Anyone else looking forward to the new season starting on Wednesday? It will seem a bit strange without Perez but looks to be a good cast and storyline so far as we know.

Agree @daffodilandtulip it misses the little bits of Duncan and Jimmy, and Cassie (I remember one comment in a previous series about her being the only girl with a Dad's WhatsApp group) and Jimmy's guilt about Fran and his father.

Sandy should be used more, he is Shetland born and bred. His family still live on Shetland. Give him a story and not just one where he's shown as an incompetent male (because he isn't) but I doubt that will happen as its the BBC.

Scenery is amazing though which is partly why I'm still watching.

Why would Sandy not get a storyline because it’s the BBC?

I agree he’s underused, but while they’re still bedding in a new central character and the people associated with her, and recentring Tosh as the authority figure, I imagine they’re not going to introduce a Sandy storyline. His ‘job’ last season was to babysit Ruth while she was still a visitor because she could then make him do stuff Tosh would never have allowed her to do solo, but now he’s gone back to being ‘gruntwork’ (but allowed to leave the station, unlike Billy).

Talking of rude, Tosh has definitely started to sound more like Perez this season when she barks orders!

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 17/11/2024 19:42

I'm struck by the realisation that Sandy has a pictorial double, and that is Tintin...! 😁

museumum · 17/11/2024 21:50

I like Ruth being prickly. The male DI with poor people skills is sooo overused. Vera would be the only big female version. Ruth could be Vera with better wardrobe.
I thought the “well it felt like a fight” dialogue in the car was great.
and I googled whether Shetland has AFO and I think they do.

IwantToRetire · 18/11/2024 00:04

Did you watch Ellis? Another woman detective will little time for the niceties. Others said it was like Vera, but the writing is much sharper, more contemporary. https://www.channel5.com/show/ellis

Sorry for thread derail. But more interesting than me saying again thanks goodness that half cooked potato Perez has gone! Grin

A lifelong Shetland fan here but given up during this first episode. Very tedious I thought and missing something.

I agree about him looking like a half-cooked potato, but I also always found him weirdly compelling. Having said that, I suspect a lot of it was Perez's nice wardrobe. The same face would, if matched with grubby tracksuit bottoms, homemade tattoos and a straggly mullet, create a very different effect. He's certainly looked absolutely godawful in other roles, and his look even on Shetland got a lot more chic over time. He's much scruffier in earlier series.

Also, frankly, a much better actor than Tosh.

RandomersAssociation · 18/11/2024 13:26

To be honest I never really noticed his clothes until MN told me to.

It’s just that - regardless of objective physical attributes or lack of, Perez as a character exuded such an impression of deep understanding and empathy towards every individual human that you can’t help feeling he would be nice to be close to.

LadyEloise1 · 18/11/2024 13:39

Stop being mean about Perez !!!Angry

Dougie Henshall is lovely.
A half baked potato indeed. Hmmm !

Yes, but he was also a grumpy bollocks, too. Sometimes it felt as if his funds of empathy ran out outside the station, and he would stomp around inside there shouting 'Get on wi' it!' at his subordinates, as though he'd come across them having a three-hour watercooler conversation about Love Island, rather than doing the joyless gruntwork of solving crimes.😀

He's a really attractive half-baked potato for me.

Can't disagree about him being a better actor than the actor who plays Tosh, fond though I am of Tosh as a character.

I think I'm struggling slightly with her since she grew that heavy fringe, because so much of her facial acting involves raising her eyebrows and wrinkling her forehead. Which you now can't see because of her fringe.

In the book, he's a rather brooding man. But I think the lovely Douglas Henshall played him so well. You almost feel the pain he went through. He had a lot to deal with, what with Fran dying(they changed how she died for the tv series and aged Cassie), his Mum dying and his Dad getting dementia. Add in Duncan and it's enough to make anyone a bit grumpy.

Yeah, Duncan would turn the average person into a psychopath.

Iwantacampervan · 18/11/2024 15:30

My big question is where is the cake fridge? I don't think it appeared (starred) in the last series either - maybe it was asking too large a fee.

Has it appeared that often? My only memory of it is when Perez's Dad had dementia and was wandering, and Meg came across him at the cake fridge.

I don't think so but it was the highlight of that episode (series) and gave me another good reason to want to visit the islands.

Lest we forget...

Shetland season 8
KitchenAngst · 18/11/2024 17:00

I was listening to Richard Osman and Marina Hyde talking about the cast of Inside Out 2, and how Amy Poehler was offered a huge payrise to return as Joy after the massive success of Inside Out, while Mindy Kaling was offered a derisory sum to return as Disgust, turned it down and was replaced.

Maybe the Cake Fridge has an over-ambitious agent?

I love that it says CAKE FRIDGE on the front. In case we thought a fridge full of cake was actually something entirely different. 😀

IwantToRetire · 18/11/2024 17:40

Now its my turn to say dont be so mean.

He was a wonderful house husband and tried desperately hard to get Perez to stop being such a (half cooked potato) portent of gloom.

I think Duncan and Sandy are quite similar. Both a bit over keen and over estimating their own skills.

And gullible. So unintentionally helping the wrong 'uns with bad intentions.

BiliousOhGod · 13/11/2024 21:59

So, for all the members of the armed response unit last week, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Billy was the only officer on the Islands this week....

Yes, but Billy isn't allowed to leave the station! Hence why they have all the others to draft in 😂

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 18/11/2024 21:03

I'd love a cake fridge in my town, although my waistline would be even bigger 😂

The stern question you have ask yourself, as do we all, is, how long would such an idea last in your town? 😛

So no one’s watched Ep 4 yet?

I’m at home with a bad cold and contemplating starting it soon …
