woman pretending to be pregnant in one of these types of dramas , but I don't think we found out why she did this in the end.

TattiePants · 06/01/2024 22:21

I've just started this tonight and only watching it as I got married at Arley Hall so we're place spotting. The acting is so bad.

the80sweregreat · 06/01/2024 22:24

Arley hall looks lovely
I've never heard of it before

It's definitely worth a visit, especially in the summer when the gardens are beautiful. It gets used lots for TV series, a few Corrie weddings have been held there and it was Tommy Shelby's house in Peaky Blinders.

MarleyandMarleyWoooo · 06/01/2024 22:32

I’m a few episodes in now and regretting starting it. It’s just so shit. MK is a crappy actress imo and her character is, in many ways, just unbelievable.. as is much of the storyline really. I used to rather like Richard Armitage but honestly after this and that ridiculous Obsession (I didn’t finish that one!), I’ve gone right off him.
Highlights include (and ARE limited to!) spotting Tommy Shelby’s house 😂 and realising Alexander is Joe Armstrong who was in a crappy TV adaption of Robin Hood years ago that my sisters and I were obsessed with.

the80sweregreat · 06/01/2024 22:32

I've never visited Cheshire , but it sounds nice.

the80sweregreat · 06/01/2024 22:35

I only watched two of ' Obsession'
Channel five make a few dramas like this , the best one was was Sheridan smith , set in Eastern Europe but pretending to be England and Pauline ( one of the characters ( hiding behind a curtain! Made such a funny thread
Wasn't a HC drama though
The houses are always huge and lots of glass

localnotail · 06/01/2024 22:51

I just binged watched it over a couple of days! Cheesy but cool - though I had to FF through some of it. I know there was a lot of plot holes, but I was willing to ignore all of them! However, what was hard to ignore - full face of thick theatre make up on Maya - no matter what! Reminded me of Brazilian soap operas )) Actually, a lot of the plot reminded me of Brazilian soap opera.

Really liked the guy playing DS Kierce - great actor, surprised I've never seen him anywhere else.

Just finished it and I'm not sure if I like it! There were several times I was shouting at the telly: why is everyone so stupid!?! Also, some bits were just not believable: Maya going all the way to the headmaster's office in a posh boarding school without being stopped?? Please!

I haven't read the book, but it does feel like it should be set in America for some reason?

I did love Maya's house and clothes thoughGrin

Well Harlan Coben is American and tho I haven't read this one, most of his books are set in America

Copperoliverbear · 06/01/2024 23:15

I've watched a few of his series now, they're all great, he's a fantastic writer

MadCatLady27 · 06/01/2024 23:28

Just binged it over the last 2 days, didn't want to look at my phone and start browsing once, the end of each episode made me want to watch the next. Really really good.

I'm usually pretty good at sussing what's gone on/who's bad but here it could have been anyone it was only in the last 3 or so episodes I started to think "oh that could be because of that" or more strongly suspect people - I think the not being able to guess added to the wanting to keep watching

I've enjoyed some of the other Netflix shows based on his books

As a minor aside, why are his characters always minted?!

Onetoffeetin · 07/01/2024 01:16

Oh gosh. Just finished this. Dreadful plot and awful acting! There's a few hours of my life lost...

Quirkyme · 07/01/2024 03:20

Just finished it! Thought it was great!

susiedaisy1912 · 07/01/2024 08:49

Every time Joanna Lumley's character got angry or threatening all I could see was Patsy out of Ab Fab 😁

the80sweregreat · 07/01/2024 09:45

Joanna lumley is always the same character in most dramas , the casters want a posh lady who looks at home in a large fancy house and she fits the bill!

Edited

3 episodes down and I'm not sure if I'll continue. If there were just a few more I'd crack on. However, 8 episodes is quite a big 'investment' of time. I normally see series like this as silly but enjoyable escapism but this one just isn't working for the reasons you mention.

To reiterate what someone said above, I'm not sure why the Netflix adaptations are set in Europe when the books are very American. I remember one of the first ones, maybe 4 years ago, where the British characters were living in gated communities with swimming pools. Not impossible, but pretty unusual in Britain. The school was very American too, so it just seemed odd.

StartupRepair · 07/01/2024 10:59

I was stunned by the scale of everything. Not just the huge houses, but the doctors offices, police station, cafes etc were all incredibly spacious.

DogsAreBetterThanHusbands · 07/01/2024 12:10

I loved Claire and Eddie's house. I tried to find where it used to be and all the articles just say Bramhall. I tried looking on google streetview at a few roads, but couldn't find it.

The show itself, is okay. Lots of things are not realistic but it's still entertaining.

I don't understand the nanny cam thing though. How did the Burketts know that Maya's sister was going to give Maya a nanny cam? And how did they know to fake an image of Joe on it, on the first day it was used??

SheFliesLikeABirdInTheSky · 07/01/2024 12:35

This is SO good. Well written, well acted, well produced, nice locations. Smile

Michelle Keegan IS a good actress, and she is so stunning. Lovely looking. Not often you get get the full package these days,

I have watched 3 episodes now. Will start the 4th one later. Smile

the80sweregreat · 07/01/2024 13:59

At least Netflix seem to throw money at their productions. It's very glossy and well made
Unlike most British dramas which are much rougher round the edges !

Icantbedoingwithit · 07/01/2024 14:09

I really wanted to like it but it fell flat for me. The acting was dire worst being the long lost son and the Irish guy Shane with that stupid expression all the time. Michelle Keegan flying a helicopter with make up and perfectly manicured nails in a war zone was ridiculous. It was way too long and could have been done in 6 episodes. I did love Claire snd Eddie’s house too. Too many plotholes for me, some things just didn’t add up but the twist in the end was good.

RampantIvy · 07/01/2024 14:10

The Independent article sums it up very well. I enjoyed the series BTW.

the80sweregreat · 07/01/2024 14:21

Adele akhtar ( the detective in this) is in ' back to life ' which might still be on I player.
He is so good in that , as are all the cast
MK would struggle with a role like that of the lady main character , she is much more suited to this type of drama where make up and being glossy is hugely important.
I do like her black jacket she wears in this
It has a suede look about it.
