Anyone else looking forward to the new season starting on Wednesday? It will seem a bit strange without Perez but looks to be a good cast and storyline so far as we know.

@RandomersAssociation I’m at home with a bad back & have just poured a glass of wine. I’m in if you are!

RandomersAssociation · 20/11/2024 15:55

Hah! Ignore me - was getting confused with S8. We’re only on Ep 3 this season and it won’t be available to stream until after broadcast this evening. Apols!

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 20/11/2024 16:01

@RandomersAssociation, @TwoDrifters2,

Hope you both feel better soon. I'm sending you each a virtual brownie from the marvellous Cake Fridge...

(medicinal, as may or may not contain an extra...um...ingredient! 😉 )

RandomersAssociation · 20/11/2024 16:15

Thanks! I need all the, erm, extra ingredients going. Grin

Yeah, Duncan would turn the average person into a psychopath

Now its my turn to say dont be so mean.

He was a wonderful house husband and tried desperately hard to get Perez to stop being such a (half cooked potato) portent of gloom.

I think Duncan and Sandy are quite similar. Both a bit over keen and over estimating their own skills.

And gullible. So unintentionally helping the wrong 'uns with bad intentions.

Agreed, Duncan cheered Jimmy up on a number of occasions. He also (and this is me just vaguely throwing my mind back) was a serial philanderer, screwing up his marriage to Fran and to Mary because he couldn’t keep his trousers zipped, abandoned Cassie as a baby, had a child as a result of an extramarital affair with a murderer, had intermittent alcohol issues and was involved in various dodgy, semi-criminal dealings, seems to bring financial ruin to anything he touches, got himself convicted of being involved in the death of a convicted murderer (his former affair partner and the mother of his adult son), and almost lost Jimmy his job on the same charge.

I think having Duncan as your co-dad and housemate would be quite trying, especially if you were a cop.

RandomersAssociation · 20/11/2024 16:28

got himself convicted of being involved in the death of a convicted murderer

D’you know - I’m still not over that. It’s rare for a fictional storyline to deliver such a punch to the guts, but that … It was so, so cruel, and played on everything lovely, reckless, naive Duncan is.

duc748 · 20/11/2024 16:31

I remember him, stood by the pillar-box!

"Don't do it, Duncan!"

Yes, it was really good plotting. I don't know the actress who played Donna Killick, but she was excellent, and the writing of that entire plotline after she comes back to Shetland was good. Duncan is such a gom, though. Even allowing for his guilt about being the partner in the affair that led her to murder someone for fear they would tell her abusive husband AND that produced a child by Duncan, a baby could have seen what was going on.

I think I did think Donna Killick was going to try to take out Meg, somehow, as well, to really do a number on Perez, but Meg has 'Don't Mess With Me' written all over her. In fairness, I suspect that would be completely necessary in a palliative care nurse.

@IwantToRetire, I think Harry the man eating cake (from the cake fridge?) in his office is Harry, the current Procurator Fiscal. I miss Rhona, though. She wore nice silk shirts and was bolshie with Perez.

I missed the very beginning of last night’s episode (or maybe I didn’t miss much? I switched on when Ruth was talking to Crazy Gun Man about taking the job, and having a brother on Shetland and liking the team), so I assumed she’d been in there for hours, if not days, hence Tosh being outside with a lot of armed cops. But how did Tosh even know Ruth was there, if Ruth just dropped by off her own bat to do what she thought was a welfare check?

I still miss Rhona too. Are they trying to give the new guy a personality by having him eat doughnuts/cake?
I've only watched the first ep – does anyone know if Cora is back? She's my other favourite.

TwoDrifters2 · 20/11/2024 16:55

Ah never mind @RandomersAssociation I can wait for tonight. Thanks for the sugar high @ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap

RandomersAssociation · 20/11/2024 17:25

In the meantime - Apple TV has just alerted me to a new episode of You Would Do It Too. So life is sweet …

I also liked that they went back to a previous storyline with Donna Killick.

Poor Fergus!

RandomersAssociation · 20/11/2024 22:10

Gosh, tonight was tough viewing.

I predict that that little boy will be a Hollywood star one day.

And I have two theories about Annie’s ‘handler’ - but they’re inimical to each other.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 20/11/2024 23:08

I agree. Young Noah is heading for a glittering acting career if that's his chosen path. He's a better actor than the rest in the show. His emotions appear genuine without any rubber-facing.
Tosh's fringe annoyed me tonight. It needs a trim and I hate a fringe that's too low. I get irritated as though it was my own and in my eyes.
Loved Ruth's outfit today.
Spy guy is up to no good. If I were Ruth I'd have checked the vinyl collection for bugs. He was looking sus.
What the heck have they done to poor Angus? Injected him with some kind of toxin? Or plugged so many lipids into his blood stream that his blood vessels are clogged up and combined with the probable atherosclerosis from smoking it's not looking good.
I have no idea what Annie was really up to and how the dodgy rich Europeans fit in.

duc748 · 20/11/2024 23:26

So Annie and Bergan were the good guys, investigating what was going on at the lab? Better make that call to your buddy, Ruth, and check out Ewan.

RandomersAssociation · 20/11/2024 23:37

I’m guessing … the only reason Euan didn’t do away with Noah as well is that he’s his son?

He didn’t fly up to Shetland to help and protect her, he raced up to shut her up …

RandomersAssociation · 20/11/2024 23:37

<Prepares to be embarrassingly wrong>

duc748 · 20/11/2024 23:44

I thought it was implied that he might be Noah's father, but I can't remember the time-line. Was he around when Annie died?

She phoned him (was it the night she died?) but obviously we don’t know where he was when he received the call.

He's amazing isn't he?! His facial expressions are superb and the way he delivers his lines makes it hard to remember that he is not really traumatised (at least I hope not!)

SoupDragon · 21/11/2024 12:47

Spy Man is absolutely dodgy and I think he is Noah's father too. He's far too interested in him.

Kingdomoffife · 21/11/2024 13:59

Spy man might be interested in Noah because N is a potential witness. So often young actors in tv dramas just can't act, but the casting agent must have been thrilled to find the boy playing Noah.

SoupDragon · 21/11/2024 12:47

Yes. Or he knows who is, and it isn't Ian Betts? And like a pp, I hope Ruth checked Cal's record collection for bugs after Spy Guy left, but from the fact that she told him never to come to her house again, I'd imagine she was aware of the possibility. Maybe Billy will turn out to be an anti-spyware genius or something, and will finally be allowed out of the station? (Have we ever actually seen Billy outdoors, ever? Are we sure he doesn't just kip down in a cell at night? Should we all show up at a Shetland location for the next series with large FREE BILLY signs?)

On Noah (agree that child is a good actor!), I did wonder whether having Ruth phone up the people he's staying with to ask after him was supposed to 'normalise' Spy Man's interest in him? Although I also liked the subtlety with which the scene where Tosh manages to get key information out of Noah conveyed Ruth watching, visibly cringing about having got it so wrong with him when she's tried to talk to him last time, and then using her newfound child-talking skills to elicit the key clue about the 'dinosaur' Noah saw at the marine research institute.

I had a sick day recently and rewatched the last season, and hadn't previously noticed that, for all of Ruth's crustiness and often abrasive manner, she's often more visibly moved by elements of the investigation than the apparently gentler Tosh is -- she's noticeably moved to the point of holding back tears by the confessions of both Bobby Bain and Kieran in the final episode.

(On a more superficial note, Ruth has what looks like some excellent midcentury furniture in her house -- I bet it will be gorgeous when she unpacks fully. And why are Tosh's nice jumpers frequently ruined by having a not so nice shirt underneath? I did wonder if the actor was concealing a pregnancy...?)

SoupDragon · 21/11/2024 14:25

I googled the Noah actor. He is about 10/11 now and, during lockdown (aged 7), made videos with his older brother parodying Nicola Sturgeon and Boris Johnson.
