Anyone else looking forward to the new season starting on Wednesday? It will seem a bit strange without Perez but looks to be a good cast and storyline so far as we know.

I'm liking it BUT I'm not good with whole episodes of peril/about to be peril so may go off it!

RandomersAssociation · 10/11/2023 08:07

True, @SoupDragon. I’m obviously not saying we have to be shown The Baby because Tosh is a woman - but the inter-relatedness of Perez’s domestic / personal life with his working life was one of the great attractions and emotional drivers of the show, previously.

And of course he had such a unique family situation, a widow sharing his daughter with her (so very foxy!) bio-dad. There was built in tension every single time either one of them appeared on screen. If they’re not able to replicate that sort of complex hinterland for Tosh, the show will be the poorer for it.

I’d definitely say the episodes dealing with Tosh’s rape were outstanding, in script and performance. Although I wouldn’t want main characters going through that much trauma every week, that is, imo, the level of storytelling they should be aiming for. I’d be sorry if it became cosily superficial, with no significant emotional or reputational jeopardy for the police. Which is why I’m determined that Ruth’s brother must be awfully involved!

MainlyOnThePlain · 10/11/2023 08:15

There was also a nice tension between Tosh and Perez - a blend of respect, fatherly concern about the rape they'd never speak of, professional encouragement, trust, her occasional exasperation with him, flashes of humour, an unspoken understanding that Sandy was a bit of an idiot but would sometimes do a decent job and knew everyone on the islands...

I wonder if Donny & The Baby will reappear in a plot line related to Ruth's lack of family life, compared with Tosh's caring responsibilities, and the career impact thereof. (I kind of hope not, as it's a bit Route 1.)

SoupDragon · 10/11/2023 08:27

I agree. There's been none of that sort of thing at all has there? Maybe they're waiting for the new group to "bed down" before introducing all that stuff back in. The whole thing about Tosh, the baby and Donny being friends with the woman was woven into the main story last time.

Yes brother and new wife too good to be true.
Who did do poor Ellen in ??
One of the dodgy Bains clan?

RandomersAssociation · 10/11/2023 08:38

Yes - the strengths and weaknesses of the police characters, the need to keep their own family members safe, the way the crimes had urgent impacts on the community - there was a lot going on in the Perez era!

(Remember the young PC briefed with protecting Perez’s daughter in the Perez house? Grin)

I'm disappointed I haven't spotted a cake fridge yet.

I'm guessing the cigarette won't belong to the wife although that's what Ruth/we are being led to think?

Or it is the wife's but she had given it to someone else to dispose of for her?
Peter?

duc748 · 10/11/2023 12:04

That whole scene was daft, though. I don't know which was the most ridiculous: the idea of giving someone a dog-end to 'dispose of', wtf? Has anyone in the history of man ever done that? Or the idea that a wife can pop out for a smoke, and 'her husband think's she's given up'. How old is she? 13?

I know a 50 something woman that still does that (although she’s deluded - her DH obviously knows).

Maybe the wife bummed a cigarette off the dodgy beardy bloke who clyped on Ruth’s ex about his van?

Could be, plausible! She did just produce one from a pocket or something, not a packet.

That young PC is still in Shetland, he's the one who chased the baddie to the boat. PC Grant I think he's called

Jitterybugs · 10/11/2023 16:07

Anybody else excited to see Grannie Island from the Katie Morag series? 😆

She didn’t take any nonsense from the 2 fugitives. Katie Morag would be proud of her.

MyCircumference · 10/11/2023 20:25

yuck indeed to get rid of someone's fag butt and how could her husband not know

Ah, that’s who she was! I was driving myself mad trying to place her.

Am missing Perez’s house as much as Perez. I liked his dour but tasteful kitchen cupboards, him having a dram and staring out to sea, gloomily, over his boat, Cassie rolling her eyes, and Duncan showing up having done something phenomenally stupid again. While looking like an ad for shampoo that keeps grey hair zingy.

I feel either Ruth or Tosh needs an interesting house we get to see inside. A dour but tasteful converted kirk or an austere croft with a view.

Maybe Ruth can rent Perez’s house while he travels the world with Not Very Interesting Last Season Nurse Love Interest.

Clearly he and his knitwear should have waltzed off into the subset with either ravishing Asha Israni from season 3 or Nina Sosanya’s pathologist/SOCO type (was she called Willow?) from season 2, who had scorching chemistry with him.

wellAverage · 10/11/2023 20:43

Are the previous series available to watch?

duc748 · 10/11/2023 20:45

Looks like they're all on i-player.

Enjoying this new series.
Love Tosh and Ashley Jensen character.
Very strange to hear Mrs Hughes from Downton effing and jeffing 🤣

All this, a million times.

As for Tosh’s personal life - I recall around the time of the awful attack there was a wild looking artist (I think?) who somehow became peripherally involved in a case. And at some point when Tosh needed comforting she just went and sat in his house, silently. He looked terrified but also perfect. And I thought they’d get married. I think the thread thought they’d get married. Then nothing. Then daft Donny and The Baby. What happened to the artist?

duc748 · 11/11/2023 01:35

To echo pp, I'd just say that this series, much as I liked Tosh and Ruth, has lacked (thus far) the interiors, both metaphorically and literally, that added to the appeal of Shetland.

Violetparis · 11/11/2023 08:17

I like Tosh and thought the actress was excellent in the series where she was attacked. Her 'puzzled' or 'shocked' acting face where she raises one side of her mouth makes me cringe it's so bad.

Awrite · 11/11/2023 14:27

I've been rewatching from the start. In series 5 Jimmy says to the posh bad guy in Glasgow 'if anyone comes near ma daughter again, I'll rip the eyes right out your fucking head'.

What a line, what a delivery, what a man.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 11/11/2023 18:14

Im not loving it I have to say. I do miss Perez.
