This new one is being plugged hard. Do we really want them to make another 1950s version? It was written before WW2 but I have not seen one set then.
We have 3 recent ones set in the 50s already I think.

I'm looking forward to it. Can't remember seeing any other TV adaptations of it before.

Lunde · 19/12/2023 21:53

It's going to be like a Shetland reunion with Douglas Henshall and Mark Bonnar in the cast

Janinejones · 20/12/2023 09:10

There are 2 versions I have seen recently which were made for TV. Both have inserted 'Miss Marple' Joan Hickson, in the Julia McKenzie version is David Hague.
There is a film version with Lesley-Ann Down and Anthony Valentine.
Has there been a version set according to the book. 1936 and no Miss Marple?

I saw the film with Bill Bixby and there's a good Radio 4 dramatisation that's fairly faithful. Not sure if I'll bother with the new one.

Cotswoldbee · 20/12/2023 09:49

That was my first thought when I saw the trailer..... Another version! 🤔

Don't recall the Joan Hickson one though, absolutely positive she didn't make a version.

Janinejones · 20/12/2023 10:11

@Cotswoldbee , Thank You. You are right, I was confused with another version.

I've seen 2 previous versions
1982 film - with Bill Bixby (but over 40 years old now)
2009 tv episode - not sure whether I fully count this one as it was part of ITV's "Marple" where they muck around with the story - they threw Miss Marple into the story then added, subtracted and changed characters and suspects

TheMarzipanDildo · 20/12/2023 15:40

I’ve read/seen so many Agatha Christie’s at this point that I can never remember any plots. Can have watched every version and it’s always a surprise.

mum2jakie · 20/12/2023 21:07

I'm re-reading the book currently. Hope they are true to the story. Hate when they have the audacity to mess around with the identity of the murderer!

Sunsept · 20/12/2023 21:32

I predict it’ll be rubbish. Like all the recent adaptations. It will be too - daft. And they will have mucked around with the plot.

Sunsept · 20/12/2023 21:33

It absolutely won’t be true to the plot.

TheMarzipanDildo · 20/12/2023 22:47

I liked the And Then There Were None the BBC did a while back because Aidan Turner was in it

That was really good even got DD to watch because of Aidan Turner

... hope it's not like The Pale Horse adaptation where the ending was totally baffling

Placemarking for Wednesday.

IwantToRetire · 27/12/2023 17:46

I didn't realise it was a new production.

I just thought it would be a repeat to plug the gaps in the schedule between Christmas and New Year.

The 2 versions I've seen had the same skeleton of a story but otherwise were different.

In fact in the actual book, Miss Marple isn't in it, but one series had her turning up as a total stranger based on a conversation on a train.

I wonder why they also choose a 50s setting.

Its as though they base their tv series on other tv series.

But will record in case there is nothing else.

menopausalmare · 27/12/2023 17:51

There was an 80s Murder is Easy starring Helen Hayes. It was ok but has a Gold Blend advert feel. I'm not a fan of the newer adaptations of Agatha Christie but 'And then there were none' had a great sinister feel.

Have a look at the article I linked to upthread - it covers that.

IwantToRetire · 27/12/2023 18:00

Why is the lead character in this black? He wasn’t in the book.

Because as said up thread this is yet another tv adaptation that takes the storyline of the book and then tries to add in something to make it different.

Same as the one I saw that had Miss Marple in it, when she wasn't part of the book.

Well Miss Marple wasn't Scottish but I don't think anyone complained about Geraldine McEwan playing the role.

You know full well that is a spurious comparison.

There’s a Times article on it here, which includes the suggestion that they’re allowed to mess about with this one because it’s simply not one of Christie’s best!

Bumping this which explains why the main character is black in this version.
