Anyone else looking forward to the new season starting on Wednesday? It will seem a bit strange without Perez but looks to be a good cast and storyline so far as we know.

both things ensure you die immediately

The moment Cal got in the van to drive away I thought he's not going to make it.

And did wonder whether farm villian, far from fixing the non starting van, did something dodgy to the steering wheel or something.

Thougn no doubt the more obvious negative impact of both alcohol and drugs may will have played a part.

The eejit wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, was pissed and high and was on his phone.

So it was either a hideous car crash and death or he was looking at a lot of points on his licence (I bet he had some dodgy tyres too).

And why do none of Tosh and Ruth’s interviewees ever have at least a duty solicitor in with them?

ButtonSister · 29/11/2023 22:45

I know it's fiction but they way they get lab reports so quickly (eg the blanket in the doc's car) or access to bank details (going through the Bains bank statement on a mobile phone) stretches credulity too far.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 29/11/2023 22:47

@ArcaneWireless I like Ruth too. She's headstrong and follows her gut instead of the rules. I like that. Tosh's facial expressions are starting to annoy me.

It seemed awful quick to get Ruth’s DNA results back?

Also interested in how Ruth had so many outfits and yet a tiny suitcase.

WGACA · 29/11/2023 22:55

I’m enjoying it but only just realised Kieran and Danny aren’t the same person 😳 I didn’t pick up on Ruth and Ellen potentially being sisters etc at the mention of the dad’s alleged affair either 😳 Cal had to die because he knows too much..?

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 29/11/2023 22:56

Let's not forget that most of what is admitted to is outside of an interview room and would likely be inadmissible in court. But then the real world is scary and I like a bit of incredulous tv story writing especially on a winter's night like this. Even if it is still technically autumn, the minus 3 and heavy frost along with my cold nose and feet despite being in bed, says it's winter.

Dr Azir needs striking off. For the illicit drugs he's doping up his vulnerable wife with, and the terrible hair and acting.

Jitterybugs · 29/11/2023 23:12

Disappointing to see them doing the same as Coronation St and discussing confidential details of an ongoing police investigation in a cafe within ear shot of staff and other diners

ArcaneWireless · 29/11/2023 23:16

@JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots

I am well known for utilising a Tosh face.

Usually when someone is trying to tell me how to do my job and I know fine they haven’t a clue.

I think she’ll be grand working with Ruth. I’m fed up of the ‘temporary’ shenanigans.

I too like to suspend belief. Just a wee bit.

Who is Danny??

backtowinter · 30/11/2023 10:15

I don't know or who Danny is either

I live Ashley Jensen in this bit she really does show the others up in terms of acting

I'd never noticed until this series quite how "am dram" Tosh and Sandy were

Last night's
acting was particularly excruciating.

TLDRfuckers · 30/11/2023 10:29

To all the people finding the white characters too similar looking, would you say that about them if they weren’t white too?

martinisforeveryone · 30/11/2023 10:42

Probably if they had similar features like they’re related, same hairstyles and-or facial hair and dressed in a similar style too.

I’m finding with a few series lately there are a lot of characters, often they introduce new ones as we go, and there’s little reference to their names or relationships, so it’s unclear where they sit in the drama. Add to that similar looks and styling, it can be hard to place them.

I didn’t watch last night, have given up on it. I’ll just follow the thread for a resolution.

SabrinaThwaite · 30/11/2023 12:16

Last night’s episode started to knit together a lot of the various strands of the story.

Ilovetea33 · 30/11/2023 12:47

I feel sorry for the fiscal. Unlike his predecessors, he seems to have no authority at all.

ButtonSister · 30/11/2023 13:23

Is Danny Heather's son? Or the partner of the pagan sheep-killer? Or the son of the woman in hospital?

ButtonSister · 30/11/2023 13:24

What is your point?

TheHillsIsLonely · 30/11/2023 15:03

I don't think there is a Danny? There's a Donnie, who is Tosh's partner.

DisingenuousBatshittery · 30/11/2023 15:22

There's a Billy and a Bobby too - I would like to extend my not-casting-identical-men to also not calling everyone similar names as well.

I reckon the old Rev Calder is not Ellen's father, that he was just trying to help Stella because Bobby Bain is Ellen's father, and that's also why he was in London.

LadyEloise1 · 30/11/2023 15:45

Is the Procurator Fiscal on Shetland the equivalent of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Ireland ? Obviously on a smaller scale.

I thought Bobby Bain and Ellen Quinn were brother and sister?

Ooooh. Interesting

There was also a nice tension between Tosh and Perez - a blend of respect, fatherly concern about the rape they'd never speak of, professional encouragement, trust, her occasional exasperation with him, flashes of humour, an unspoken understanding that Sandy was a bit of an idiot but would sometimes do a decent job and knew everyone on the islands...

I wonder if Donny & The Baby will reappear in a plot line related to Ruth's lack of family life, compared with Tosh's caring responsibilities, and the career impact thereof. (I kind of hope not, as it's a bit Route 1.)

Nailed it re the tension/relationship. I really miss it, although I am starting to enjoy Ashley J too.
Also miss Perez's gloomily tasteful kitchen and his house perched over the harbour. My DP has/had a big man-crush on him and is missing him too. And of course I'd love the beautifully fragile-featured Mark Bonnar back, but that ain't happening.
I slightly fancy Ruth's hapless ex-boyfriend Blush and have done since Guilt. He's got a lovely husky voice.

I've only seen two so far, so have skipped the latter stretch of this thread so I don't spoiler myself. Sorry some of my comments are a bit behind the curve.
I am confused by the interchangeable young men too but am hoping it will all become clear.
I don't know who the cleaning woman is – a Bain, I assume, but don't know how she fits in.
Ellen's dad is presumably just Norther Irish rather than trying to do a Shetland accent? IRL there are a lot of people not from Shetland living there, so it's not unlikely that you'd come across someone like him.

The fag end was obviously significant. I suspect the 'volunteer' of something, although I don't know what. He seemed very keen to take down the van's reg and share it with the police. And he's only been there six months, so is automatically suss.
Ellen's friend's partner is 'only' involved in the drugs thing, I think, not Ellen's death.
It got suddenly more complicated and interesting when they revealed Ellen's satanic sheep tattoo.
I adore Cora. In an alternative universe I would be a pathologist. She's my hero.
I don't like the Procurator Fiscal. I want Rhona back instead.
Loved the doughty ex-nurse with her socking great shotgun.
No idea how the guy in the (beautiful) wooden house fits in.
Love the scenery, as ever. Every time I watch Shetland I start up my fantasy of moving there, although in reality with my budget I would live in a house less like Ruth's brother's manse and more like the depressing flat Ellen's friend has. Oh well.

DisingenuousBatshittery · 30/11/2023 16:53

Yes brother and sister. Explains the DNA with Ruth, and why everyone at the farm is so miserable.

I thought Ruth was brilliant in her handling of Sandy this week, especially juxtaposed with Tosh and Billy (and indeed James) thinking he's useless. He just needed taking in hand a bit. I don't remember him being so wet.

duc748 · 30/11/2023 16:58

These days Sandy's more a plot device than a character.

Is Danny Heather's son? Or the partner of the pagan sheep-killer? Or the son of the woman in hospital?

Heather's son is Neil Bain. Stella Quinn and Bobby Bain are sister and brother, so Ellen was Bobby's niece.
I don't think Heather Bain is a sibling of Stella and Bobby, possibly a cousin?
