I don't believe in ghosts. But this is BBC2, not Channel 5 or the usual channels which run this type of crap. So I'm watching. Anyone else?

Re last night’s episode I couldn’t work out the connection between the boy, who seemed quite benign and the dog liked him, and the apparently aggressive entity causing the man telling the story to levitate in his bed. I also think that was sleep paralysis.

KimberleyClark · 21/10/2023 14:26

I’m also not entirely convinced that a house built on old mineworkings couldn’t have some plumbing quirks that might cause the toilet to flush itself occasionally. There would be air currents and stuff down there.

dayswithaY · 21/10/2023 17:49

I like the podcast but I really do treat it as light entertainment, just an interesting distraction when I drive to work. Some of the stories are clearly just exaggerated or simple coincidences.

I do feel the TV show is stretching it a bit at one hour long, feels like there were lots of little bits glued together around the main story, in episode one we had mould spores, Bold Street timeslips, a seance with a creative writing group, a local historian plus Danny in his garden in a red beanie! Loved his tiger sweatshirt though.

Alltheyearround · 21/10/2023 19:55

I wish our toilet would flush itself occasionally. Out of the 3 people in my family I seem to be the only one.

Maybe it's a disgruntled mother whose grievance about unflushing has taken on an afterlife. From the ridiculous to the sublime....

...Was listening to an episode of heart and soul (BBC radio) all about near death experiences last night. Another fascinating thing to think about.

Just catching now. Quite enjoyed watching Danny trying to get a toilet to flush itself and then where they make new Ian bang around in the kitchen. Seems to be quite a bit more filler than the podcast.

I couldn’t understand why the sister moved back into the house with her son when she’d had such terrifying experiences there

That was my first thought. Why the heck did she do that and with her young DS.

Yes this actually ruined the whole episode for me, as I instantly couldn’t find them credible witnesses. Why the hell would expose your child to that if you had been absolutely terrorised by it as a child?

Also agree with others that the podcast is a better format for Uncanny. I was doing DIY today and the the TV show on in the background - I don’t feel I missed anything by just listening to it.

Pebble21uk · 21/10/2023 22:13

With the levitating, I couldn't understand why when he touched his sister and that made him drop back onto the bed, why that didn't wake her? He said he then shook his sister awake... surely dropping from a height back on to a bed would wake the person next to you!

Luciansmum6 · 21/10/2023 23:10

@santapawsiscomingtotown there could be a reason why they are often from a particular time period- perhaps a spirit has a set limit on the time it can stay here, or maybe eventually as time passes the spirit moves on so the ones from earlier time periods normally have gone. The victorians also dabbled in spiritual stuff a lot more such as ouigi boards ect they were quite into that.

Those of you who believe it was sleep paralysis what do you think was going on with the Enfield poltergeist?

The girls faked it, I thought that was widely known?

WitchyFingers2 · 22/10/2023 08:28

bellac11 · 21/10/2023 23:56

Yeah definitely fake. Those pictures show her jumping off the bed, how anyone thinks she is levitating is beyond me! Her legs are bent because she's jumping!

IdaPolly · 22/10/2023 13:02

I initially thought the house in the second episode looked semi detached. I was thinking "For goodness sake, it's obviously the neighbour walking upstairs and doing DIY." I was wrong about that though. The Enfield girl definitely looked like she was leaping off the bed rather than levitating. Were only photos taken there not film?

IdaPolly · 22/10/2023 13:06

I agree it was horrible imagining little kids down that grid of mine tunnels in the dark.
I'm enjoying this series. I'm not particularly a woo person but enjoy the creepy stories.
I get sleep paralysis and I hate it. I feel like someone is clinging to my back with their arms round me and it feels so real compared to a dream. I get hallucinations of a burglar coming in my room and end up screaming until someone wakes me up.

I found it quite suspicious that she always was right in the middle of the photos, while apparently being flung about the room, given that the camera was in a fixed position and being operated remotely by the photographer pressing the shutter every time he heard her scream.

IdaPolly · 22/10/2023 13:09

When I was in bed last night I was imagining what it would be like to be in that grid of mine tunnels now on your own. 😱

I bet she always landed on the other bed too 😀

LunaNorth · 22/10/2023 21:34

I can’t get over the fact that the guy telling the story this week is a secondary school teacher!

He’s going to get ripped to shreds. Fancy going on telly saying that you lived in a haunted house and shared a bed with your sister. Year 9 are going to have a field day 🤦🏼‍♀️

Dahlia82 · 22/10/2023 21:44

@LunaNorth omg exactly this! I couldn’t believe it either. I couldn’t get my head around why he would agree to go on telly.
He seemed quite fragile at times and those kids are going to be brutal! I’m worried for him.

IdaPolly · 22/10/2023 22:13

His dad was described as fierce. Maybe he has a side like that as a teacher. Some teachers kids don't mess with. There are long standing teachers like that at my dcs' school who they describe as "Nice but slightly threatening." Probably need to be like that in a Comp.

LunaNorth · 23/10/2023 07:34

I was a teacher. Trust me, scary or not, he has just presented those kids with the mother-load.

He has shit the bed. Truly.

Graciebobcat · 23/10/2023 08:57

Yes, I thought that- he's a current teacher?

Hope he has a good sense of humour as that is going to be tested in the next few weeks.

Catspyjamas17 · 23/10/2023 09:05

I had a theory that houses being built on old mine workings might actually cause spookiness- back to the old infrasound again. Plus you don't know that the two witnesses saw the same boy though it sounded similar, or how much knowledge of local history they each had which may have informed their hallucination.

If the mum was regularly up late she may have had insomnia and sleep deprivation.

I was up late working the other night and saw a shadow figure moving across the kitchen- I just put it down to being very tired! And also watching and reading a lot about ghost stories. Closest I've ever come to "seeing" something. I didn't feel scared, just kind of "Oh, ok..." My dog was next to me and didn't react.

KimberleyClark · 23/10/2023 09:12

@Catspyjamas17 could it have been a floater perhaps, especially as you were very tired.

Catspyjamas17 · 23/10/2023 09:27

No, I've had floaters and this was different. I definitely believe it was a hallucination though!

LunaNorth · 23/10/2023 09:29

I’ve had lots of experiences that I could put down to the supernatural. In certain moods I probably do. In other moods, I can rationalise them away.

I can’t imagine being so committed to the idea that I’d experienced the paranormal that I’d go on telly to talk about it. I can imagine getting halfway through the filming and starting to embroider and bullshit a bit to make it seem more real.

Which is what I sensed happening on this episode, tbh.
