Apple TV+ 3 months free (VM offer) - Anything worth watching? Thanks

Just wondered what anyone who has Apple TV+ thinks are worthwhile programmes.

I like detective / crime dramas. More Spiral / the Wire than Midsummer Murders!

Historical, unless they are sloppy romances, and those based on actual history.

SciFi but so long as it is actual science fiction, not what now is listed as SF but is really horror, monster.

Dont mind sub titles.

Many thanks for any thoughts!

(I'm asking because I had Disney+ free for 3 months and I think I spent more time working my way through the listings than watching any series! And VM "suggestions" are so off base in terms of my usual viewing that if this is an example of AI we are all doomed!!)

Hijack and The last thing he told me were both good.

gerispringer · 08/11/2023 04:13

The film Coda is on Apple. Really enjoyed that. At the moment we are watching Lessons in Chemistry

AIstolemylunch · 08/11/2023 20:27

Can i also vote for Slow Horses? absolutley brilliant!

Tezza1 · 08/11/2023 20:31

Isn't Loot with the wonderful Maya Rudolph on Apple? Loved it.

Snowdropanddiddums · 08/11/2023 20:35

Another vote for Ted Lasso. Best series I’ve watched in a long time.

RaininginDarling · 08/11/2023 20:42

Severance is incredible. The Morning Show
Trying
Ted Lasso
Servant
Losing Alice
After Party
Slow Horses

kikisparks · 08/11/2023 20:45

Severance is amazing.

Things I like that were more drama/ comedy/ mystery based were the After Party and Schmigadoon.

henrysugar12 · 08/11/2023 20:46

Bad sisters!

kikisparks · 08/11/2023 20:47

Oh and Defending Jacob was good. The Banker was a good movie.

Tezza1 · 08/11/2023 23:13

And Schmicago was great. Because they produce all their own content, they don't yet have huge quantities of programmes available but what they do have is excellent and often unusual and extremely interesting - just that little bit different.

HookahSmokingCaterpillar · 09/11/2023 04:13

Thank you for posting this, I've also just signed up for free for 3 months because of your post so will be working my way through all these too 😃

1975wasthebest · 09/11/2023 07:59

As they are apparently about to raise their prices quite considerably this makes it quite expensive for what you get.

They already have, to £8.99 a month. I’ve read that next year they’re going to move to a tiered model, so expect another price hike.

Mythic Quest is a good comedy if you're at all geeky-minded (it centres around a MMORPG)

Coda and Tetris - both really good films

Notable mention for, since it's not been said previously, the Snoopy remakes. They have done such a good job on it - it's "proper" Snoopy and not the usual soulless CGI 3D murdering of beloved childhood cartoons.

I don't watch much TV in general - hence I've not got a massive list, but I've found Apple has less in terms of sheer amount of content, but it's better-made than Netflix for example which has a massive back catalogue which contains a huge proportion of absolute shite.

Noneedtobemean · 09/11/2023 10:21

I enjoyed Still Up and Lessons In Chemistry.

IwantToRetire · 09/11/2023 18:42

Thanks every body. Especially pleased to have this list as I have found what I thought was 3 months free with Disney+ was only 1 month so need to unsubscribe ASAP.

But not until I've finished Grid which is really interesting, but as usual getting lost in plot. (Korean sci fi tech detective drama ... )

Also relieved to find that the sign up seems to be easy.

Did the earlier poster with just VM broadband find they could also sign up?

Here is the updated list of recommendations. But its not that accurate as for some reason mumsnet no longer seems to accurately take you back to where you last were on a thread.

Bad Sisters 4
Beanie Bubble 1
Black Bird 1
Coda 3
Defending Jacob 1

The Big Door Prize with Chris O'Dowd is one we've just discovered. Comedy/drama/sci fi quite unusual and very enjoyable.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 09/11/2023 19:42

Ted Lasso is one of the best lighthearted things I've watched in a long time. Genuinely feel like my life is a little brighter for having seen it. It's a shame its hidden away on a streaming service. On a mainstream channel in a different era it would have been one that would have probably become a national classic/favourite.

Hannah Waddingham is just brilliant, in fact all the cast are fabulous. I've started imitating 'Roy Kent's' growls when I'm displeased at work Grin.

I'm really enjoying Lessons in Chemistry, it's a while since I've actively been excited for the next episode to drop each week.

The Morning Show is, OK a bit predictable perhaps with a few surprises along the way.

Now I've finished Ted Lasso I'm going to start Bad Sisters.

IwantToRetire · 19/12/2023 21:03

Typical of me.

I've only just signed up via the Priority code and its telling me I've only got a week free.

Really p--d off.

Should have done it sooner.

Ye I watched Ted lasso when I was ill, very easy watching, cheesy as hell mind.

Puppupandaway · 19/12/2023 21:33

We only set it up last week and we still got 3 months free. Think it said we had til Aug to activate it. Can you double check??

2023usernameNew · 19/12/2023 21:38

I second the poster above re Lessons in Chemistry

Torganer · 19/12/2023 21:41

Ted Lasso!!! Can’t recommend it enough and I was late to the game! Also Lessons in Chemistry, but I’d recommend reading the book first.

Torganer · 19/12/2023 21:41

Also Trying is good too

Ted Lasso and Slow Horses. Worth it just for those 💙

Cismyfatarse · 19/12/2023 21:47

Bad Sisters.

So funny.
